A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Seeing chatter about Streeting to replace him this morning - that would be better than Burnham or Raynor I guess.

zurigo · 02/05/2026 10:52

Has anyone seen that Milliband is gunning for dryers and leaving us with those shit ones that take hours to dry a bed sheet?

Just on this point, I bought one of those new dryers last month (a Samsung one) and it's bloody great! It says on the screen that it's going to take 2 hours 30 mins, but actually it's quicker than my old one (which was a Bosch and piece of shit!). Most loads take about an hour to dry, regardless of whether they're towels, bedsheets or clothes. Maybe it's just about superior Asian engineering? I dunno. But in my huge sample size of two, the new heat recycling Samsung is the winner 😁

You'll have to prize my vented dryer out of my cold dead hands. Small loads done in 20 mins, kingsize bedding, sheet-duver-pillows - done in an hour. I can tag team with my washing machine and get all the beds done on a morning. Milliband can go whistle.

Streeting won’t be able to hold his seat at the next GE. He’d be in a better position as leader, but the anti-Streeting vote last time was strongly Muslim and that vote isn’t going to shift to him, but further away from him. Plus there are Mandelson connections.

I don’t believe Labour MPs are that stupid as to elect a leader with a precarious seat. But you can’t overestimate the mulish stupidity of much of Labour, I suppose.

This was me a few weeks ago.

@zurigo Yes it was a Samsung heat pump dryer recommended to me by @SpaceRaccoon. It's brilliant.

I'm finding it really hard to be gleeful about Labour having a terrible night, because Reform won't improve anything and the Greens are the worst option of all. Plus, if we lose useless, dithery, totally lacking in convictions Starmer, who the hell are we going to get in his place? It won't be Burnham, because he isn't an MP and thank god it won't be Rayner, because the HMRC have been dragging their heels on making a final ruling on her tax affairs (let's hope they keep kicking the decision into the long grass!). But anyway, all that aside, it's only the local elections and we already know that this govt is incredibly unpopular. Personally, the only thing that would make me happy is if the entire Labour govt steps down and they make Kemi PM!

Edited

I can see how you might feel that way.

I think the locals are a fairly safe way for a newer political party to cut their teeth and give voters a flavour of what may come. So, that seems like a risk free insight for the rest of the country.

I think if Labour have a big loss then that will be the death knell for Starmer. I would rather have anyone else, at theis point. I certainly don't think he can be surpassed for cowardice, that's for sure.

And then there is that dark part of me that quite likes the politicking around it, for the sport of it. The same part that wishes for snowstorms even though I might end up falling on ice and cracking a hip.

@WaffleBomb its understandable 🥰 on waiting for the prison 15 months and waiting I am now a proud owner of a pop up shop in a local town it is absolutely dead like the grave its very sad to see what the current economic state is having on the high street. Good news re the prison I should get a start date 4/5 months hence 😳😳😳😳😳 even the admin lady said the wait was intolerable and no wonder they had no staff 😳

Good luck with your pop-up shop. I hope it was worth taking the plunge, you were right to be cautious.
Another 4-5 months wait for the MoJ job? That has to be the longest job application in history!

I'd rather have Cooper, Streeting or Mahmood, but the rest of them? No thanks.

Yes. I'm not backwards in coming forwards. You can disagree with me, of course. But there's no reason to be incredulous.

Nice bit of nepotism to add to Starmer's rap sheet.
But its OK when Labour do it. 🙄

How on earth can anyone say Labour are the ethical party with a straight face?!?

Not unrelated...

Tony Blair's wealth is valued at £60million, and his 22 year old son Leo has wealth valued at £375 million!!!

Even Corbyn (who thankfully was only ever leader of the opposition, not PM) has an estimated net worth of £3million, which is a bit mad for a socialist who hasn't had a career outside government,

When you compare that level of Labour leader's wealth to Conservative ex-prime ministers, it's pretty mind-boggling

Boris Johnson: £1.6 million (with a high-profile writing and journalistic career, both before and after being in government)

Theresa May's £2-4 million. She and her husband both worked extensively in Finance.

Sunak's family wealth is huge £650million... but apart from his successful career in Finance that mainly comes from his wife, whose father founded Infosys: an IT company which employs 320,000 people in 59 countries, and has a £54billion market capitalisation. So tbh, that seems fair enough, and nothing to do with Sunak's time in office.

No wonder people want to become Labour leaders!

Well sorry, but I am incredulous. I can see that you just like the sport of watching it all play out, but as much as I think Starmer is bloody useless I would rather have him that any of the three I mentioned and I can't understand why anyone who's on this thread would prefer to have them than him. But we're all entitled to our opinions and I'm always interested to hear other people's - even if it's just to disagree with them!

"Tony Blair's wealth is valued at £60million, and his 22 year old son Leo has wealth valued at £375 million"

I think you mean his 42 year old son Euan who co-founded a company called Multiverse which employs around 800 people and facilitates apprenticeships for about 22000 young people.

How that is ethically different from Sunak's father in law founding infosys I am not sure.

Upstartled · 02/05/2026 11:37

I don't like Rayner, Phillipson or Reeves. I certainly prefer the candidates you picked out. But I think they are all preferable to Starmer because he lacks, well anything that you could nail to a mast, he's like fog. You can't fight it, it just seeps in everywhere making everything shit.

I prefer anyone else too, some would give Labour more of a chance but not sure they’ll get that person.

If you subscribe to the others being ‘worse’ than Starmer, I think that many of us agree. However, there is a compelling argument that, rather than Starmer’s death by a thousand cuts government, a Rayner, Burnham or Streeting led-government would be so cataclysmic for the economy, that a financial crisis would precipitate the fall of this government and increase the prospect of an early GE.

Hence I am happy to see Labour internecine warfare.

I hold Starmer responsible for my family's business going under last year, so it's personal for me.
I don't pretend that his replacement will be an improvement, but I will thoroughly enjoy watching "Mr. Rules" being turfed out of Downing St.

I have nothing against wealth. And in fairness neither did Blair. Applause to his son for a successful business.

But it was Labour posters and activists that attacked ‘Richie’ Sunak and told endless lies about his and his wife’s tax affairs and about Infosys contracts with government.

zurigo · 02/05/2026 11:47

I'm not sure that anything would topple this govt early though @Hallowedturf. The last financial crisis didn't topple the govt and Labour, however much they're hated now, won the GE in 2024 with a big majority and arguably a resounding mandate to lead.

I would love nothing more than to see the back of this govt, but I'm extremely cynical that anything will result in an early GE, not least because they will do absolutely anything they can to avoid calling one.

Ikr, such hypocrites, the lot of them.
Was reading yesterday that Sunak paid for his own furniture etc when he moved into his Downing Street flat. Starmer and Reeves have spent £30K and £20K of taxpayers money on furniture and refurbishments in their flats, for a tenure which is unlikely to exceed two years.

Yeh that was ridiculous and off the scale, Labour cannot moan about the media when they joined in with that. Although they’ll probably still try after next week as an excuse.

The bond markets saw the end of Truss - a Rayner or Burnham government would make that look like a vicarage fete - look at gilts now versus the Truss era.

The mood is clearly febrile on the streets - people are feeling it, daily, and Labour are the last lot able to create growth - it’s too late - everything they have done has been the opposite.
