I think it's already been agreed by analysts that the US is not capable of holding - let alone taking - the straits. They have had over 47 years of expert increasingly detailed planning which has always resulted in that determination.

If you want to control the straits, you need to control the entire Iranian coastline. Good luck with that.

Coastline and 100s of miles inland. We discussed this in relative detail when he said they were sending their hypersonics. And as @notimagain said, Trump is terrified of pilots being captured. So is this Trying to bring the war out of Iran and into the strait ? If that makes sense.

"Project Freedom" seems to be leaving the door open for him to send as many as he likes

For sure. But I don't think he has many he can send. Yes, he can send more than anyone else, but it is far from D day numbers.

And they move slowly so would take weeks rather than days to get anywhere

It does. The first thing a good military commander learns is that choosing where to have your battle - and ensuring it happens there - is most of the work,

The Battle of Cannae used to be a set text in British (and presumably US) officer training corps. I know it was taught at Sandhurst. The Germans were obsessed with it before WW1 - it was the basis of the Schlieffen Plan.

"Battle of Cannae ? Whossat then ?"

That, my military loving friend, is the sound of your ignorance.

this was also explained in tripus some time ago.
public voter registry was abolished after it lead to action by the kkk against black voters.

I guess also the 100 aircraft need to refuel which would involve other countries (who likely won't want to be involved) or vessels with equipment to do so.

Talking of aviation fuel, there might be an issue there...

:-)

Exactly, the planes are fast but they do so rely on the thing Donald has forced a choke hold on...

Wipeywipey · 04/05/2026 10:24

Re the Project Freedom (for whom?), I thought I should post the bit from BBC News in case anyone has missed it:
We've also heard an update from US Central Command (Centcom) on how it will support the so-called "Project Freedom".
"US Central Command forces will begin supporting Project Freedom, May 4, to restore freedom of navigation for commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz," it says in a statement issued on Sunday.
This support includes 15,000 personnel, guided-missile destroyers and more than 100 aircraft.
Centcom says "a quarter of the world’s oil trade at sea and significant volumes of fuel and fertilizer products are transported through the strait".
"Our support for this defensive mission is essential to regional security and the global economy as we also maintain the naval blockade," adds Adm Brad Cooper, Centcom commander.

Can't he just make some? I mean, how hard can it be? He has all this tech, loads of workforce and space for a lovely big synthetic airplane fuel factory.

C'mon 'Bonespurs. Get your fat orange ass into gear and do something productive.

I accidentally typed 'Bonespurs and 'Bonespurt originally 🤦🏻‍♀️😳

Hmmmmm.

So daylight attacks only then.

It's a pity Trump is anti green. Imagine how good an F35 with a windmill would be.

:-)

Yeah yeah, I know. But I bet Trump don't. That would be fun. Trump announcing perpetual motion windmill powered planes.

They were in control of the Strait before Trump sent his ships there, were they not?
It worked. It was even free!
US needs to go.

Yes I realise that but Trump has fucked things up. The Iranians now know they can charge to use international waters.

JoshLymanSwagger · 04/05/2026 10:29

"Our support for this defensive mission is essential to regional security"
Bollocks. Regional security is the US military (and 'Bonespurs) pissing off home and admitting defeat - something that they don't/won't do/will never ever do.

TheGardenRose · 04/05/2026 10:31

logicisall · 04/05/2026 09:14

Remind me. What happened when the Iranians were in control of the Strait before the US and Israel started the war?

No need to be sarcastic/aggressive.

They have changed their charge proposals I think. Free for friends, toll for non friends, and blocked for enemies.

Even when the proposed toll was for all, I think it was a buck per barrell. Thats still a lot less than the 40 or so bucks extra per barrell since Trump "took control".

It interests me how they say 15000 people, rather then the number of ships. As CNN pointed out, each carrier has 5k people.

Tbh I'm past caring who controls the fucking strait. So long as it's open to all

Sadly unlikely now Trump has caused this ruckus. It has shown how a peaceful trade agreement can turn very globally volatile when a greedy megalomaniac decides he wants a quick boost of voter patriotism and doesn't bother to do his homework. Fools rush in. This one seems determined to stay.

How could the US possibly take over the strait? What would that even entail And how would that be better? Trump is probably hoping to privatise it.

@Spandauer I keep meaning to ask - in your other life are you a tabloid headline writer? Your thread titles are brilliant
