What song gets you every time

For me it’s Bryan Adams - “Heaven.” It has such a powerful tug on my heart and soul. It says something profound. It’s so intimate and musically simple but beautifully composed. It feels raw somehow.

I have always loved it, will always love it. Never get tired of listening to it and feel the same deep pulls of profound emotion when I hear it.

What song has this effect on you?

Something Inside So Strong. I know the message is uplifting but the reminder of what absolute arseholes people can be always gets me.

It was on the list for Young Voices this year. I'm glad it was dark in the arena and DC had no chance of seeing me 😂

Bruce Springstean, If I should fall behind.

lifeontheroundabout · 15/03/2026 19:31

The hymn " Be Not Afraid" ( I go before you always).
It gives me chills every time I hear it.
A hymn often chosen to be sung at funerals, it gets me every time.

On the complete other end of the musical spectrum " Puff the Magic Dragon" has never failed to bring tears to my eyes, it just makes me feel really sad, and it always brings on the tears.

PopScene00 · 15/03/2026 19:31

Praying for time - George Michael

PersephonePomegranate · 15/03/2026 19:31

Seeing other people's contributions has reminded me Tears in Heaven also gets me too. I just cannot listen that song, it's far too sad.

I agree with PPs that Landslide is a really beautful song too.

Landslide - Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks

I remember taking the train to see my DM who was very ill in hospital and as we passed through the snowy landscape the line "Saw my reflection in the snow covered hills" popped into my head. DM died shortly afterwards and the song always makes me think of her. (Although that's not what the song's about).

I’m so sorry for the loss of your mum. This song for me too. Can’t believe how young Stevie Nicks was when she wrote it - it only really hit me as a song in my mid thirties. Love the cover by the Chicks too.

The other one is Casimir Pulaski Day by Sufjan Stevens. It’s about a teenage girl dying of cancer and it’s heartbreaking.

GriseldaandMike · 15/03/2026 19:37

Bloody James Bloody Blunt The girl who Never Was.

Big ugly crying every time. As someone who struggled to become a parent I had to pull the car over the first time I heard it and weep in a lay by.

Sarah McLochlan I will Remember You.

And yes to the pp who said Lightening Crashes.

No Need To Argue- The Cranberries and Hope There's Someone by Anthony and The Johnsons

ToadRage · 15/03/2026 19:57

My love, my life from Mamma Mia 2 - i cry everytime I watch this.
Baby Mine from Dumbo - i refuse to watch this movie but i found myself bawling even on a Disney song countdown.
Whisky Lullaby by Alison Kraus and Brad Paisley- was shown this when i asked my husband the saddest song he knew.

NotAWurstToIt · 15/03/2026 20:06

You’ll never walk alone - I’m not a football fan, but it was played at the funeral of a lovely colleague who passed far too young and was a Liverpool fan. Everyone sang and it was incredibly beautiful and incredibly sad at the same time.

FartNRoses · 15/03/2026 20:08

Songbird - by Eva Cassidy
Fix You by Coldplay
🥺🥺🥺

Ilikeanimalsmorethanpeople · 15/03/2026 20:10

Drops of Jupiter - Train
Dancing in the Sky - Dani and Izzy

Some really lovely but sad songs mentioned already!

Greebosmum · 15/03/2026 20:16

Have posted this before but it's still true. I'm an old gimmer and my Dad was in Bomber Command in WW2. Lucky for me he lived well into his 90s. For his funetal we thought something a bit lighthearted would brighten us up on the way out, so we chose Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines in honour of his RAF service. It's such a silly song but because of the association it now has I ugly cry every time I hear it.

ChaChaChaChanges · 15/03/2026 20:17

She’s Leaving Home by the Beatles.

Slipping Through My Fingers, Abba.

Impossible to listen to without crying.

Hey Jude by The Beatles was a struggle for YEARS as it was played at my DB's friend's funeral. They were 17 when he died and it broke everyone's hearts, I couldn't listen to it without crying for years but cope better now.

Came here to say this too. I have a teenage daughter and I literally sob when I hear slipping through my fingers.

Kids from Fame. Starmaker. The video especially. Mr Crandall sits on a chair and everyone is around him singing, as budget cuts are forcing him to leave the school, in reality he is dying of cancer and the emotion and the tears are real as the cast are saying goodbye to him forever. It gets me everytime. Even writing this has me crying!

That songs always touched me I never knew the story behind it though. Just watched it on YouTube 🥺 how sad and he’s got such a lovely face

properidiot · 15/03/2026 20:28

Dance with my father - Luther Vandross. Lost my Dad last year and my Mum many years ago. I don't get too emotional with films/music/books etc but this song just gets me every time.

Also, Supermarket Flowers by Ed Sheeran. I had cancer in 2019 and this song used to rip me apart when I thought of leaving my DCs behind and imagine this being played at my own funeral.

Thankfully I'm still here 💪

Jellytotsapplepie · 15/03/2026 20:29

Oleta Adam’s “get here”

The Jackson’s “got to be there”

Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence

Ahwig · 15/03/2026 20:31

Dance with my father again. Even more poignantly since my dad passed away.

Joan Armatrading “the weakness in me”

It originally came from Carousel, which is why it doesn't sound like a typical football song.

She used to be mine, by Sarah Barielles

It’s a wonderful song isn’t it?

Come back by Pearl Jam. It’s the lines :

And these days, they linger on
And in the night I've been waiting for
The real possibility that I may meet you in my dreams
I go to sleep

Joanne by Lady Gaga - written about the aunt she never knew who died young.

Waltz#2 (XO) by Elliot Smith

Mazzy Star Fade into you
