Stirrings in the Libdems, though they're being terribly nice about it.

It's all moot though via MSM. Andy Burnham, and I hope he wins, will be an excellent addition to Parliament.

The thing is will he leave the Mayoral election open for a Reform win? He must surely know that might happen.

My understanding is AB will go back to being mayor if he loses the Makerfield by-election, so the mayoral election can only be won by Reform if AB wins Makerfield and he has to step down as mayor, triggering a mayoral election. Given that, Reform can’t win the Makerfield by-election and the Manchester mayoralty - only one of the two. I have a nasty feeling they’ll win in Makerfield, but I hope I’m wrong. I’d like AB to win.

So Burnhams team saying Streeting's intervention on the EU was done to make the EU an issue in the by-election.

Someone on another thread has said Matt Goodwin is going to run for Reform.

DuncinToffee · 18/05/2026 09:33

I thought he had ruled himself out?

I can't see anything on the news about it.

Wasn’t he humiliated enough at Gorton and Denton? Some people are gluttons for punishment.

Efacsen · 18/05/2026 09:44

Also thought Goodwin not standing and no-one named yet - ?most likely Reform candidate leader of the council who is a popular figure locally

That account looks like it wouldn't have any truck with any of them.

The person running that account, erm, shall we say, does not tend to present a nuanced and balanced view.

Surprised he didn't add family friendly

It was marketed as family friendly - as is a Raise the Colours thing in my city - family fun day to meet locally and March on asylum claimant hotel. Personally, I always thought maybe Alton Towers for the big family fun and maybe a nice local fete or fair for a smaller family fun day but what do I know!

Call me old fashioned, but shouting at hotels isn’t my idea of a fun family day out
Goodwin can fuck off as well, has he been asked about his retainer from Orban yet?

cardibach · 18/05/2026 11:15

Streeting seems to think we can’t see what a little weasel he is. He genuinely thinks he’s being sneaky. Clear as day he’s used Burnham to push a leadership contest as he can’t get the numbers himself and now he’s undermin8ng him. He hopes Burnham doesn’t get in but that he’ll the. Get the numbers himself because MPs have been convinced there must be a change.

I suspect he’ll have a rude awakening.

cardibach · 18/05/2026 11:26

I didn’t like Johnson getting rid of everyone who disagreed with him and don’t think Starmer should go the same way, but some of those who are undermining the government for their own egos need showing the door. And we need someone stronger than Nandy dealing with the media (plus she’s done less than fuck all for the arts).

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has upgraded its forecast for the UK's growth this year.

The growth estimate has been upgraded to 1% from 0.8% for 2026 by the influential body.

Risks remain, yeah thanks for that Trump.

That's hopeful news, despite Trump's illegal war.

BIossomtoes · 18/05/2026 13:07

Excellent news. Doubtless it will be ignored or scoffed at in some quarters.

Well fancy that. When people all over here and Threads were saying it would be downgraded if you pointed out that there is reasonable growth currently.

Farage lying again?

Nigel Farage’s claim that he paid for a £1.4mn house with his fee from a reality TV show has been challenged by corporate accounts that appear to show that the income remained on his company’s balance sheet after the property purchase.

^This 💯, sadly. The baffling thing is, that so many people fall for his lies.
