What song gets you every time

For me it’s Bryan Adams - “Heaven.” It has such a powerful tug on my heart and soul. It says something profound. It’s so intimate and musically simple but beautifully composed. It feels raw somehow.

I have always loved it, will always love it. Never get tired of listening to it and feel the same deep pulls of profound emotion when I hear it.

What song has this effect on you?

Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond, and High Hopes.

BiscoffCheesecakes · 15/03/2026 20:36

I heard Streets of Philadelphia today for the first time in ages & it really got to me

Also Slipping Through My Fingers, Jealous Guy & Against All Odds get me every time. I don't think I can actually listen to the first one, I find it too emotional

@TheGirlWhoLived , that was 'Tell Laura I Love Her'.

Yes it gets to you

Jellytotsapplepie · 15/03/2026 20:40

Both sides now Joni Mitchell

newrubylane · 15/03/2026 20:42

The Mother by Brandi Carlile.

There are lots of other songs that move me, but this is the one that makes me bawl above all others.

wayneismylife · 15/03/2026 20:42

James - Moving on.

Needhelp101 · 15/03/2026 20:42

Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah. I have never made it through a listen without crying.
Cat Stevens Father and Son. Reminds me of a really painful time in my life but also bittersweet because my much younger children and I used to sing it driving around when I was trying to hold myself together for them.

O Wow O Wow How Wonderful She Is, Nick Cave’s songs saw me through many heartbreaks during my twenties, but listening to this in my mid forties when the recording of Anita Lane’s voice kicks in just made me weep the first time I heard it. I think it’s when she says, “Do you remember, we used to really really have fun,” and it makes me think of all the times I’ll never have again.
Harvest Moon, Neil Young
Another vote for Landslide, Fleetwood Mac and Un Bel Di from Madama Butterfly
Goin’ Back, Dusty Springfield
The Carter Family, Carly Simon
Dreams, the Cranberries
Wish you were here, Pink Floyd
Winter Hill, the Doves
Silence, PJ Harvey

Joan Armatrading “the weakness in me”

Wow some lovely songs here. Flowers to all those who have lost those close to them.

@Jellytotsapplepie omg I had forgotten that song – it’s so wonderful and meant so much to me at a certain time. It’s amazing how music can fit into your memory grooves and take you back. Another song that does that for me is Smokey Robinson "Being with You" which catapults me back to first love aged 17.

One song that never fails to make me cry is Elvis’s "Always on my Mind" bluuuuub and I’m not even an Elvis fan. That song tho.

Also mentions for No More I Love Yous by Annie Lennox and Wish You Were Here yes by Pink Floyd. And a track from Born in the USA by Bruce, Bobby Jean. All of those remind me of old long-lost friends or lovers.

If This is Goodbye: Mark Knopfler and Emmie Lou Harries.
Based on the final messages to loved ones from 9/11 victims who knew they wouldn't make it 😔

bogginbluesticks · 15/03/2026 20:49

Ode to my family- The Cranberries.

The Wall- Tracey Chapman.

This is how it feels- Inspiral Carpets, perfectly sums up the loneliness of depression.

In dreams - Roy Orbison, was played at my grandad's funeral, 'in dreams I walk with you, in dreams I talk with you, only in dreams, in beautiful dreams'.

Crazy- Patsy Cline, my Granny's favourite song.

Flowers and Football tops- Glasvegas, a tribute to murdered teenager Kriss Donald, the bit at the end when he sings 'how could they take my sunshine away', brings the lump in the throat every time.

The Drugs Don't Work by The Verve. It's about Richard Ashcroft's father dying and in pain.

2468who · 15/03/2026 20:50

Everything I own by bread. Such a sad song.
Also the hymn Nearer my god to thee, even just the instrumental version, always really gets me for some reason.

DandyDenimScroller · 15/03/2026 20:53

I, the lord of sea and sky.
My dad was a devout Christian and local preacher. This hymn was one he chose for his funeral. I can no longer sing it without being a blubbering mess and have to leave the congregation as soon as I find out it's going to be sung.

moggerhanger · 15/03/2026 20:56

Wind Of Change by The Scorpions. At the time we truly believed that the world was changing permanently for the better. So now listening to it fills me with sadness.
