A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Nothing is going to get rid of Starmer is it? He is untouchable no matter how many bad decisions he makes and how incompetent he is and how much of a slimy liar he is. It is worryingly looking as though we will have him running/destroying the country until 2029 which is a horrifying thought.

Pacificsunshine · Yesterday 14:39

Wouldn’t it be interesting to peruse MM’s lost phone!

Upstartled · Yesterday 14:40

You'd think the party as a whole would have something akin to a survival reflex between now and then and push for a change in leadership. Although, for now, there is tactic merit to keep him at the helm as a whipping boy for the election fall out and then to endure another round of cost of living concerns with the baked in inflation incoming. But, at some point, you need to cut out the dead wood.

Unless they're as aware as the rest of us that the government is devoid of any appropriate successor!

EasternStandard · Yesterday 14:49

They might just sit it out and think ok five years and gone.

We’ll all just lose the will collectively bar a few acolytes still banging the drum for Starmer and Labour.

Well there's that of course. I'm sure many newly minted MPs are resigned to one term so will bank the money, pay off the mortgage and retire into oblivion.

And 'stability'! (What bloody stability?!)

Pragmatically, that's true. But in terms of political performance, most new leaders get a bit of a bounce, because they're not the last guy, they can set out a new direction, people will give them a bit of time to make that happen. The fresh start and a fresh narrative, an opportunity to present a new face, will become a necessity because none of these MPs are going to want the Starmer stink over their next election campaign.

Career politicians. No real genuine sincerity there.
Since Brexit they have been more accountable for decisions taken. They cannot throw them over the Channel and say ‘we would but Brussels rules require’.
And are not used to the accountability. Whether that is for explaining away clothes, concert tickets, appointing people who should not be appointed to run anything.
And even when required to be accountable. Not a chance.
He is not the sort to fall on his sword. So that is unlikely to happen.
They forgot they were not voted in because people wanted them. But because the right was split. But, as career politicians it didn’t matter to them. So long as they have the job.

First Labour MP to call for him to go

Mr Brash said: “I’m completely fed up about it, and I think it’s got to the point now where I genuinely think that as far as the Prime Minister is concerned it’s not a case of if – it’s when.

“Ultimately, we’re in a situation now where I don’t think anyone reasonably expects the Prime Minister to lead the party into the next election.”

Asked whether Sir Keir should resign, Mr Brash replied: “Yeah.”

That “yeah” is brilliant. Sums up the feelings of many I bet.

BluebellShmoobell · Yesterday 17:04

I think if he goes now and they replace him after the absolute hammering they are going to get in may it would be a general election and this lot will not give up power without a fight. He'll go after may 7th, if he doesn't then the saying dictators aren't voted out they are overthrown will come to mind.

Just listened to The Daily T on my way home. They said the govt is planning to prorogue parliament on Tuesday to avoid another PMQs before the elections. This means Kemi will not be able to question Starmer after McSweeney’s evidence on Tuesday.

Incredible. Did they say what their excuse would be?

I think they're going to pretend it was the plan all along. Who knows what they'll come up with. They've given up trying to sound credible anyway.

Several ministers spoke out about the decision to sack Robbins during a gloomy cabinet meeting on Tuesday, according to multiple government sources.

I‘m not surprised. Surely some of them could grasp what OR was actually saying.

Sur Philip will be the icing on the cake I reckon, not sure when he is. McSweeney might drop some bombshells.

Where on earth has that info come from? That's scandalous if true.

Yeah I think Barton is the one to watch.
Also Cat Little is in for a grilling (tomorrow iirc).

Just listened to Brash. He sounds thoroughly fucked off!

Oh goodo will listen to Cat Little. Not sure what her line will be.

NoWordForFluffy · Yesterday 18:48

Ahhh...apparently it was planned for next week, with the ideal date being Weds. Though there was a thought that it would be the week after to try to get legislation through the Lords:

https://www.politico.eu/article/kings-speech-date-set-for-may-13/

Running away at least one day early is pathetic though!

King’s Speech date set for May 13

The government is also expected to end the current session of parliament the week of April 27 — but that could slip over the pension bill debate.

Wasn't the courts bill due to go through next week? Or have I got my dates muddled?
I thought you might know due to your line of work.

On The Daily T, they said parliament would prorogue early so that Labour MPs didn't go back to their patch straight after another bruising PMQs. Kemi would have McSweeney's evidence to batter Starmer with by Wednesday.
