Please help me test my marmite theory!

My theory is that liking the taste of marmite is a dominant trait.

I like marmite, my dh likes marmite… therefore our dc like marmite. Which is correct!

So… if neither parents like it, then their dc won’t like it.

But I also think that dc will like marmite if only one parent does. Because liking it is the dominant.

Please help me test my theory and tell me how it is in your family

(clause!!…. Just for fun, not to be taken too seriously. I won’t flounce if I’m wrong)

Mine didn't , and as it's quite salty , surely it's not good for them ?

JetFlight · 03/05/2026 09:46

We all love marmite except Ds1 who can take it or leave it.
He doesn’t seek it out but will enjoy it if it’s offered to him.
I never thought this was possible.

CoverLikelyZebra · 03/05/2026 09:49

My mum likes it, my dad doesn't, I hate it.
My DH loves it
Our DS age 16 hates it.

Definitely not true in our family

If you try it, just use a smear - not like something like peanut butter or nutella.

Thanks. I’ve added it to my shopping list 😊

EnthusiasticDecluttering · 03/05/2026 09:56

I love it. DH hates it. One DC loves it, the other hates it.

Wonder if it is like the coriander genetic mutation, where some people think it tastes like soap?

Maybe it’s a marmite genetic mutation ;)

For what it’s worth both my kids and their dad love marmite.

And to throw in another curve ball, garlic makes me extremely thirsty. Not sure if it does that to my kids too. So an extremely unhelpful post! Hahah

I quite like coriander but sometimes it tastes like soap.

MildlyAnnoyed · 03/05/2026 19:27

I love marmite. Their dad doesn’t & neither do the children. Disappointing 🤣

HughManity · 03/05/2026 19:29

@Flintstonerubble , you can use it in recipes, or drink it (like you might Bovril).

I keep meaning to try Spaghetti With Marmite | Nigella's Recipes | Nigella Lawson .

Kneenightmare · 03/05/2026 19:39

I love it as does DS, DH thinks it’s ok and DD hates it.

DeedlessIndeed · 02/05/2026 20:54

My Dad tolerates it. My mum loves it. I like it, but don't love it. My sister loves it.

My husband actively hates it and my daughter dislikes it, but she is still young. She does seem to have inherited his tastebuds though.

This is the weirdest part of all.

You don't "tolerate " Marmite. It's the food of the gods or can get in the bin.

EmbarrassmentLovesCompany · 03/05/2026 19:58

Oh, it appears DS2 belongs to the milkman then..

I cant stand marmite, DH would eat it if given, but would never choose it (he would eat anything you put in front of him, however horrific, as he's just too polite)
DS1 doesn't like it. DS2 adores it.

MyThreeWords · 03/05/2026 20:07

Everyone in my family mildly enjoys Marmite, without loving it or hating it. Probably some sort of genetic mutation, accidentally shared by both me and DH.

If my children have children they will be at risk of severe marmite-indifference, unless they take care to mate with a lover or a hater

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 03/05/2026 20:46

I love it
DH doesn’t mind it
DS doesn’t mind it
DD hates it
