Years ago, DH and I were working in the garden and we dug up a gun. We had no idea what to do but decided to carefully poke it. We then realised it was made of plastic and a very realistic looking toy gun.

For a moment though it was quite scary.

When I was about 13, I was putting rubbish in the bin and there was a British army soldier in the garden crouching beside the bin with a loaded rifle. That really did give me the fright of my life.

To add we lived in a very naice middle class estate.

Yes. Two cases in 20 years of single guns left in loos. I have never heard of a bag of guns with ammo being left outside a major politician's house before.

Interesting that all cases were the Met, though.

IDK isn't there only one police protection unit in the country* which is part of the Met so they would inevitably be involved in any of these misplaced firearms events?

*Wayne Couzens old stamping ground?

Ah. I didn't know that.

Ah. I didn't know that.

I might be wrong!

Think that most of the 'protected' individuals are in London [at least some of the time] eg royalty, politicians, embassies etc

I can remember an IRA gunman being killed by an "off duty" diplomatic protection officer in the 1970s.

And of course Trevor Lock manages to hide his gun during the Iranian embassy siege.

During the late 80s there was a definite uptick in police activity around armed robberies. They clearly had a goldmine of intelligence and were ambushing a lot of robbers, quite a few of whom ended up unalived. Including the idiot who tried to rob a supermarket that was next to the University Electronics school whose 4th floor overlooked the car park. By the time we had got to the window after hearing gunshots it was all over. A lot of men in blue running around. After about 5 minutes a plain cloths car pulled up and someone in an overcoat got out. They were walked to a sheet on the ground which was lifted. They nodded and then got back in the car.

Wave a weapon around in public ? Just don't.

Have there been other incidents? I honestly am not sure.

I'm aware of an incident at a hotel where Prince William's protection officers were staying long-term whilst he was training. One morning one of the waitresses found a handgun left on one of the tables as she was clearing away the breakfast dishes. She picked it up (no idea why) and took it the receptionist.

Very soon after one very red-faced panic-stricken security officer came rushing back into the hotel and the receptionist asked him if he had lost something. The officer was clearly embarrassed and was very relieved to be reunited with his firearm. Funnily enough, nobody though it necessary to take photos of it or to contact a national rag newspaper.

Just off topic - another day another counter protest. Not huge and we outnumbered them on counts - they looked large with the huge flags.

Saw a cross saying ‘Jesus saves’ - they obviously couldn’t finish that with who he would actually save!

Bafflingly, to me, there was an Israeli flag amongst some Seig Heil salutes and Heil Hitlers. I would assume some stupidity here but apparently that’s not the case - I can’t find a different explanation though - maybe someone here could help on that haha!

So, I just learned today these Heils are not of themselves illegal, though can be part of public order/hate stuff - I had always assumed they would be illegal acts - so that’s my stupidity- I think maybe they need to be specifically illegal as they get more prevalent.

Efacsen · 05/04/2026 10:20

Happy Easter everyone - hope you have a lovely day

Happy Easter! I have challenged Dave and hung out washing. We'll see whether it blows away to Bury St Edmunds before it dries.

Piggywaspushed · 05/04/2026 11:04

My DH is a Dave. He does a lot of blustering and whining to be fair.

BestIsWest · 05/04/2026 12:02

Happy Easter all. May you have a peaceful day with plenty of chocolate.

Some of the local flagshaggers have been making large crosses on the hillsides. A post from Voice of Wales (hateful bunch) came up on my FB celebrating this. They wouldn’t know Christianity if it whacked them on the head. I have blocked them now.

dontcallmelen · 05/04/2026 12:51

Happy Easter all you lovely people I’m out for lunch so no cooking & don’t have to endure the smell of lamb cooking in the house a double win for me
