Please help me test my marmite theory!

My theory is that liking the taste of marmite is a dominant trait.

I like marmite, my dh likes marmite… therefore our dc like marmite. Which is correct!

So… if neither parents like it, then their dc won’t like it.

But I also think that dc will like marmite if only one parent does. Because liking it is the dominant.

Please help me test my theory and tell me how it is in your family

(clause!!…. Just for fun, not to be taken too seriously. I won’t flounce if I’m wrong)

We all like it. I doubt that helps though!

DeedlessIndeed · 02/05/2026 20:54

My Dad tolerates it. My mum loves it. I like it, but don't love it. My sister loves it.

My husband actively hates it and my daughter dislikes it, but she is still young. She does seem to have inherited his tastebuds though.

DreamyJade · 02/05/2026 20:54

I love marmite. DH loves marmite. Our DCs are all haters.

CurlewKate · 02/05/2026 20:55

I have never met a British person who doesn’t like Marmite. Not sure it that’s helpful data…

tnorfotkcab · 02/05/2026 20:55

I love marmite. DH loves marmite. Our DCs are all haters.

How old are they?… I think this plays an important part in the test.

Probs not viable until over the age of 15!

thecatdidit · 02/05/2026 20:59

Both me and DH love Marmite. Our two eldest children (age 30+) love it as well. Our youngest (30+) likes it, not sure if he loves it like us other four 😁

Is this not the case with many foods? If parents don't like it they won't have it in the house so the kids won't be trying it in their formative years.

My kids love all sorts of things- mussels, olives, crab- that only one parent will eat because that one parent was seen to enjoy it and the toddler wanted to try.

It's not so much genetics but exposure I think.

I have never met a British person who doesn’t like Marmite. Not sure it that’s helpful data…

We stayed in an Airbnb with an Italian man, he said he had never tried Marmite, so as a parting gift we bought him a little jar. He loved it.

blackheartsgirl · 02/05/2026 21:00

my mum loved marmite, my dad hated it.

I love it.

only one out of my 4 dc will tolerate it.

I have noticed that the younger generation don’t tend to like it n you are more likely to like it if you come from the south east.

I live in North Wales, pretty much everyone hates it here,

Slightyamusedandsilly · 02/05/2026 21:00

I love Marmite. DC hates it. Thinks I'm nuts.

berry223 · 02/05/2026 21:00

I hate it, dh loves it, dc1 hates it dc 2 hates it dc3 isn't old enough to hate it yet....

TheTwenties · 02/05/2026 21:01

I’m a fan, DH is not although I wouldn’t be convinced that he’s ever actually tried it before deciding he doesn’t like it. Both DC love it.

ThatWordDoesNotMeanWhatYouThinkItMeans · 02/05/2026 21:01

My Dad likes Marmite, my Mum hates it, my brother and I like it.
DH likes Marmite. DD does, DS doesn't.
The cat loves Marmite. Especially if it's mixed with butter that's seeped through a crumpet.

Does that help?

Davros · 02/05/2026 21:01

DD is a freak, she can take it or leave it 😱 I love it. If anyone ever sees the truffle version, let me know asap.

PurplePantsofPower · 02/05/2026 21:01

Haha love the theory. Works in my family, I love, dh doesn't, ds loves šŸ˜‚

Butterbeanbutterbo · 02/05/2026 21:01

isnt it what you get used to/ get fed? none of my family ate it so I never did. DP grew up eating it and so gave it to our child, who now eats it (although interestingly he thinks the love it or hate it thing is rubbish as he just thinks it’s ….fine).
