And there is the indentured servitude stuff. And that has a strange mixup with slavery. Where some folk say their ancestors worked out of slavery and all that.

But the US was created to throw off the shackles of British oppression so all men (specifically) could be free.If it was just a ruse by rich folks to evade taxes they would never have freed the slaves.

Build a country on a lie and see it burn.

Well yes. The "We the people" bit does rather miss out that the definition of what people are was rather narrow.

And all the Mayflower stuff. That the Pilgrims fled persecution. Well no. They were told to piss off because they wanted to do good wholesome persecution. And everyone was rather sick of religious wars.

" Look mate, we have been fighting religious wars for hundreds of years. And now we have just got it all settled, you want us all to wear funny hats and walk around carrying Bibles? Nah mate, piss off"

In fact, in my version of history, the Mayflower was probably the first instance of crowdfunding.

Lack of clicks ?

And there is the 250th thing in the USA. News does tend to be more "patriotic" at big events.

Nothing to report. The big orange loon has turned his attention to another toy for the time being.

The next headline will be about the cost of living and impending starvation for some unfortunate souls solely as a result of his diabolical stupidity and arrogance.

The Mayflower arrived thirteen years after the foundation of Jamestown anyway. So "my family came over on the Mayflower" means you are not descended from the first European/English settlers in America.

And I do most thoroughly agree about why the Pilgrims slung their hook!

Edited

And and and.... from memory. The pilgrims were not actually in England anyway. They were somewhere in Holland. Nobody really wanted them.

And no wonder. See what their 300 million ancestors are up to now !

This is the headline at the moment on CNN.

"Strikes continue in southern Lebanon after Trump has heated call with Netanyahu"

The Art of the Deal.

The next headline will be that Ebola (an outbreak caused by Trump and his chums pulling the funding that was going towards keeping it at bay, because the idiot Kennedy doesn't believe in vaccination) has arrived in the USA.

The one thing that united them all was a desire to not pay any tax.

Off piste a bit but an interesting thing about the American Revolution and tax...

We all know that they did not want to pay taxes to King and so on. But actually that is incorrect.

They rebelled against the taxes imposed by the East India Company, which, as a monopoly, would have driven all the small and medium sized businesses bankrupt. That is why they attacked the ships in Boston. They never stopped paying tax!

It started as a revolution against monopolies.

Which is incredibly interesting given the way it has turned out.

Came across a book called The Price of Democracy by Dr. Vanessa Williamson - fascinating! Makes for a fascinating read on ... tax. 😁Who would have thunk it??

Not paying tax and slavery have the common element of keeping your money.

But slavery means not paying people for the labour. It would have had a much bigger impact on their wealth than tax.

That is why they fought so long to keep it.

Imaging for a second how wealthy you would be if you did not have to pay for the production or labour costs for every single thing involved in your average day.

The first 100 or so years of US history is the repeated attempts to keep the South in the Union, allowing slavery as the price.

It's a testament to how Britain ran it's empire that both North and South were afraid any split in the union would see Britain take the other side and crush the nascent tax haven.

Keeping an entire race in subhuman bondage was a small price to pay. And that attitude is what the US was built on, with one Donald J Trump finally getting to the top of the pile on it's carefully laid foundations.

The shine is coming off the US Empire as quickly as it did the British Empire.

This probably isn't the time or place to speculate on what the travel centred around a global sporting event in a country with 3rd world medical facilities might mean for the spread of any pathogens.

It's well established that the UK prioritised sport over safety in 2020. So I can see where the idea originated.

Trump just named Bill Pulte the Acting Director of National Intelligence to replace Tulsi Gabbard.

Pulte is a real estate developer whose grandfather is in the Epstein files for facilitating the laundering of Russian money to Donald Trump through a real estate deal apparently brokered by Epstein.

DuncinToffee · 02/06/2026 15:54

Pulte is also the guy who goes through the mortgages of Trump’s enemies, looking for mistakes, which he then uses as a basis to refer them for criminal prosecution.

See, e.g.: Letitia James

@AcrossthePond55
Is this any help?

Thanks.

See what I mean though? It shows fucking Kiley +18 points in what was considered to be a 'safely blue' district. And this is because the 'less popular' Dem candidates wouldn't drop out of the race earlier to support the front runner, Pan. If just the 'bottom 4' had done so, he would be leading Kiley by around 10 points. All we can do is hope to God those voters wake up and vote for Pan.

This is virtually the same thing that defeated us in 2016 & 2024. I am so upset at Dem voters not learning this lesson, even after the devastation caused by Scrotus.

Polls close here at 8pm PDT. It's going to be a long night for me.

Naturally, CA is what I'm most concerned about. But there are other equally important primaries happening today that will affect the balance of power in both the Senate and the House. I'll be watching those, too.

I am Scottish, and I have a bit of a different impression of the Scottish/Irish in the US South. Especially the Irish.

Ancestors left Ireland to escape persecution and famine. Scots left Scotland because Jacobites, and later the highland clearances.

And there is the indentured servitude stuff. And that has a strange mixup with slavery. Where some folk say their ancestors worked out of slavery and all that.

And Irish were persecuted in early America. As were Catholics in general. I remember reading something in the Federalist papers that Irish were not to be included in the 2nd amendment. They were banned from having guns at some point.

So they headed south ? Something like that anyway. Because they could sell themselves into indentured servitude. But even if they done that, they were not at the bottom.

If I am rambling rubbish, feel free to say.

This is pretty much what we were taught about how the South was 'settled'. Jacobites fleeing the Crown (lots of places to 'go unnoticed' in the Appalachians lol), Scotland and Ireland land clearances, 'Oglethorpe's debtors' in Georgia, religious migrants, 'remittance men', etc.

I think the problem here isn't Democrat or Republican.

It's American.
