I’m dealing with a winter heliotrope infestation and it can be deeply satisfying.

I'd love to know any methods that work. I've got a lot of the bastarding stuff encroaching on my allotment.

Giving birth. Extremely satisfying and powerful.

Working a night shift. I work in a care home and really enjoy spending time with the residents who want to chat at 3am . So much of their personalities are missed during the daytime routines etc. They are more likely to take their medication as well!

That bought a tear to my eye. I am a night owl and if I am ever in care home it would be lovely think that I could be in my room in early hours and someone would pop in to say hello if I was still awake (and I would be!) how wonderful. I bet your companionship is such a gift to so many people, how thoughtful, kind and decent and going above and beyond your duties.

Being really lazy. Smoking. Being unconcerned I haven't done anything especially useful.

Yellowpapersun · 19/04/2026 22:59

Mopping the floor. My favourite job.

I have found out so much about their lives just chatting ,they also enjoy midnight snacks and drinks..great for calorie and fluid intake! Love that time I have with these lovely people.

gherkins

I spent far too long wondering who would enjoy ironing gherkins.

Flyingkitez · 19/04/2026 23:08

I bloody love being at home. For years I rushed around with work and small children but now enjoying just pottering. I’m not even as old as this post makes me sound!

Sparkleandfizz · 19/04/2026 23:09

I love peace and quiet and not having to talk to anyone.

MrsMoastyToasty · 19/04/2026 23:10

Commuting. I miss the 30 minutes drive home with the radio on full blast now that I WFH. These days I log off , cross the landing to the bedroom where I sit with a book or the radio on for 30 minutes before I go downstairs and talk to my family.
Having a Good Sort Out. I'd give Dilly, Stacey and the guys a decent bit of competition.

And away from the bustle of the day. Honestly, you're a champ. I bet they appreciate you so, so much. Years ago when I worked in West Middlesex hospital I would go and volunteer in the dementia ward at lunchtime because we did an experiment called the 'perfect day' (which was a model for if the hospital worked perfectly that day and mainly it meant being fully staffed, including non-clinical people to do the non-clinical things... I did the website, press releases, intranet, all of that) it was clear that even staggering lunches for staff meant that there were gaps for the people on the ward to communicate with others. And I would give a donkey's hind leg a run for its money, so I asked if I could bring my lunch down and talk to people on the dementia ward. That's my skill?!

They said yes and by the end of the week they taught me how to feed others (again non-clinical, wasn't going to do anything I wasn't qualified to do) and it was amazing. I worked there for 18 months and for the last 12 I was there every lunchtime having lunch with people on the ward, sometimes in the main room - there was a sitting room - and sometimes going around individual beds. It was so enlightening but so lovely. I also only ever did 50 minutes because my office was 10 minutes to the other side of the hospital and it gave me enough time to wipe my eyes and pull myself together when I walked back to my desk! People like you should be so valued and cherished and I honestly mean that.

I enjoyed my second birth enormously, it was a real high. The first wasn't though!

My third was like this, I was so in control of my body and it hardly hurt.

Aah bless you. Thank you. Fair to say that my colleagues , the carers are fabulous as well. Your post makes everything about our job worthwhile. Xx

I think what you do is almost beyond words. I mentioned my limited experience to back up where I am coming from and so that you know it's not just words. You give people connection, care and love (yes I do mean love) at a time and place when they really need it. I take my hat off to you a thousand times over. Xxx

FettchYeSandbagges · 19/04/2026 23:25

Map reading. I could gaze at them for hours. Specifically vintage OS maps, but I also enjoy using a road atlas combined with a modern OS map to plan a journey somewhere. I don't like being told what to do by a robot plugged into my car.😂

Rollmop herrings. Very hard to come by these days.

Ballet and stamp collecting. Not at the same time, obviously.

Cheese on toast with added horseradish.

  • Watching live football matches.
  • Going to the dentist for my regular checkup and being told my teeth are still in perfect condition.
  • Eating salt….be it sucking it off peanuts, licking the salt rim off a margarita glass or even just eating a generous pinch from the palm of my hand.
  • Giving my husband a blow job, especially when I make his leg start jerking similar to how a dog’s does when you find their tickle spot.

Fermented food ( kombucha, sauerkraut, kefir etc). Feminine straight men. Rummaging through second hand jewellery in charity shops.

Another one who appreciates long haul flights and waiting at airports.

Waiting for your appointment is especially awesome as it forces you to pause and you can't do much else so it's like a rest for those who are constantly on the move. I just sit - no phone, no magazine - just watching people and listening to sounds like shuffling paper and filing cabinets shutting behind reception, the little squeak of shoe on the floor etc. I also love looking for patterns on the walls or floor whilst I wait. Boring for some but so calming.

Being on my own.
