Only today I learned you can get a (presumably USB charged) heated butter knife ....

Wonder if it works on rock hard peanut butter.

EXC: Kemi Badenoch has denied that a local election slogan to 'lower taxes' meant council tax would actually go down.

The Conservative Leader told ITV News Meridian: "Council tax goes up with inflation… We’re not saying people are going to have less [tax] than they paid before."

Badenoch stealing from the Farage playbook again!

I refer you to the post truth world from yesterday.

Be prepared for this to be spun as "Starmer attempts to prevent Tories from lowering tax" in the headlines.

She’s jumped on the Farage bandwagon, that was his gaslight too.

I predict that the Conservatives will keep Hampshire, Harrow, and a NOC in Hillingdon, with a Cons lead. Can't see them doing any better than that.

I doubt they’ll keep Harrow, it’s vacillated between Tory and LibDem for years. I’d put money on it being hung after May.

placemats · 24/03/2026 15:37

They may keep Kensington and Chelsea and it's definitely one to watch.

Ah - Harrow. Which voted Labour in to get Comprehensive education through, and then kicked them out next election.

As someone who took 11 O Levels and left with 9 (amazingly Latin not being one) I don't really have anything bad to say about being packed off to the local comp.

Our next door but one neighbour was a Tory councillor. In 1977 they removed our street (actually just our section of street) from the street party planning because "There are too many Asians living there". You will notice the quote marks. That's because it's a quote. I can't repeat what DM replied with. Of course he fucked off with his family to the town hall shindig. Because he was a Tory and therefore a cunt.

(DB sometimes reminds me to be careful as his first and only born followed in politics and is also a cunt).

cardibach · 24/03/2026 16:28

I think Perdy would get on with Fettucine @pointythings she’s good at general disapproval too. Though actually her dislike of people who aren’t either a) me, who she tolerates, or b) scared of cats (these she jumps on) is only surpassed by her total lack of patience with other cats. Here is cat tax of her yowling at the neighbour cat boy who is very beautiful and friendly (and has only just moved in). He wants to be friends to the extent he stands there while she yowls then when she comes in calls mournfully for a while. She is not prepared to countenance such audacity.
(Please excuse the garden. The bit inside the catio is cat enrichment and never touched. The lawn outside was overrun with ox eye daisies last year and I’ve just started the fight back).

I was just watching a video from Tom Baker, so I thought I'd give the thread some Dalek tax.

Thanks for the new thread Duncin. I'll have to take a rain check on my tax until I get home tomorrow, my phone won't let me post a pic of my beautiful flowers.
@placemats No to Reform in Hampshire thank you very much!
And @cardibach I have said it before and I will say it again ( as a non cat person, sorry) Purdy is one beautiful feline.

One of our finest voices.

Whilst coming out of Gresse Street in London, when in the car, we waved to Tom Baker to cross. He thanked us in his beautiful voice and we were most thankful.

Percy is a non-person cat so that’s fine! She’s a bit of a dick, truth be told, but a glamorous one!

Cheguevarahamster · 24/03/2026 19:22

Thanks for the new thread @DuncinToffee . Here's my tax. My cat - furious at being in the garden watching us have dinner. This is despite there being a perfectly working cat flap.

Perdy. As I typed. Stupid autocorrect.

Karistyleaftea · 24/03/2026 19:46

Oh and I spelled Perdy wrong sorry!
If she is a non "person " cat and I am a non "cat" person there could well be a chance we could get along just fine.
You think?

Cheguevarahamster · 24/03/2026 19:55

Sending Tom Baker love. Met him at a DW convention. What a splendid chap.

LizzieW1969 · 24/03/2026 20:24

Here are my 3 cats, Lightning (male) and Lizzie and Mittens (female). Posting this as my tax payments. Lightning is miaowing loudly to complain about being wet. (Well, if you will go out into the rain!)

I can't find it immediately, but he voiced an ad for Shell (or maybe BP) reciting Wordsworths "Composed upon Westminster Bridge, September 3, 1802"

Earth has not any thing to show more fair:
Dull would he be of soul who could pass by
A sight so touching in its majesty:
This City now doth, like a garment, wear
The beauty of the morning; silent, bare,
Ships, towers, domes, theatres, and temples lie
Open unto the fields, and to the sky;
All bright and glittering in the smokeless air.
Never did sun more beautifully steep
In his first splendour, valley, rock, or hill;
Ne'er saw I, never felt, a calm so deep!
The river glideth at his own sweet will:
Dear God! the very houses seem asleep;
And all that mighty heart is lying still!

BIossomtoes · 24/03/2026 21:14

I’d love it if you found it Jane. It’s one of my favourites. I often wonder what Wordsworth would make of that skyline now.

BestIsWest · 24/03/2026 21:25

I can’t link it unfortunately but if you search for Samuel West Pandemic poems, he recorded a lot of poems including Westminster Bridge - during the pandemic (you’d never have guessed that would you?).
They are all on Soundcloud. Some wonderful stuff in there.
