Three women's bodies found in the sea at Brighton

BlackTogetherAgain · 13/05/2026 10:16

This is absolutely heartbreaking.

Why didn't anyone report three women were missing?

If it's a Channel crossing, from what I understand, it's rare that women go on the boats from France, and when they do they are pushed to the back / bottom, where the risk of being crushed is high.

If it's not a crossing, what on earth has happened?

Words can't express how evil this is.

I used to look like I was sunburnt when I got out of the four degree water 🌊

Yeah the coldest I have ever been in was swimming off tynemouth beach in Newcastle a couple of years ago. The sand was actually bloody frozen and the sea was…. Bracing.

certainly woke me up though.

LittleMissClutter · 13/05/2026 13:40

Sickening and unnecessary speculation @EvangelinaMae

I like how you say about not speculating and yet do just that!

Only found them this morning, the rest is impossible for us to say.

NeptuneMoon · 13/05/2026 13:40

Why is suggesting they might come from small boats racist? I suspect they were early morning swimmers but nobody knows at this point - & whatever the circumstances, it’s absolutely tragic.

It’s a sad state of affairs when you can’t have a normal conversation or state something matter of fact without being called a racist!

WhereAreWeNow · 13/05/2026 13:42

Such a sad story. My first thought was swimmers rather than migrant crossings. Either way, it's a tragedy.

Cutchemist · 13/05/2026 13:43

I live in Brighton and regularly swim here. Everyone here thinks it’s sea swimmers. Many people swim here in the early mornings. Mostly women

Lovemycat2023 · 13/05/2026 13:43

If you listen the press conference they talked about looking at CCTV from the businesses etc in the nearby area. That suggests these poor women came from on land. The original call was also for one person in the water. Always possible one went in and the others went to help. So very sad.

They usually come first and then send for their families to join them afterwards so they are entitled to better housing, or use their status as settled in the UK to attract a wife in their home country which they then bring over for the same reason. If there was a country offering me a free life I'd also go tbh!

Anyway, whoever the bodies belong to it's terribly tragic, must be a really scary death at sea and usually totally preventable.

Do some flipping reading, other than naff social media, the Daily Mail and GBN. Educate yourself on the rules, esp the updated ones about the measures Labour brought in. Then be embarrassed for spreading lies.

Oh cmon on not the “I’m not racist trope/free speech crap.”
It’s okay for you to dehumanise people you see as inferior yet how dare anyone call you out.

Nah I’ll call it out wherever I see it.

Lovemycat2023 · 13/05/2026 13:47

It’s very unlikely that they have come from a boats crossing because (a) the location (few boats go to Sussex, most are intercepted at sea or land in Kent) (b) the time of day (c) the weather. Not everything is because of small boats. In fact most of it isn’t, despite what the media say.

StephensLass1977 · 13/05/2026 13:47

I assumed local sea swimmers who got into trouble. That's just where my mind went, though. It could be people escaping though.

This is an odd thread, l thought when l heard the news they were early morning swimmers.
I live on the coast and loads of groups swim in the morning, never would have thought of small boat people...even if it was its still tragic.

This

How terribly tragic, poor women.

@BlackTogetherAgain small boats do not arrive in Brighton.
I think it's more likely to be a midnight or early morning swim that went badly wrong.

So the original poster's opening message suggests migrant crossing. Their second post recognises this is unlikely to be the case due to location but goes on to specify the number of migrants crossing per annum.

To me this sounds more like someone who wants to kick up a fuss about small boats crossing than true concern about what has tragically happened to these poor women.

I am glad people call it out when they see people shit stirring on Mumsnet or in real life, especially using faux concern to push forward a political agenda.

CatkinToadflax · 13/05/2026 13:55

It’s pretty clear which posters on this thread don’t live on the coast.

Poor ladies and their poor families.

What surprised me at Beachy Head and other coastline there is there’s no fencing and it could be very easy to take a wrong step and fall down the cliffs. I’m sure I’ve heard of the odd dog falling down unfenced coastline there.

I lived there for 25 years and never fell off the cliff because Im not an absolute moron. I dont fall into rivers or use the M25 as a pedestrian crossing either.
Where they have put fencing up in Peacehaven its not only an eyesore but vandals pull it down. Some bloke took his kids up there years ago and him and one of the kids fell off running backwards with a kite.

TenTenTenAgain · 13/05/2026 13:57

Rip to those three women. Sounds like it was a tragic accident.

I had to check in with my daughter as she's at university there and was out celebrating a birthday with her room mates at a location near the seafront. Thankfully she and her friends got home safely.

Hopefully we get more information soon but my heart goes out to the families of the women that died.

Because it shows the absolutely rife tunnel vision on here and in the UK as a whole. Every time there's a murder by a man, people want to know the nationality and it's "Aha, was it done by a Dr or Engineer this time". If it's not small boats on Mumsnet, it's shoehorning trans people into threads about politics.

um… I'm not a racist. I asked why it was racist to speculate if these poor women might come from small boats.
As someone who has volunteered to work with migrants & teach them English, I find your comment rudiculous.

I’m not talking about locals more tourists. My stepdad used to own a seafront flat in St Leonard’s so I know the coast that way quite well. I was just shocked at how close you could get to the edge of the cliff at Beachy Head and how unstable it looked there.

It is unstable and people are warned but still sit on the edge to take photos. There are signs up.

There used to be signs over Beachy Head, warning people about going too close to the edges and that they're made of chalk back in my day living in B'ton. I presume there will be some signs still, must we mollycuddle everyone because they can't be bothered to take heed?

Comes a time we must be responsible for our actions.

rainbowstardrops · 13/05/2026 14:08

Live relatively close to Brighton. Just along the coast. I listen to BBC Radio Sussex’s breakfast show and a listener called in to say the helicopter, police and lifeboats etc were out along the beach. They sent a reporter and as it’s been fairly blowy here for a couple of days or so, he said the sea was very choppy and the waves were big.
Haven’t heard it from any official source but saw a Brighton and Hove Facebook group that bags were found on the beach (obviously don’t believe everything I read on Faceache) but it would point to late night revellers or more likely early morning swimmers.
Feel so sorry for the ladies and their poor families.
