Anyone else wish they had a dining table for special occasions

Happy Easter 🐣

Just going to make beef and red wine stew for dinner tonight, chucking everything in the slow cooker as trying to have a low effort relaxing day. It's made me realise again how much I would love to have a dining table for occasions like Easter, Christmas, Valentine's, Birthdays. My house is small with no room for one, but oh how I would love to set a table to sit at for nice occasions. Just having a slight moan really.

@BlakeTheBlackBird i think a table and chairs used to be a basic for people across society, no matter now rich or poor, no matter how small the home.

Can you not fathom a house small or over populated enough that a table wouldn't fit?

Your privilege is showing.
Utterly delusional.

When my husband and I were first married, we rented a one-bedroom converted farm outbuilding which had four rooms in total (including the shower room and a galley kitchen). We still ate at a folding table and had guests for dinner sometimes. Priorities are not privilege, nor are they deluded.

Would you like to come to my house and show me where a table would fit?

Nope, no kitchen table either. I have lovely serving dishes and napkins etc but no table to sit them on.

do you have space for a folding table?

something like this?

Daftypants · 05/04/2026 17:46

I used to have a dining room in my old house .
We had a dining table to seat 6 at and 6 chairs but when extended we could manage 8 round it , needed to add 2 old fold up chairs though .
We tended to sit for dinner in the kitchen as much as we could because in winter it was warmer in there but it was a squeeze with us and 3 kids .
since then we have moved x 2 and have the original dining table in our kitchen.
I would miss sitting at a table , I see what you mean so I would try to fit a small drop leaf table in your living room .

Even the studio flat I rented when I left uni had a table. It is the heart of the home. Where we all eat, sure a tele dinner is nice every so often, but you can't catch up and talk balancing food on your knees - plus its terrible for your digestion. Where would you do zoom calls? Is that people prioritise the space for 60 trillion inch tvs these days?

No matter how large the tv, it wouldn't take up the space of a table (unless you lie it down on its side I suppose)

WhereYouLeftIt · 05/04/2026 17:58

Growing up, we had a folding table in the kitchen which we carried into the living room for dinner, and carried back into the kitchen once we'd eaten. Would that work for you?

Table was something like this:

Complete aside and not relevant to the OP, but for anyone who has enough space for a dining table your local auction house is the place to go. I've seen beautiful mahogany tables sold for £10, sometimes not selling at all.

Our current table is Victorian, comes apart into 4, seat 14. It’s lovely and was about £150.

TheCurious0range · 05/04/2026 18:07

Can you get a folding one? I have always had a table even when I lived in a one bed flat. Had to shift stuff to extend it for more than 2 people to use it but even on my own I sat at the table to eat.

tilypu · 05/04/2026 18:29

I have a coffee table with a top that lifts up and folds out. It's not as high as a normal dining table, but it's perfect for sitting eating dinner or playing board games at when sitting on the couch.

LoveHearts69 · 05/04/2026 18:44

Do you ever camp or have a shed for storage? We have a dining room and table but occasionally for a change I’ll bring a folding camping table into the living room so we can watch a film with a takeaway.

I put a nice scarf over it as a tablecloth and it looks really cute. You can adjust the length of the table too so if you’re all sitting on beanbags etc you can make it quite low.

Seriously?

Yes, seriously!

Nope - I don’t know anyone who doesn’t have a dining table of sorts and they come in all shapes and sizes - you don’t have to be privileged. Some may prioritise a massive sofa instead but I’d find a dining table a lot more useful.

Seriously? A close friend of mine is a home ed tutor. Many pupils don't have a table of any kind in their house. Is that too hard a concept for you to grasp?

canklesmctacotits · 05/04/2026 19:11

I’m thinking about it after a post upthread: I actually don’t know anyone in an actual house or flat (as opposed to a room in a house share - but even then the living room had a table or breakfast bar) without a dining table! Even when I lived in a studio flat I had a desk/table to work at or eat at. Surely a table is as basic a piece of furniture as a chair or bed? It needn’t be big or costly, and most people use them for multiple purposes. A table makes so much stuff easier! Is it even legal or own or rent a fly or house that doesn’t have a single room big enough for a small table?

Flushitdown · 05/04/2026 19:15

We eat at our island having got rid of both the dining table and kitchen table due to lack of use and better news for the spaces the occupy.

We do have a folding table which we planned to set up for special occasions but on reality we never bother!

I couldn't eat dinner on my lap though if we didn't have the island.

MayaPinion · 05/04/2026 19:16

I have a kitchen table that seats 4 and that’s usually enough. I also have a drop leaf one in the dining room that doubles up as a desk most of the time but gets used as a dining table at Christmas. You can pick them up on Facebay really cheaply. Just search for drop leaf or gate leg table.

Even when we lived in a tiny house we had a table.

Even my tiny campervan has a table - it just folds away when not in use. It is such an odd set of prioritise not to give you kids somewhere to eat as a family or to do their homework etc. But I guess just like everything in life some people just don't give a shit and it will someone else's issue.

You are hilarious.
You also realise not everyone has children right?

What has that got to do with it? Most people on this parenting site will have children. A table for two will fit into any house/flat.
