Please help me test my marmite theory!

My theory is that liking the taste of marmite is a dominant trait.

I like marmite, my dh likes marmite… therefore our dc like marmite. Which is correct!

So… if neither parents like it, then their dc won’t like it.

But I also think that dc will like marmite if only one parent does. Because liking it is the dominant.

Please help me test my theory and tell me how it is in your family

(clause!!…. Just for fun, not to be taken too seriously. I won’t flounce if I’m wrong)

Not for us, I love it but DH and 2x DDs do not.

AnnParrot · 02/05/2026 21:04

My family are all weird, all of them. DH and our three kids hate Marmite. I love it. They are strange and wrong.

NoYouCantComeToTheWedding · 02/05/2026 21:05

My Dad likes it. My mum would never even try it in a million years. I like it, but prefer Vegemite.

HughManity · 02/05/2026 21:08

My parents hate Marmite. I don't.

Latenightreader · 02/05/2026 21:09

My Dad loves it, Mum doesn't and I don't either...

Although the first (only?) time I tried it I spread it very thickly and it was not at all what I expected.

TofuTuesday · 02/05/2026 21:09

Oooh interesting.

my mum likes it. I love it, dsis hates it.
of mine, one out of four loves it.
dh hates it.

Stade197 · 02/05/2026 21:10

I love marmite, my partner hates it and our DS 4 loves it 😊

elliesmummy19 · 02/05/2026 21:10

I love it, husband hates it. Our six year old daughter hasn’t tried it but I do feel like it’s something she would like…

This doesn’t answer your question though šŸ˜‚ but maybe I’ll make her some Marmite on toast tomorrow to test your theory!

Bidetmadness · 02/05/2026 21:10

DH and I hate marmite

DS loves Marmite

BnmLK · 02/05/2026 21:10

DH has always liked marmite. I used to hate it but love it since I was pregnant. DD hates it. I am fairly sure for me it is linked to low vit B levels.

GrillaMilla · 02/05/2026 21:11

I love Marmite, I've tried over the years to persuade DH and two children but they all hate it.

On the plus side at least I don't have to share!

CocSoc · 02/05/2026 20:56

How old are they?… I think this plays an important part in the test.

Probs not viable until over the age of 15!

28 and 21. Though the older one did like marmite on toast when they were very little.

ExperiencedTeacher · 02/05/2026 21:12

I hate it, exdh loves it, both children hate it

EatingAJacketPotato · 02/05/2026 21:12

Dp loves it. I’ll tolerate it but prefer Bovril. None of the children will eat it although all did when they were little

edited to add - children are 11,21,22,25,32and 34.

Strandas · 02/05/2026 21:12

My parents hate it, I like it (have it once a month or so). My husband has it on toast on average once a year. Our children are somewhere in the middle.

RocketLollyPolly · 02/05/2026 21:13

Are you hypothesising that the trait is nature or nurture.

Cotswoldmama · 02/05/2026 21:13

I hate it, husband likes it, kids hate it

WeMeetInFairIthilien · 02/05/2026 21:14

My pregnancy craving was marmite on tinned pinapple...

CocSoc · 02/05/2026 21:15

blackheartsgirl · 02/05/2026 21:00

my mum loved marmite, my dad hated it.

I love it.

only one out of my 4 dc will tolerate it.

I have noticed that the younger generation don’t tend to like it n you are more likely to like it if you come from the south east.

I live in North Wales, pretty much everyone hates it here,

I’m from N wales originally. All my family like it. But my dh’s family, from yorkshire, love it

I love it. My husband loves it. So do our children. They, like I, have been given Marmite since more or less 6 months old. My husband had never tasted it, EVER, until we moved in together in our early 20s, because his parents hate it and never had it at home.
Not sure what that does to your theory! He's a spontaneous mutation, to continue the genetics idea, perhaps?!

CocSoc · 02/05/2026 21:16

RocketLollyPolly · 02/05/2026 21:13

I guess nature. But it’s most likely nurture

Barmcake · 02/05/2026 21:17

DH loves it, I hate it - never had it in the house growing up so that might be the reason why
DS hates it (25)

dlcy · 02/05/2026 21:17

I love, DH hates, one son loves, the other son hates

Mossstitch · 02/05/2026 21:19

I weaned my babies on marmite toast soldiers as didn't want them getting a sweet tooth and thought was healthy........I hadn't tasted it til was an adult but have learnt to like it so long as very light scrapingšŸ˜‹

TyneTeas · 02/05/2026 21:22

DH loves it. I very much do not.

DC couldn't get far enough away from their tongue when they tried it
