Anyone else wish they had a dining table for special occasions

Happy Easter 🐣

Just going to make beef and red wine stew for dinner tonight, chucking everything in the slow cooker as trying to have a low effort relaxing day. It's made me realise again how much I would love to have a dining table for occasions like Easter, Christmas, Valentine's, Birthdays. My house is small with no room for one, but oh how I would love to set a table to sit at for nice occasions. Just having a slight moan really.

OP posts:

Your privilege is showing.
Utterly delusional.

Even the tiniest place can fit a table. Our 2 bed flat was about 40 square metres and we did it.

BlakeTheBlackBird · 05/04/2026 12:04

This thread is shocking.
Can people genuinely not comprehend that others live in small properties?

museumum · 05/04/2026 12:04

I’ve always had one. In my tiny flat it was a fold down one in the living room with folding chairs scattered around the house. The ikea one pp mentioned can be used with one side down as a desk too.

Nope - I don’t know anyone who doesn’t have a dining table of sorts and they come in all shapes and sizes - you don’t have to be privileged. Some may prioritise a massive sofa instead but I’d find a dining table a lot more useful.

My terrace house does not have space where a table could be unfolded, so no, not all houses can.
Utterly, embarrassingly delusional

I’m single but have one for jigsaws 😁. And, in the words of Alan Partridge, it’s “an extender”.

😅

Perfidia · 05/04/2026 12:07

I certainly can, @BlakeTheBlackBird.

But if the lack of a dining table is making the OP unhappy, there’s no harm in considering the possibility of doing something to change that. A small fold up table seems a perfectly reasonable suggestion. Even if it means temporarily moving other things around.

Pedallleur · 05/04/2026 12:07

Is a not like having one of those dinner service sets and/or canteen of cutlery that our parents/grandparents had? Never got used as they were for special occasions that never happened so we threw/gave them away during the house clearing

I have neither large sofa nor a dining table.
You genuinely don't know anyone who hasn't got a dining table?

ThisSunnyBee · 05/04/2026 12:09

Could you get some kind of small folding one or one that folds out from the wall. IKEA?

Girasoli · 05/04/2026 12:11

Obviously it's not at all practical to swap all your furniture but one of my great aunts lived in a little flat and instead of having a sofa in her living room she just had a wooden table and chairs and a bench. I always found it really cosy.

HolidayPlanningAgain · 05/04/2026 12:16

We moved ours into the garage about 18 months ago with the intention of just lifting it in if/when needed, we haven’t needed it yet so will probably go on the local freebay in the summer.

begonefoulclutter · 05/04/2026 12:16

I have a suitable dining table. But it is usually filled with random clutter, so it would be lovely to have another one, perpetually laid and ready & waiting.😂

wishfulthinking25 · 05/04/2026 12:18

Where do you eat your food?

Where do you eat your food?

That was my question!

TheEasterBunny3 · 05/04/2026 12:21

I cant imagine not having a dining table - where do you actually eat everyday? Even the smallest flats or houses could fit a folding table in

MissFenellaPrism · 05/04/2026 12:22

If you're short of funds, it's worthwhile checking out charity furniture shops, they have amazing bargains.
If you don't have much space, you can get ones which fold up quite small, as pp have said.

I eat on my sofa or standing up if I fancy a change.
Its not a lifestyle choice, its called being poor

Perfidia · 05/04/2026 11:34

How many people are you feeding, @Meetmeunderthemoonlight?

I fully appreciate finances or genuine lack of floor space might prevent it, but if not, you do still have time to send someone out to a local charity shop or the cheapest furniture store nearby to get hold of one before your meal.

(I was brought up eating every meal around a family dining table, and the times in adult life when I haven’t had one did feel rather sad in comparison.)

But I’m sure the actual meal will be delicious either way.

On Easter Sunday?? 😳

Ovaryinatwist · 05/04/2026 12:25

I can't imagine not having a table. Or do you mean you wish you had a separate dining room with a special table for special occasions.

TheChosenTwo · 05/04/2026 12:26

We don’t ever sit at our dining table unless we have more than 8 for dinner but we do sit at the island in the kitchen to eat all meals - there are 5 of us so even if there are just an extra couple we still manage around the island.
today though we have 10 so we’re using the table. It’s a bit of a PITA setting it to be honest, I’m not one for decor or fripperies and matching tablecloth and napkins etc and I find it all a bit of a faff.
However I’d really be sad to not have somewhere proper to sit up and eat so this thread has made me very grateful to have options and I shall put a bit more care into setting the table today.

AintNoPunshineWhenShesGone · 05/04/2026 12:27

Why are people asking where the OP eats her food?

Let me see

With a tray on her lap?

With a folding tray table in front of the sofa?

Come on, it's not difficult.

Yes, unfortunately if your house is too small to have a dining table you have to either go without eating or go to restaurants as it isn't physically possible to eat without use of a table🙈🙈🙈
