What do you use to make your house smell nice?

I hoover and clean regularly and have the windows open, so my house doesn’t smell bad. But it just doesn’t really smell like anything at all. I would love to add some fragrance but don’t know what’s best… do candles add much scent? Not a fan of plug ins. What do people use to keep your house smelling nice? room sprays? I don’t want to waste my money, I want something that lingers and doesn’t just fade after a few minutes, does anyone have any suggestions?

Sorry to anyone who hates scents but I’m a scent person
i like open windows and wash things regularly like throws, coats, scarves to make sure the place is neutral
rituals Reed diffusers in the barhrooms
northern soul scents room and linen sprays - I spray my bedding but down the foot end of my bed so it’s not overly strong and also use it as a bathroom spray
wax melts/candles if I’m at home
I clean with scented products like method rhubarb floor cleaner, fabulosa disinfectant in the plug holes etc

I think if you use loads of scent and never air the house and it’s also hot/heating on a lot then it gets overpowering but my home is aired at least twice a day

Oh and I have a cat so cleaning is when he is out the room, and I always have not scented spaces/windows open. My second cat and neither have been affected by anything I use, I’m careful with cleaning stuff where he walks etc

I have windows open if I’m at home during day. At night I have wax melts and Yankee candies which I alternate.
I also use carpet fresheners

I use candles, plug in air fresheners, pour Zoflora on the sink and put hot water in there. Put drop of scented oil in the hoover. Makes the house smell amazing!

SnowFrogJelly · 14/03/2026 01:21

What’s wrong with using fabric conditioner..

MsSmartShoes · 14/03/2026 01:24

i use candies and reed diffusers that use natural essential oils for scent.

Why don't you like plug ins? I swear by them

They’re a major cause of house fires. I have heavily fragranced everything in my house, but would never have a plug-in.

donotmissyourchancetoblow · 14/03/2026 02:15

Reed diffusers. I love them Think there’s one in almost every room on the house they’re all the same
smell though! Soul candles do great ones and the last really well.
I do air the house daily so they’re not to cover up any horrible smells!
I refuse to use candles after I had to repaint a livingroom thanks to soot on all the walls in ceiling. Candles are banned now

@TinseltraumaValentte Lemongrass & Rosemary is my favourite too 😊 So fresh!

FantasyFoodhall · 14/03/2026 04:35

I have an electric burner for wax melts. In The Hills do some lovely ones, or Northern Soul Scents.

Tonissister · 14/03/2026 04:58

I open the windows every morning. Wash the floors often with Method Almond or Johnson's soapy floor cleaner which just smells fresh.

I put drops of geranium and lavender essential oil on the radiators in summer and spicy wax melts in winter. And the same inside the hoover bag. Then whenever you hoover, there's a blast of geranium scent.

I do get asthma, headaches and nausea now from strong scents, so have to be very careful of artificial smells but anything based on essential oils seems fine.

How do you put wax melts on the radiator? Don’t they melt all over the radiator?

I use essential oils in a spray bottle with water, wax melts in a burner which are made from natural ingredients or an essential oil burner. I sometimes use scented candles in soy candles with non toxic ingredients.

FreddysFingers · 14/03/2026 06:15

I use plug in wax warmers and wax melts, they last for hours.

mellongoose · 14/03/2026 06:18

Fresh air, regular cleaning and the odd St Eval candle. Currently on Walled Garden. We have a Labrador and need the extra help sometimes 🤣

He and his bedding are washed every other week.

I rub a bit of the melt onto the top of the radiator every other day. As it heats up it releases the scent. It makes the melts last far longer and stops the smell being overpowering.

I did once put too much on and it dripped onto the carpet below. So now I sort of rub it along the top, at the back, like drawing a chalk line.

Reed diffusers work well.

For low cost options - home bargains ones are fab.

MarieClairedelune · 14/03/2026 06:33

I knocked a reed diffuser over and it ruined a waxed wood table .

ChocolateCinderToffee · 14/03/2026 06:38

I have a Fragonard reed diffuser (pistache cedre) downstairs and lavender pillow spray in my bedroom. Also air the whole house most days.

Pollyanna123456 · 13/03/2026 21:55

I use wax melts which melt on a burner with a tea light - usually have about 20 hours burning time - they are having a bit of a revival at the moment and I really rate them!

Yes I’ve gone back to wax melts, after a long time of spending a fortune on diffusers, and I’ve yet to find one that I like,
or works.
The only one that came close was a Neom one in the downstairs loo, I had some nice compliments, but too expensive. At least you get a big hit with the melts and the smell lingers.

landlordhell · 14/03/2026 06:44

I’m not a fan of air fresheners etc as I don’t often like the smells. I air the house and I have a huge bottle of Spanish cologne that I spray about sometimes. It’s a fresh citrus and lavender based smell but it’s light.

BeanQuisine · 14/03/2026 06:47

Garlic, bacon, coffee and fresh air.

Augustus40 · 14/03/2026 06:47

Nag Champa incense.

Charlize43 · 14/03/2026 06:49

Now is the right time of year to have pots of Hyacinths on tables. When they bloom they will fill your house with a glorious smell. I'm much more a fan of organic scents (oranges, cinnamon, flowers like dried lavender, prosecco, etc...

Some of these air fresheners and scented candles are full of toxic chemicals (VOCS) that have been know to cause a range of health issues from mild headaches to hormonal issues to cancer risks. I know it is unfashionable to point the out while everyone is choking on their Jo Malone and White Company candles...

True. I dislike hyacinth smell though.

DundeeNewcastle · 14/03/2026 06:59

Open windows and if I really want a blast of something different, I simmer lemons, oranges, herbs and spices. I'm put off by the grim health consequences of diffusers, melts, zoflora, etc. Many are shite for the environment too.
