What do you use to make your house smell nice?

I hoover and clean regularly and have the windows open, so my house doesn’t smell bad. But it just doesn’t really smell like anything at all. I would love to add some fragrance but don’t know what’s best… do candles add much scent? Not a fan of plug ins. What do people use to keep your house smelling nice? room sprays? I don’t want to waste my money, I want something that lingers and doesn’t just fade after a few minutes, does anyone have any suggestions?

I like the little air freshers that you click in or peel the back off. Tucked into a corner of most rooms.
Not overpowering but just there.

Be warned though....you will have a deluge of posters telling you you are:
1.Single handedly destroying the environment

  1. Setting off your neighbours asthma with your disgusting fake fragrances
  2. Setting off the postman's migraine with your disgusting fake fragrances
  3. Making anyone that walks within 50 feet of your home sick...with your disgusting fake fragrances.

Please, absolutely do not admit to using fabric conditioner on your clothing or this thread will become chaos 🤭

I use a fabric refresher spray from marks and spencer. It is absolutely lovely and not at all cloying like some of the fragrances you can buy.

Oh god, I didn’t realise. I thought everyone used this kind of stuff. I do cat sitting and almost every house I go into smells so nice. Like lemon or coconut or a spa. And I always think.. wow I wish my house smelt like this! But I’ve never bothered to buy anything because I always just think if I keep the house clean that will make it smell nice but it just doesn’t have a smell. Thanks for the heads up! 😁

I love white company diffusers. I’ve tried a few (admittedly not all) but find they last and really fill a room but don’t give me a headache.

Plump82 · 13/03/2026 13:29

I use room sprays from Gruum. They are gorgeous! As are they matching candles.

Do you spray this onto your cushions and things like that?

I sprinkle a few drops of eucalyptus or sweet orange essential oil on a tissue and put on top of the radiator, once I have cleaned and had the windows open for fresh air. It doesn't last more than a couple of hours. That said, I really don't like a strong artificial scent. Don't use fabric softener. It doesn't smell fresh to me. Each to their own. 🤷‍♀️

Yes, curtains, sofa, cushions etc. It really is lovely.

Meadowfinch · 13/03/2026 13:34

Open the windows (we live rurally).

In the winter, baking or lavender furniture polish.

In summer, cut roses from the garden or other flowers.

HostaCentral · 13/03/2026 13:39

Sorry. I am also just a fresh air girl. I don't like strong fragrances either. I even have to move flowers into the garage if they get too strong. Daffs and lillies and the pink spikes that seem to be in all bouquets, particularly give me the ick.

I do have an occasional White Co diffuser, but even then I only like two of their scents.

I do use furniture polish, I don't use fabric sprays or fabric conditioner.

Fabric sprays are full of noxious chemicals.....

Your house probably smells fine. Maybe you have become “nose blind”?

Kelim · 13/03/2026 13:41

Oh one thing to realise though is that you cannot really smell your own house. You will always be much more alive to scents in other people's houses because of olfactory fatigue. This is also why people don't know their houses smell of dogs.

I find anything pomegranate fragranced gives a nice rich, homely smell.

M&S pomegranate diffuser liquid is absolutely shit though so don't waste your money.

TomatoSandwiches · 13/03/2026 13:45

The windows are open every morning, if I have lemon water or lemon in my tea I pop the leftover slice or rind in a milk pan with a cinnamon stick and simmer it whilst I drink and then turn it off, lasts all day.

Tinseltrauma · 13/03/2026 13:50

I like to have the windows open even for a short while every day but I also like a nice reed diffuser. I’ve tried many but the best I’ve found has been Valentine. Some lovely scents and I’m still working my way through them but the favourite so far is lemongrass and rosemary.

I agree, I love these products. My fave is Lemongrass and Rosemary.

Shmee1988 · 13/03/2026 14:08

Ready to get flamed, but here goes. I put a little bit of fabric softener on the top of my radiators with a clean cloth and turn the heating on. People always comment on how nice my house smells. (Sorry everyone) 🙄

MrsMAFs · 13/03/2026 14:13

Mop with Spanish Cleaning floor cleaner, the Asevi ones are very fragrant. I also pop a hoover fragrance disc in my hoover. I was gifted a Valentte diffuser and the smell was very strong, strong enough that people would comment when popping round.

WongKarWai · 13/03/2026 14:36

Open windows and a couple of aromatherapy diffusers with a few drops of essential oil in. Just make sure you choose pet-safe ones if you have animals. Although that's true of any kind of scented product, really.

OrdinaryMagicOfAcorns · 13/03/2026 19:23

Oil burner. I have a few perfume or essential oils that I’ve picked up and just blend to suit.

I think if you want stuff that lasts for more than a couple hours you’re looking at either chemicals, or maybe old fashioned pot pourri would do it? Something that can sit there all the time? I’ve not seen pot pourri for ages I’ll have to try and mix some now. It would probably work best in small spaces.

I’ve just bought from them. Tonight my house smells amazing! The diffusers actually seem to work. I also clean with Purdy and Figg. With 2 cats and a dog I get paranoid! I definitely open the windows and doors as much as I can too and wash the throws and cushions every week.

ThePieceHall · 13/03/2026 19:35

Can I just check, these threads always attract a billion posters raving about Vallente products. Is it a MLM? I am not in any pyramid scheme and I have no axe to grind. I have tried a Valentte product - a candle - and it was absolutely crap. It tunnelled atrociously and the scent throw was piss-poor.

melissasummerfield · 13/03/2026 19:41

I have two abel burners, pricey but they look great and their oil blends are lovely - spa like fragrances.

Me too! The fragrance is lovely.
