Anyone else wish they had a dining table for special occasions

Happy Easter 🐣

Just going to make beef and red wine stew for dinner tonight, chucking everything in the slow cooker as trying to have a low effort relaxing day. It's made me realise again how much I would love to have a dining table for occasions like Easter, Christmas, Valentine's, Birthdays. My house is small with no room for one, but oh how I would love to set a table to sit at for nice occasions. Just having a slight moan really.

yep , I have a dream of setting a table with lovely things but my little flat just won’t fit one (nope it really won’t and I don’t have a massive sofa) so I put everything out in my lovely dishes with fancy napkins in my kitchen and when everyone has served themselves ,we convene to the other side of my kitchen which is my living room and we all eat from lap trays … and get this we even keep the tele on sometimes. And every one chats and laughs and it’s all good. Making the best of what you have . Happy Easter OP I hope you have chocolates!

Yes, unfortunately if your house is too small to have a dining table you have to either go without eating or go to restaurants as it isn't physically possible to eat without use of a table🙈🙈🙈

I'm thinking lying across the sofa like a Roman Emperor.

We have a table in kitchen in this house and use it for all meals. In old house we had a separate dining room plus table in kitchen and it was nice to use at Christmas and Easter but a waste as not really used rest of time so not a dealbreaker when new house didn’t have a separate dining room.
There are lots of folding options if you could manage to squeeze one in. Personally I’d pick a folding table over other furniture as eating at a table is something I like.

Wednesdaysotherchild · 05/04/2026 12:32

Yeah, agree. We don’t have space and we needed a playpen more so we can’t even squeeze a folding one in…

That sounds very convivial! 🍷

We have a dining table in our kitchen and we eat at it every night.

tfu · 05/04/2026 12:33

I moved from a house with a separate dining room to an open plan living space - bought a smaller dining table which sits four and it’s perfect

It's so lovely that so many posters have taken the time to come on and tell the OP that they have dining tables that they enjoy using.
Such a comfort.
Talk about reading the dining room

It really is ! But I would love a table to set and style , I don’t have one so here we are .

MrsCarmelaSoprano · 05/04/2026 12:37

We lived in a flat for years without a dining table and I used to long for one. We moved into a house and have a kitchen table and a dining table and they rarely get used 😂 We have always had a very big solid coffee table which has always served us well.

Wednesdaysotherchild · 05/04/2026 12:37

Oh and we have a 3bed 50s semi but still no space for a small table! Originally it would have been in kitchen but the kitchen is tiny and we need cupboard/counterspace more. There are two ‘units’ of worktop without our mini island.

MissFenellaPrism · 05/04/2026 12:20

That was my question!

Then it's very fortunate that you do have space for a table seeing as you lack the imagination to think of anywhere else to eat 😆

Perhaps they think she eats from a trough on the floor? 🤔

Wednesdaysotherchild · 05/04/2026 12:38

We eat at sofa/coffee table with high chair next to us 😪

I reserve the trough for Christmas and birthdays

Yes, but you can still enjoy your food and have good company!
When we were first married, we bought a house, but couldn't afford to furnish it for ages. So for a while we sat on cushions on the floor to eat! It was fine, but I was glad when we could afford a table!

Caspianberg · 05/04/2026 12:39

Would you have space or layout of room to ditch regular sofa and swap to a more dining sofa with table?

Thats what we had in our old 1 bed flat. Dining sofa corner bench. Had a small armchair other Side of room also if I fancies curling up more. Never missed not having a sofa tbh, as dining table was more important like you prefer.

A bit like some of these ideas

Hellometime · 05/04/2026 12:40

These two don’t take much space.
I think if Op feels a table will enhance her life it’s sensible to look into options that might work on a tiny space.

Sorry, guilty as charged 😂I didn’t really think how it would come across!
I guess I wondered where people eat?? I’m clumsy as anything so if I ate on my knee, there’d be food all over the place! 😅

But still if you had no choice you'd have to 🤷‍♂️

@Meetmeunderthemoonlight a friend had this dilemma as she lives in a small apartment with her family of 5. They bought one of those folding tables and chairs which seats 6 and they take it out for Christmas etc. It looks lovely with a tablecloth, place mats and set. They’re quite cheap to buy in Argos or Ikea. The table folds up very neatly against a wall and looks like a narrow hall table when folded so ideal to leave a lamp or pot plant on. The chairs also fold and slide into the side of table so there’s no mess hanging around and the hall looks tidy. I don’t have a link but definitely you should have a look!

We only moved from a flat to house last year, and have a table for the first time. It is lovely so I can see why people long for one.
