A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Yeh that was ridiculous and off the scale, Labour cannot moan about the media when they joined in with that. Although they’ll probably still try after next week as an excuse.

They have already proven themselves immune to the shame of being revealed as hypocrites. It's their Kung Fu.

"Tony Blair's wealth is valued at £60million, and his 22 year old son Leo has wealth valued at £375 million"

I think you mean his 42 year old son Euan who co-founded a company called Multiverse which employs around 800 people and facilitates apprenticeships for about 22000 young people.

How that is ethically different from Sunak's father in law founding infosys I am not sure.

Apologies, you're right it's Euan who has the net worth of £375 million.

I'm sure he got his place at Yale entirely on merit.

What were Sunak's father-in-laws early family connections again?

strawberrybubblegum · 02/05/2026 12:16

It's a funny coincidence though, isn't it? How much wealthier recent ex-Labour leaders and their families are than recent ex-Conservative prime ministers?

I don’t think they realise they’re a big part of their own demise with this.

There’s some still loyal on here who really do cast around anywhere just not at themselves.

It is rather ironic. They're all loaded, yet they play poverty porn at every opportunity. Its like the four Yorkshiremen sketch. 😂

This tumble dryer nonsense
Miliband must be heavily invested in something relating to the style that he isn't banning?

Will the normal washer dryer combo thing that I have in my flat still be available? They really haven't thought at all about people who live in flats have they

Also, I don't know how manufacturing works these days, but I read something saying that they would be outlawing the current style by the end of this year

I don't know how many are likely to have been made already? I realise with our supply chain probably not a lot lot but it seems like very short notice

i've got three hairdryers (don't ask) if you include a couple stashed away at my mum's house

She often says to me that they ought to be recycled, but I genuinely told her we must hold onto them because they will ban powerful hairdryers. And they're not that powerful actually! My hair takes ages to dry.

Upstartled · 02/05/2026 17:42

Oh, I have no idea about the combos.

We'll all have our elicit stash of high wattage straighteners, dryers and hoovers that we can trade on the black domestic market in a few years time.

SpaceRaccoon · 02/05/2026 17:45

I liked the fact that Sunak was independently wealthy through marriage - it made him seem less corruption-prone.
Labour have been absolutely dreadful on that front.

Upstartled · 02/05/2026 17:50

I hope nobody tells the fuckers how many watts my steam generating iron chews through.

WaffleBomb · 02/05/2026 17:52

Oh God, don't give him any ideas about hairdryers. 😬

Sorry! Hopefully he doesn't read it

Also, there will be lots of new builds like mine who have signed contract for forward supply of things like washer dryers

I don't know. I was just surprised and to hear that something was coming in immediately. And it amazes me that this would even occur to him. Why would it?

Yes its a good point about washer/dryers. I don't know if they make heatpump washer/dryers?

Its all bs anyway. Europe has banned them, so obv Red Ed is blindly following along. We should be able to decide for ourselves which appliance is best for our needs and budgets. Every home is different. As I said before, my friend's heatpump (hotpoint) took 5 hours to dry a small load, and she never got it to dry bed sheets no matter how long it was on for.

Like Upstartled, I had no intentions at all of buying a heatpump. My vented one was brilliant and about 15 years old. I was dreading the day I needed to replace it. I dry as much as possible outside all year round, or on airers, so that mitigated the cost of running a vented dryer. I only tumble dry towels and socks (I wash too many socks to hang individually). When it died, there were so few vented/condensers to choose from. I'm assuming most are manufactured in Europe, so they've already stopped making them? Talk about nanny state.

Looks like Andy Burnham could have a smoother path. Get the popcorn.

Starmer loyalists on Labour’s ruling body are no longer prepared to block Andy Burnham’s return to Parliament, The Sunday Telegraph has learnt.

The Prime Minister previously counted on the support of members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) to prevent the Mayor of Greater Manchester from becoming an MP earlier this year.

But “the mood has now changed” on the 10-strong committee of NEC officers and allies of Sir Keir Starmer are not willing to stand in Mr Burnham’s way anymore, sources have revealed.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 02/05/2026 20:14

All they need now is a safe Labour seat and and willing MP…

Good luck with that!

And whoever walks would have to be made an offer - peerage probably. I can’t see how Burnham could offer his mayoralty in a job swap.

So to nominate the MP for the Lords (or for any other reward) Burnham would have to win the seat and then win a leadership contest. Those are long odds for a willing MP.

EasternStandard · 02/05/2026 20:41

It does mean Starmer’s in the NEC who is ready to vote in a way that could remove him as leader. How fascinating politically.

HeadDeskHeadDesk · 02/05/2026 20:51

I have a heat pump tumble drier in my holiday home abroad. It's not terribly good. Takes an age to dry stuff and quite often leaves them smelling damp.

It is fascinating. If that story about the NEC is true, Starmer must know that he's fucked now?
He should step down and try and hold on to some dignity. He won't though.

Thats what I kept hearing about them. The one I just bought is genuinely really good. It does take a bit longer, but its fine for me. I dried a full load of towels today in 1 hour 45 mins, and they were fully dry and warm when I took them out.

Teachers will “almost certainly strike” later this year over their new pay deal because it will fall well below inflation, which is expected to rise sharply due to the war in Iran.

The story about Keir Starmer's niece

Karl Turner MP has posted that he didn't know he had a niece and that it never crossed his desk - I can't work out if this is a joke or just him throwing shade at Starmer

Because he can't actually mean what he said with the wording he used...

I think he meant to write that Keir didn't know he had a niece who was standing. Enjoying the replies though, especially along the lines that he must be wondering who the hell he's stood next to in that picture.
