What do you use to make your house smell nice?

I hoover and clean regularly and have the windows open, so my house doesn’t smell bad. But it just doesn’t really smell like anything at all. I would love to add some fragrance but don’t know what’s best… do candles add much scent? Not a fan of plug ins. What do people use to keep your house smelling nice? room sprays? I don’t want to waste my money, I want something that lingers and doesn’t just fade after a few minutes, does anyone have any suggestions?

Method multi surface cleaning spray. I wipe down all the surfaces and the scent lasts ages. I wash dog beds etc with Ecover fabric conditioner which lasts a while too.

They are incredibly bad for health. They disrupt the body in all sorts of ways and I would never have them near children or animals. Who wants to breathe that in?

I am on a pet group where people report their animals having neurological episodes because of air fresheners.

Yes they affect the nervous system

I’m use reed diffusers - white company Myrrh in the winter and Rituals Sakura in the summer. I’m still on myrrh for a few more weeks!

I use a fabric refresher spray from marks and spencer. It is absolutely lovely and not at all cloying like some of the fragrances you can buy.

Can you share what fragrance it is or the full name of it please?

BeMellowAquaSquid · 13/03/2026 21:38

My daughters each have a Neom diffuser in their rooms but through the whole house we have the pet safe plug ins. If you have pets do consider this our 6 year old dog had a couple of seizures and we later realised that the diffuser we were once using had oils in it that were invariably toxic to dogs.

Flannelfeet · 13/03/2026 21:38

I am a fragrance freak.. I have plug ins but Husband hates them so I only have them on when hes out. Have oil diffusers in the hall, livingroom and bathrooms, anymore and I think he would possibly put a pillow over my face when im sleeping 😆 🤣. Until recently I was half filling my kitchen sink with boiling water and about a 3rd of a bottle of zoflora every night just for the lovely smell, so good 🥰. my lovely mother in law bought me the spray bottle to dilute it, best bloody thing btw...1 3rd diluted to fill the bottle and then spray the bottom of the clean sink 🥰.

I spray furniture polish on the radiators.

I open the windows for ages in the morning every day, which I think makes a huge difference.

White Company diffusers - last ages, subtle fragrance. I use Nourish (but switch to a Wintery one Nov-Feb)

I’m also a White Company Oh my God fan .
Nourish looks nice. I recommend Portofino which I bought last year, great scent, lasted ages and the empty bottle with reeds in still scenting the downstairs loo. I was given Noir for Christmas, however not finding it as strong or nice.
Is there a winter one that you recommend?

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 13/03/2026 21:51

Wash with smol non bio, hang it up and leave utility room door open! If not washing then Inis diffuser…

Pollyanna123456 · 13/03/2026 21:55

I use wax melts which melt on a burner with a tea light - usually have about 20 hours burning time - they are having a bit of a revival at the moment and I really rate them!

Lovemycat2023 · 13/03/2026 22:05

I like the idea of diffusers but can’t smell a lot! Dried lavender heads are nice (and sometimes free) but fade after a while.

I find candles, even unlit ones, more effective. Plus sometimes use room sprays.

Oh god, I didn’t realise. I thought everyone used this kind of stuff. I do cat sitting and almost every house I go into smells so nice. Like lemon or coconut or a spa. And I always think.. wow I wish my house smelt like this! But I’ve never bothered to buy anything because I always just think if I keep the house clean that will make it smell nice but it just doesn’t have a smell. Thanks for the heads up! 😁

They don't recommend room fresheners when have cats either! We don't have them because of having a cat in the house, remember reading about it for pets.

And I bet your house smells nice, keeping it clean and a window open at times is all it needs imo. Bet smells miles better than ours!

Lovemycat2023 · 13/03/2026 22:07

(I have heard stuff about pets being affected too, and don’t use anything smelly where my cat sleeps)

FredaMountfitchet · 13/03/2026 22:33

Open windows ( when the house cat is safely out of escape route)
Aldi apothecary reed diffusers in rooms like dining room / second bathroom which aren’t used everyday
Essential oils bought cheaply on Amazon few drops added to some water spritzed in bins etc
Zoflora diluted as cleaning agent
White vinegar and soda bic down drains & sink overflows
Mainly open windows though .

echt · 13/03/2026 22:34

Doors and windows open as often and as long as possible. I have fly screens to keep the insects out. I have a dog so wash his blankets every week and hoover regularly. I mop floors and clean wooden shelves with Earth Choice wood surface cleaner, or the smell really, as timber floors can be cleaned with water and shelves with a damp cloth.

Am still very sad that Method cleaners aren't sold in Australia as I loved the pong of the almond floor cleaner. There was a class action challenging Method's claim to be natural and safe; apparently they are neither. Grin

ThatMellowSheep · 13/03/2026 22:42

plug ins affect my asthma. I like Noem diffusers in my hallway and in the main bathroom. People often comment on the lovely smell .

IReallyDontKnowClouds · 13/03/2026 22:52

NEOM reed diffusers are lovely!

Puffalicious · 13/03/2026 22:59

St Eval Bay & Rosemary candles. Divine & last ages.

DontKillSteve · 13/03/2026 23:14

I like a mix of candles, electric and reed diffusers. Plus open windows every day for a good air. I use Diptyque, Neom, White Company, True Grace.

I bought this today. It's so lovely. Not overpowering, but seems to last longer than normal air freshener.

I didn't mention it as I didn't want the hate! I know it's marmite, but I use Winter from about mid November until end Feb - it's quite Christmassy due to the cinnamon fragrance, but I'm ok with that!
