What song gets you every time

For me it’s Bryan Adams - “Heaven.” It has such a powerful tug on my heart and soul. It says something profound. It’s so intimate and musically simple but beautifully composed. It feels raw somehow.

I have always loved it, will always love it. Never get tired of listening to it and feel the same deep pulls of profound emotion when I hear it.

What song has this effect on you?

Elton john and that one about princess diana.
not the marilyn monroe version - i'm totally fine with that. It was in my very early 20s. When I heard the Princess Diana version one day around the anniversary and I'm the same age as Prince William and just thinking about the loss of your mother so young just absolutely choked me up, and ever since then, I cannot cope with that song.

I can’t listen to ‘Ronan’ by Taylor Swift.

MyNameIsNotBroOrBruh · 15/03/2026 21:18

Call your mom - Noah Kahan

Swan Song - Amble

Before you go - Lewis Capaldi

Visiting Hours - Ed Sheeran

Dannys Song - Loggins & Messina

Billy Stay - Zach Bryan

Tears In Heaven - Eric Clapton

Goodbye My Lover - James Blunt

The Best Day - Taylor Swift

Ronan - Taylor Swift

Gordon lightfoot - i you could read my mind

bogginbluesticks · 15/03/2026 21:22

Oh another, Godspeed by the Chicks.
A friend shared it after her 12 year old son's death so it makes me think of him.

Cast, Walkaway.
If you've done, all there is to do
There ain't nothing left for you
Just walkaway, walkaway, walkaway

And Hearts of olden glory by Runrig.

Ferrfoxache · 15/03/2026 21:26

'Who Wants To Live Forever' by Queen. There's a version with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and it's just spine tingling. Gets me every time.

A Different Corner by George Michael. Beautiful song, beautiful voice and still can't believe he's gone.

This is a silly one...I got invested in Glee recently, watching with my DD16. Seasons of Love cover by the cast following the death of Cory Monteith /Finn. Seeing the real and raw grief of the cast, and knowing there was more sadness to come. Its always been a moving song anyway.

Yes, agree with A Different Corner, also Jesus to a Child, and You Have Been Loved, by George Michael. No singer has the emotional impact for me. What a voice, what a wonderful soul, what a loss.

Birthdaycake369 · 15/03/2026 21:28

Family portrait by Pink

champagneplanet · 15/03/2026 21:29

@GriseldaandMike Scrolled through to see if anyone else had metioned James Blunt, The Girl That Never Was, it’s a beautiful, heartbreaking song. I honestly believe it helped me on some level.

@NotAWurstToItIve been to so many funerals that played YNWA, DH is a Liverpool fan and it makes me emotional hearing it at the football never mind a funeral.

I’ll think of more…

Procol harum, whiter shade of pale or edison lighthouse, love grows 🥰.

I love that song. I like a lot of his songs actually.

MissSkate · 15/03/2026 21:32

Another one for Del Amitri - Driving with the brakes on.

Cyndi Lauper - Time after time. Remind me of singing it to my newborn daughter whilst thinking of how absolutely shit my own mother is. I was singing it to her so she knew I'd always be there for her (time after time)

And you'll all think I'm weird but I can't listen to The Pogues - Fairytale of New York without bubbling up especially

'I could have been someone", well, so could anyone
You took my dreams from me when I first found you
I kept them with me, babe, I put them with my own
Can't make it all alone, I've built my dreams around you

Has me in floods every time, every year!

The Drugs Don't Work by The Verve. It's about Richard Ashcroft's father dying and in pain.

Yes this, and also Lucky Man. Not a sad song but there’s something about Richard Ashcroft’s voice.

Also

Leonard Cohen - Famous Blue Raincoat
Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
Ray Lamontagne - Jolene

Timble · 15/03/2026 21:35

Bad dream - Keane, it was in a sad episode of the comedy show scrubs and it always makes me cry!!

Love this song but prefer the DJ Sammy version.

This Woman's Work, Kate Bush

Same, came to post this. I always think of my Sister and how desperate she was when she killed herself ❤️

stomachamelon · 15/03/2026 21:40

@NippyNinjaCrabi am really sorry for your loss and also that your sister felt that was her only way out. Big hug x

The hymn " Be Not Afraid" ( I go before you always).
It gives me chills every time I hear it.
A hymn often chosen to be sung at funerals, it gets me every time.

On the complete other end of the musical spectrum " Puff the Magic Dragon" has never failed to bring tears to my eyes, it just makes me feel really sad, and it always brings on the tears.

Oh my gosh yes puff the magic dragon so bloody sad “now dragons live forever but not so little boys”

god this thread is making me so sad

Dance with my father - Luther Vandross. Lost my Dad last year and my Mum many years ago. I don't get too emotional with films/music/books etc but this song just gets me every time.

Also, Supermarket Flowers by Ed Sheeran. I had cancer in 2019 and this song used to rip me apart when I thought of leaving my DCs behind and imagine this being played at my own funeral.

Thankfully I'm still here 💪

We chose supermarket flowers for my wee MIL funeral, I've not listened to it since, 💔
