What do you use to make your house smell nice?

I hoover and clean regularly and have the windows open, so my house doesn’t smell bad. But it just doesn’t really smell like anything at all. I would love to add some fragrance but don’t know what’s best… do candles add much scent? Not a fan of plug ins. What do people use to keep your house smelling nice? room sprays? I don’t want to waste my money, I want something that lingers and doesn’t just fade after a few minutes, does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi OP (& all) - I'm a fragrance stylist, and consult on what scents work well in different spaces. It could be that you need to layer more, or have more than one in your room. I'll link a few below (at diff price points) that I find are very effective:
https://www.zarahome.com/gb/poetic-mind-reed-diffusers-l47445000676zhmk
https://kalmwellbeingscents.com/products/empower-diffuser-white-grapefruit-mandarin-eucalyptus-basil

You could also try putting in some extra reeds, and make sure they are well soaked before you turn them over.

Ambra

Ambra has a mysterious, sweet, and sensual personality. It will take you on a journey to discover the intense notes of amber, iris blossom, geranium, labdanum and patchouli, and finish with precious woods and Madagascar vanilla.

Small vase / pot, pack of reeds, an essential oil of your choosing, and perfumers alcohol.

Mix 3/4 to 2/3 perfumers alcohol with the essential oil, add to pot, stick about 4 reeds in.

Making your own is much more fun and less pricey than buying ready made diffuser refills. I also get migraines from artificial smells, but these make the house smell Devine, without the chemical artificial scent.

Where do you buy the alcohol from, please?

Oil diffuser.

I also have a wax melt burner but the oil burner is instant.

Avamayfair.com is where I buy the oils and wax melts. These are much better than anything else IMO

Now that is an incredible job. I have career envy!

Windows open over artificial fragrance!

Fresh flowers and fresh air in the warm months.

Do the Zara ones scent? I haven’t tried them before but I’m picky about diffusers!

Oh god, I didn’t realise. I thought everyone used this kind of stuff. I do cat sitting and almost every house I go into smells so nice. Like lemon or coconut or a spa. And I always think.. wow I wish my house smelt like this! But I’ve never bothered to buy anything because I always just think if I keep the house clean that will make it smell nice but it just doesn’t have a smell. Thanks for the heads up! 😁

i don’t mean to be one of them but fragrances do really set off my asthma, so much so that my throat will close up and makes me croaky. I do use natural oils though as they definitely don’t have the same effect as normal air fresheners, I wipe them on my radiators or dilute them and spray.

mamaduckbone · 14/03/2026 10:43

I don’t like any synthetic air fresheners but have a reed diffuser on the landing and another one in the sitting room. I also use scented candles and have an amazing room spray from Norfolk Natural Living which was a gift - I never would have bought it but it really does linger.

They’re a major cause of house fires. I have heavily fragranced everything in my house, but would never have a plug-in.

I had no idea about the fire hazard 😳

I've found they best - along with a vigorous vacuum and cleaning routine

Shoes232 · 14/03/2026 12:17

Neom diffusers

TattedBarley · 14/03/2026 12:55

I use zoflora to clean just about everything 🤣 i find the disinfectant version diluted in water the best

Wonderknicks · 14/03/2026 13:04

I use Valentte & find them a bit variable depending on the fragrance. I bought some of their fragrance oils that I put in my white company electric diffuser & they are nice but I only really use it before visitors come.
I also have a wax melter which is good. The next wax melts are lovely.

I find the Zara ones mixed tbh. I think the Poetic Mind diffuser very good, and the candle also has a good throw (ie the scent spreads even when not burning). I have a couple of others from Zara and they are good, but not quite as good as that one.

Decisions! I LOVE scent, currently have the Vieve diffuser by my bed which is amazing but it’s not in stock. The candle is gorgeous too

Thanks for this. I’m going to give it a go. Where do I buy the perfumer’s alcohol?

Got mine from Amazon

Puffalicious · 15/03/2026 14:34

Adding this one: M&S Calm range- brown glass packaging. I do love it & got a candle & room spray as part of Mother's Day- bless DS.
