Anyone else wish they had a dining table for special occasions

Happy Easter 🐣

Just going to make beef and red wine stew for dinner tonight, chucking everything in the slow cooker as trying to have a low effort relaxing day. It's made me realise again how much I would love to have a dining table for occasions like Easter, Christmas, Valentine's, Birthdays. My house is small with no room for one, but oh how I would love to set a table to sit at for nice occasions. Just having a slight moan really.

Do you have a garden? Could always bring in a garden table with tablecloth etc for events like Christmas & Easter. I am living in a flat at the moment and we have 2 high bar stools for the worktop which works ok, but my daughter and I just eat on our lap. Buying a house in the summer and I am going to buy a table, but largely for when visitors come over. I’ll probably continue to eat on my lap most of the time.

What has that got to do with it? Most people on this parenting site will have children. A table for two will fit into any house/flat.

I'm very pleased you know my layout better than I do. I will immediately install a dining table

That's a good idea. I think you'll see the benefits quite quickly.

Have I asked for solutions?
I'm happy with my small home and lack of dining table, hence my posting to prove that tables are not a basic minimum requirement for life.

I have a couple of dresses that need shortening…

oh I don't do anything sensible with them.

Love my dining table. My husband built it so super cheap as I wanted a big one and they were all thousands in the shops. We can seat 10 comfortably and 12-14 at a push. Great for when we have guests for Christmas or events

Lovemycat2023 · 05/04/2026 21:49

Do you have any outdoor space so you could use your nice settings outdoors when it’s warmer? We don’t have a kitchen table (it’s tiny!) but do have a dining room table which sits 6 at a squish and I enjoy it.

itsnotalwaysthateasy · 06/04/2026 01:24

I have a dining table for 8 and the last time it was full was 13 years ago.
It's now home to GCSE revision.
How I wish it was full of people. I truly miss those days.

That's very sad. We use ours for every meal including breakfast, homework, having a brew, kids crafts, my work prep, piling crap. I can't imagine life without one and I'm sorry you are in this position. Am I naive to think you could store a pasting table and deckchairs somewhere? I'd give up the sofa for a table and chairs but I'm glad I don't have to.

Are you for real?

So why is it rude to say you're privileged to not have had to live in the way you are describing?

Did you have to add “utterly delusional” though? Clearly you were just being rude.

Perfidia · 06/04/2026 07:25

Hilarious - @Meetmeunderthemoonlight posted at 14.52 yesterday, explaining that when she redecorated she’d prioritised a huge sofa, and hadn’t been aware of fold up table options. (She also has a spare room that could have been a dining room but is now her husbands’s bedroom - she doesn’t say why that is. Perhaps he’s ill and needs a separate space? Perhaps it’s just a choice.

She doesn’t sound desperately poor, or savage …

But scarcely a single person has referred to her post since then. Just endless descriptions of your dining table set ups.

Hmm

Are you for real?

Absolutely. It's what we use for occasional/temporary need for more dining space. They are kept in the eaves space and obviously have other uses. Why not?

And why so aggressive in the middle of the night?

1990sMum · 06/04/2026 09:38

@SunnyKoalaits shock at the level of oblivious entitlement rather than aggression.

This thread shows such a lack of awareness. An increasing issue on MN.

As for the weird being the middle of the night remark, some people work nights....

SunnyKoala · 06/04/2026 09:51

Entitled to what? How?
