This is pretty much what we were taught about how the South was 'settled'. Jacobites fleeing the Crown (lots of places to 'go unnoticed' in the Appalachians lol), Scotland and Ireland land clearances, 'Oglethorpe's debtors' in Georgia, religious migrants, 'remittance men', etc.

I can confirm by the way, that the stories of Americans turning up in Scotland and saying " My great great grandaddy was called Hamish Cameron. Do you know of him?"... are true. It happens. Or variations of anyway.

I also remember being sat in a pub once, and a Texan saying how Texas is so big it takes 2 days to drive across it.

" I had a car like that once", I replied.

I also remember being sat in a bar in NY, just after 9-11. And a guy walked in with the full Irish kit on. Got talking to him after a bit, and he had never been to Ireland. But he fundraised for the "cause". Free Ireland and Brits out.

It's a strange old world at times.

I once went up to Inverness to visit someone I knew there, and a friend of mine from Bristol asked me to see if I could put her in touch with a friend of hers who came from there but had vanished a couple of years earlier. He had two fairly generic Scots names: either his first or his last name was Bruce and I forget the other. I promised her I'd try, so the first evening we were there and we went into the pub I asked the barman if he'd heard of the bloke. He hadn't but he knew two people of that surname and gave me their addresses. The following evening as the shops were shutting we went to one of them, and the lovely woman who lived there said oh, yes, the one who went to Bristol for a wee while was a cousin of hers and his sister worked at the post office at such and such a place. So we went there, and his sister told us he was away just now, working on the rigs, but she'd pass on a message to him. Total people I had to ask before I found him, three.

Small place, Inverness. Scotland is maybe a tad bigger!

DB once put a picture in the family chat of him in the Whitehouse press office, behind the lecturn. (When he worked for Uncle Sam he had occasion to go to DC and meet various Senate committees).

The only comment I made was "I had a jacket like that once."

There was quite some huffing for a few weeks 😁

Ha ha.

Would he do it now though ? Or has the prestige of that lectern been damaged in some way now ?

I suppose its a bit like the military concept of you salute the rank and not the person. But now the current commander in chief has reversed that, that it is HIM being saluted and not the rank, then that tradition has in a way been sullied ?

Fingers crossed from me as well @AcrossthePond55

I agree with you 💯 regarding not learning from lessons. It's like a trip wire, the MSM always wants to see those who are supposed to be perfect, doing badly, as in making wrong choices.

@RedTagAlan

Yep, genealogy is a big deal here lol, probably because our 'US as melting pot' mentality has sort of diluted many cultural identities. Now that DNA is a 'thing' there's even more interest.

I don't claim to be anything but an American because I was born and raised here. That's my 'identity'. DNA speaking I'm 98% a mixture of various regions of the British Isles with a smidge of Nordic thrown in for good measure. But I promise when I visit the UK I won't claim to be English, Welsh, Irish, or Scots. And when I visit the place my grandparents emigrated from in Cornwall, I won't call myself Cornish, either.

My musing is now over, Just trying to keep my mind occupied until the polls start closing.

Breaking news CNN (TV); Todd Blanche, acting AG: "We are not moving forward with the $1.8 billion fund".

And I have a bridge in Brooklyn if anyone is interested in owning a bridge.

I expect the 'weaponization fund' to rear its ugly head in some other form as soon as Congress passes the funding bill.

logicisall · 03/06/2026 08:11

On the latest news that Trump is giving up on the $1.8B fund in exchange for keeping the no tax audits. My eyebrows are at my hairline. Surely this will not be acceptable.

Kuwait hit several times overnight with several people injured and interceptions along the coast. Airport closed as T1 was hit.

Thing is though. We know he did not write that. And we can't actually be sure he read it. We don't even know if he went to Trump University.

I don't remember seeing in the news if all the folk that were evacuated from the Gulf made their way back. I remember the "Starmer has abandoned" us headlines.

I did see this in the news today. And it looks like it's back to normal ?

Katie Price flies out to see husband Lee Andrews as he makes Instagram change | Metro News

The Husband claims he was arrested for espionage and was in a Dubai prison. I was expecting that story to expand a bit. That he would claim he was arrested for spying for Trump, So then we would have Katie Price sat with Trump in the WH as Trump himself secures his release.

It's all so mad really that if that did happen it would hardly raise an eyebrow.

Yeah. I can't say that has ever worked for me.

If I were to utter the words " I demand", it would result in blank stares followed by... "Fuck off".

Maybe I should stamp my feet too ? I wonder if that is what the Turd does?

Trump just named Bill Pulte the Acting Director of National Intelligence to replace Tulsi Gabbard.

Pulte is a real estate developer whose grandfather is in the Epstein files for facilitating the laundering of Russian money to Donald Trump through a real estate deal apparently brokered by Epstein.

There is more coming through on this.

" What he did have: a record of going after many of Trump’s biggest perceived political enemies through criminal referrals sent over the past year from his perch as Trump’s housing finance director."

Why Trump selected an acting director of national intelligence with no intel experience | CNN Politics

Mafia like then. Like a gangster paying off a mole in the Cop station to tip him off. A variation of.

Not only a sackable offence in most countries, but one that could lead to jail time. The article also says :

"But for Trump, the most compelling argument that ultimately won out was picking someone who had shown a willingness to take on the establishment and the so-called “deep state” of the intelligence community, three sources familiar with the discussions described to CNN."

Deep state indeed. He has been setting up his own deep state.

Why Trump selected an acting director of national intelligence with no intel experience | CNN Politics

The behind-the-scenes jockeying began almost immediately after Tulsi Gabbard announced last month that she would resign as director of national intelligence.

I hope Katie Price is arrested. Unpaid bills, flogging CBD, only fans etc....all supposedly banned in UAE. I hope she gets stuck out there for years.

Well the airport is open and apart from idiots like KP doing it for publicity, only the O&G workers I know have been asked to return to Dubai itself. Families are still staying away (with some of them over here trying to get school places for their children, as they don't know when it will be safe for families to return).
