Please help me test my marmite theory!

My theory is that liking the taste of marmite is a dominant trait.

I like marmite, my dh likes marmite… therefore our dc like marmite. Which is correct!

So… if neither parents like it, then their dc won’t like it.

But I also think that dc will like marmite if only one parent does. Because liking it is the dominant.

Please help me test my theory and tell me how it is in your family

(clause!!…. Just for fun, not to be taken too seriously. I won’t flounce if I’m wrong)

I love it, as do DC. DH hates it.

pinkpony88 · 02/05/2026 23:21

I can’t remember which one, but one of my parents likes marmite. Neither me nor my sister like it.

Reallywhatsthat · 02/05/2026 23:22

The easy way to spot a recessive trait would be 2 non liker parents having a recessive child. You need to try to eliminate that as a possibility, then we could also consider co dominance. I feel already there is clear everything it isn’t sex linked.
my DIL, lovely woman, doesn’t like marmite so definitely not a UK variant that all do like it

Ohfudgeoff · 02/05/2026 23:22

Me and DH LOVE marmite. Both our DC hate it 😭

How old are they?… I think this plays an important part in the test.

Probs not viable until over the age of 15!

I love Marmite, ex DP likes it both adult DC despise it.

IsThisEverOkay00 · 02/05/2026 23:29

I’ve never actually tasted Marmite, but interested to see how this goes.

Bergamotte · 02/05/2026 23:36

My dad loves Marmite, but I HATE it.

Nottodaty · 02/05/2026 23:37

My husband likes marmite & I hate the stuff.

My very fussy daughter who barely eats anything with flavour …happily has the stuff on toast.

My youngest is still suspicious so hasn’t embraced it so far.

Neither of my parents liked the stuff.

My MiL I’ve never seen her have marmite but she does use Bovril (equally yuck)

paperlightshade · 02/05/2026 23:46

My husband hates it with a passion. I really like it. My 16 year old tolerates it. My 12 year old would eat it layered on an inch thick if they could- they are autistic and have a thing for strongly tasting foods.

Even better than marmite is something called vitam/Essential yeast extract. It's only sold in the South West really. I could (and do) eat it from the jar with a spoon if and when I can get my hands on it. Now I really want some on toast.

Flintstonerubble · 02/05/2026 23:54

Not sure where I’ll fit in to all this. I’ve never tried it. My parents didn’t have it in their cupboard and I’ve never noticed it when I’m visiting my adult children.

I might buy a jar now to give it a go to see what I’ve been missing šŸ˜„

MyM8Marmite · 03/05/2026 00:18

I adore it, 4 out of our 5 children do too. DH and remaining child both hate it!

If you try it, just use a smear - not like something like peanut butter or nutella.

I love Marmite and was brought up in a fully Marmitised home. My DH can't stand the stuff. We have two boys, one loves Marmite (would scoop it direct from the jar if allowed) and the other won't touch it.

lalaloopyhead · 03/05/2026 09:10

I love Marmite, DH hates it...he doesn't even like coming near me when I've eaten it 🤣 DD1 loves it, DD3 has refused to even try it (age 18) and I am not actually sure about Dd2...I don't think I've ever seen her eat it.

parkrunpenny · 03/05/2026 09:10

I love it, DH hates it and so do our two daughters

inappropriateraspberry · 03/05/2026 09:12

I like it, DH doesn’t. Neither child likes it either.

Octavia64 · 03/05/2026 09:13

My dad loved it.

mum hated it.

i fucking loathe it to the very depths of my being.

i’m British

Jewelanemone · 03/05/2026 09:15

Mum loves it, dad hates it, I love it!

BillieWiper · 03/05/2026 09:15

I think if it's introduced at a young age it probably is more likely to be tolerated and then liked.

So it makes sense as Marmite haters wouldn't buy it or try and wean their babies with it.

I like it and so does my mum. I only like it on toast and not too much. I hate the idea of it as a flavouring on crisps, rice cakes or even on spaghetti?! Grim. So I don't really love it.

I reckon my dad must've hated it because I never saw him eat it and he had arfid and only ate about five things!

curious79 · 03/05/2026 09:16

I love marmite and my DD is a hater. It’s the most perplexing thing about her.

marmiteandcheeseoncrumpetspls · 03/05/2026 09:17

I love it (hence my username!)
DH hates it.

DD loves it (this never ceases to amaze me as she's very fussy!)
DS hates it

MrsCarmelaSoprano · 03/05/2026 09:17

We both hate it and I remember giving some to ds as I suddenly remembered it was good for babies but he spat it out,I still remember the look on his face šŸ˜‚

Sleepthief · 03/05/2026 09:34

I love it and two of my children like it - one more than the other. DH hates it and my other two children don’t like it (although less strongly than DH)…

bittertwisted · 03/05/2026 09:37

I love it
their dad hates it
2DS love, one hates

bittertwisted · 03/05/2026 09:37

But then I have ā€˜dominant gene’ brown eyes, but only one brown eyed child
