How ironic that on today of all days someone has started this thread: "Would you say non-white people born & raised in England are English?".

I wondered whether to or not, but decided to post there to explain what it’s like feeling “other”

We may be over cautious but from experience these kind of treads started by a brand new username have an agenda.

Just be careful because they often turn nasty.

I’m getting a real feeling that Burnham will struggle in the by election. What a mess. They should all have held their nerve for another year or 18 months and in the meantime taken some action against the press and against social media.

Piggywaspushed · 16/05/2026 11:04

The BBC does keep comparing it to the local elections - but they are different boundaries - Burnham polled hugely there is the mayoral elections (well ahead of Hannah Spencer!). When they went out in the streets including to a proper working men's pub, they only found one fella shouting about Reform. The rest seemed to like Burnham.

cardibach · 16/05/2026 11:13

Maybe I’m basing it on the fact that if I were in that constituency and had voted for Simons and then he stood down at vast expense to allow a man I don’t have a lot of time for (and who has had 2 chances at Labour leadership already) to advance his personal career ambitions while destabilising government at a dangerous time and giving the right wing real ‘we need a GE’ ammunition (nobody voted for a labour MP in a party led by Burnham), plus feeling he shouldn’t change the manifesto massively anyway because there’s no mandate for that (so what’s the point?) then I wouldn’t be voting Labour this time.
