Sadly, I saw that thread too. Very depressing how some posters turned what was quite obviously a tragic accident into an opportunity to blame migrants on small boats and bring Starmer into it again.

Piggywaspushed · 13/05/2026 17:17

And they now look very stupid.

Those poor young women.

Piggywaspushed · 13/05/2026 17:18

Correction : they already looked stupid. Just different stupid.

countrygirl99 · 13/05/2026 17:20

At least there were plenty of people calling out the anti-migrant posts. That was encouraging.

DuncinToffee · 13/05/2026 17:31

Just had a look, if the OP had any decency they would ask for the thread to be deleted but I think they got exactly what they wanted.

It was. There are still some decent people left on MN.

TemperanceWest · 13/05/2026 17:51

I just listened to some of Badenoch's speech. She was quite funny, but completely over-egged it and ended up sounding like a newbie doing their first stand-up gig at the Comedy Club. Plus she became so strident, it hurt my ears.

5/10.

Notonthestairs · 13/05/2026 17:52

I think there are plenty of decent people on MN. They just get drowned out by the performative twerps. A bit like Westminster.

There was a bit of brightness today - heard snippets of Naz Shah’s humble address and thought she did well.

DuncinToffee · 13/05/2026 18:04

Naz Shah was a powerful speech

Richard Burgon sharpens up his tie, and dares to dream

BIossomtoes · 13/05/2026 18:23

You’re right @Notonthestairs. I’m feeling a bit jaded.

You're not alone.

I see Al Carns is expected to stand. He’ll frighten the living daylights out of the Tories and Reform.

Piggywaspushed · 13/05/2026 19:14

Had to look him up! Selly Oak, hey? Studentville. Will go Green at next election.

DuncinToffee · 13/05/2026 19:38

Charlotte Nichols, Warrington North, is saying she won't step aside for Burnham

Maybe. Streeting’s majority is wafer thin and he’s tainted by Mandelson, Milliband is the past. Carns is a clean skin and would bring discipline to the party. He’s also relatively young. I think he’d be the party’s best chance.

Piggywaspushed · 13/05/2026 19:47

I went back to double check his age because I looked at his pic before. he's 46 but he looks 56! Guess the Marines ages a man.

littledrummergirl · 13/05/2026 20:16

I've not seen the news but has Starmer actually put digital ID in the Kings speech?

Is he trying to write his own death warrant?

I have always said Carns could be a contender. Farage especially won't know how to deal with him.

Yes. But the word compulsory wasn't used.

I agree. His politics are probably not for me in some respects, but I think a fresh face is needed. It would be a risk, but one worth taking.

Eta: not sure how the membership feels about him, though?

pointythings · 13/05/2026 20:34

I have been avoiding the news by going to see a horror film with DD as a treat fro getting the librarian job. It was in fact scarier than the news.

I’m intrigued, as I actually hadn’t heard of him until now; I’ve just been looking him up on Google. I wouldn’t say his politics align with mine from what I’ve read, but he would be a breath of fresh air.

cardibach · 14/05/2026 00:05

Carns has the advantage of the military background. Very hard to use the ‘hates this country’ line of attack.

Alexandra2001 · 14/05/2026 06:53

Angela Rayner has been, according to "insiders", been cleared by HMRC, so yet another slur she has had to endure.

The media really do hate her.
