What song gets you every time

For me it’s Bryan Adams - “Heaven.” It has such a powerful tug on my heart and soul. It says something profound. It’s so intimate and musically simple but beautifully composed. It feels raw somehow.

I have always loved it, will always love it. Never get tired of listening to it and feel the same deep pulls of profound emotion when I hear it.

What song has this effect on you?

Landslide - Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks

I remember taking the train to see my DM who was very ill in hospital and as we passed through the snowy landscape the line "Saw my reflection in the snow covered hills" popped into my head. DM died shortly afterwards and the song always makes me think of her. (Although that's not what the song's about).

Good thread!
So many...
Songbird - Fleetwood Mac
Linger - The Cranberries

Spring to mind...lots more...

Kids from Fame. Starmaker. The video especially. Mr Crandall sits on a chair and everyone is around him singing, as budget cuts are forcing him to leave the school, in reality he is dying of cancer and the emotion and the tears are real as the cast are saying goodbye to him forever. It gets me everytime. Even writing this has me crying!

Whatineed · 15/03/2026 18:09

Have you heard the First Aid Kit cover of America? It’s on YouTube Paul Simon is in the audience and is visibly impressed/moved

@Nicecatneighbour I thought I was the only person who knew that song! Absolutely has me in bits every time

Mapletreelane · 15/03/2026 18:48

A Different Corner by George Michael. Beautiful song, beautiful voice and still can't believe he's gone.

This is a silly one...I got invested in Glee recently, watching with my DD16. Seasons of Love cover by the cast following the death of Cory Monteith /Finn. Seeing the real and raw grief of the cast, and knowing there was more sadness to come. Its always been a moving song anyway.

TheGirlWhoLived · 15/03/2026 18:55

@StationJack that makes a lot of sense 🤣 thanks

TheGirlWhoLived · 15/03/2026 18:57

The last funeral I went to had “Hear You Me’ by Jimmy Eat World, that was very moving

Skinny Love by Birdy.

Makes me think of a very bad break up.

Skyline Pigeon by Elton John, and Ralph McTells Streets of London.

There are a few for me, but one that immediately comes to mind is Nimrod by Edgar Elgar. It's not a song, as in no lyrics, but the music moves me each and every time. It's played at Remembrance ceremonies. I can't cry on cue, but put an earpiece on me and play Nimrod, guaranteed I'll be in floods of tears.

Ninrod for me too. I’ll be in tears after the first few bars

The Fields of Athenry. My DF loved this song and he sang this song at every London Irish and Ireland game of rugby. It was sung at his funeral. It makes me sad and happy all at once.

Tears in Heaven
Utterly heartbreaking

Danny Boy -
…….If I am dead, as dead I well might be
Ye’ll come and find the place where I am lying and kneel and say an Ave there for me.
And I will hear though soft you tread above me
And oh my grave will warmer sweeter be.
For you will bend and tell me that you love me.
And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me.
My dh didn’t know who his Mum was so those words brought a lump to his throat when he heard them (and tears to mine on his behalf).
However he did meet her a few years before she died, it was a lovely reunion and now he does visit her grave when he can. It’s not local.

BillieWiper · 15/03/2026 19:17

River deep, mountain high by Tina turner.

It was one of the records me and my dad used to dance and sing along to when I was a kid.

IloveJonBonJovi · 15/03/2026 19:17

Bryan Adams. Please forgive me.
Terry Jacks. Seasons in the sun.

MMBaranova · 15/03/2026 19:22

It lay buried here.
It lay deep inside me.
It's so deep I don't think that I can speak about it.
It could take me all of my life,
But it would only take a moment to
Tell you what I'm feeling,
But I don't know if I'm ready yet.
...

Love and Anger - Kate Bush.

It's up album from This Woman's Work.

SFHJ · 15/03/2026 19:23
