Please help me test my marmite theory!

My theory is that liking the taste of marmite is a dominant trait.

I like marmite, my dh likes marmite… therefore our dc like marmite. Which is correct!

So… if neither parents like it, then their dc won’t like it.

But I also think that dc will like marmite if only one parent does. Because liking it is the dominant.

Please help me test my theory and tell me how it is in your family

(clause!!…. Just for fun, not to be taken too seriously. I won’t flounce if I’m wrong)

My DH and I love it, and each of us have one parent who does. Our toddler also loves it šŸ˜…

@CocSoc I don’t mean to be pedantic but….
you can tell if a trait is dominant if two parents who have the trait have a child that doesn’t. What would disprove your theory is if two parents who don’t like it have a child that does. Just want to make sure the scientific research is as informative as possible!!

FWIW I come from a family where we all like marmite. DH’s are all haters. No data yet from DD.

troppibambini6 · 02/05/2026 21:25

Dh loves it. I hate it. Kids ate when little but all hate it now.

Namechangee11 · 02/05/2026 21:28

Well my two Dd's with a marmite lover both love marmite and my three Ds's with a marmite hater hate marmite... U like to think I've given them all equal exposure to marmite and the results are the results!!

PersephoneSmith · 02/05/2026 21:29

I hate it, husband loved it. Daughter loves it, son hates it. I think it’s random and not genetic.

I have never met a British person who doesn’t like Marmite. Not sure it that’s helpful data…

How many British people have you met and did you discuss marmite with them? It’s a food well known to divide opinion, marmite had a series of ads about people hating or loving it

Soontobe60 · 02/05/2026 21:53

I will eat most foods, but marmite? Never will I like it. I can’t even stand the smell of it so if I make toast for DH he has to put his own marmite on it. I also don’t like Bovril or OXO.
I think there’s a link with whether you’re a PTC taster or not. If you’re in your 60s you may well have carried out this test in school- are you a taster or not. It’s linked to genetics and it’s the ability to taste a compound as a bitter substance or as a neutral water tasting substance. I was a taster.

I used to love marmite, but it’s extremely salty so now I can’t eat it any more because I have ti follow a low salt diet for medical reasons. DC were all brought up eating marmite.

AliasGrape · 02/05/2026 21:57

I’m a hater, though I’m assured by those who were there that I loved it as a young child. DH a lover. DD a hater as yet (age 5).

GameOfJones · 02/05/2026 21:59

I love it.

DH loves it.

DD1 age 9 disproves the advert as she doesn't have a strong opinion either way.

DD2 age 6 is Marmite obsessed! She had marmite on her smoked salmon bagel today. Which is clearly insane 🤣.

jay55 · 02/05/2026 22:01

I don’t think my mum was a fan, my dad preferred bovril. My sister and I loved it.

FettchYeSandbagges · 02/05/2026 22:01

Another take on it - when dd was a kid, she loved Marmite, and it was about the only thing she ate in sandwiches. She went for tea at a friend's house and her friend's mum kindly bought a jar especially. She didn't like it, so didn't usually buy it, but made sandwiches for dd and her friend, who'd not had any before. When dd came home, she said that her friend loathed it, and no wonder - her mum had no idea how little of it you need, and had plastered the stuff on really thick, like jam. Whoops. No wonder her friend hated it after that experience!

AmusedMember · 02/05/2026 22:15

DH loves it, my self and 5 kids all hate it.

ThatLilacTiger · 02/05/2026 22:33

I love it, husband can't stand it, both kids like it (one as much as I do). His daughter he shares with his ex doesn't like it so I'll have to find out what her mum thinks of it.

NoMoreSocks · 02/05/2026 22:40

I’m craving toast and marmite now. Breakfast can’t come quick enough!

MyBraveFace · 02/05/2026 22:44

I can take it or leave it. No idea whether my parents liked it or not.

blankcanvas3 · 02/05/2026 22:53

My dad doesn’t like it, no idea about my mum, but I don’t like it. DH doesn’t like it and neither do our kids. So you might be right!
