What do you use to make your house smell nice?

I hoover and clean regularly and have the windows open, so my house doesn’t smell bad. But it just doesn’t really smell like anything at all. I would love to add some fragrance but don’t know what’s best… do candles add much scent? Not a fan of plug ins. What do people use to keep your house smelling nice? room sprays? I don’t want to waste my money, I want something that lingers and doesn’t just fade after a few minutes, does anyone have any suggestions?

Why don't you like plug ins? I swear by them

Can I just check, these threads always attract a billion posters raving about Vallente products. Is it a MLM? I am not in any pyramid scheme and I have no axe to grind. I have tried a Valentte product - a candle - and it was absolutely crap. It tunnelled atrociously and the scent throw was piss-poor.

Yes I agree. I bought a set and they have been distinctive in their lack of smell. Anything from Sainsbury Habitat range is good as is White Company peony.

I like the little air freshers that you click in or peel the back off. Tucked into a corner of most rooms.
Not overpowering but just there.

Be warned though....you will have a deluge of posters telling you you are:
1.Single handedly destroying the environment

  1. Setting off your neighbours asthma with your disgusting fake fragrances
  2. Setting off the postman's migraine with your disgusting fake fragrances
  3. Making anyone that walks within 50 feet of your home sick...with your disgusting fake fragrances.

Please, absolutely do not admit to using fabric conditioner on your clothing or this thread will become chaos 🤭

I’ll take the bait.

Air fresheners release volatile organic compounds, such as formaldehyde, into the air, or in other words tbey produce indoor air pollution. Many other normal everyday household items, such as toiletries, candles and cleaning products or new furnishings also release volatile organic compounds. For this reason, I avoid air fresheners and candles. I can manage without them.

Glad it’s just not me. I’m happy to be the counter to the Valentte BS. I personally love candles. But only natural wax ones. I like NEOM, True Grace and Urban Apothecary. I also have very many NEOM diffusers, rechargeable and water-based. You can buy NEOM oils for about £10 a pop at TK Maxx as opposed to £30. I live in an open-plan mill so I’m always conscious of cooking and living smells. I constantly have candles and diffusers on the go. Oh, and fresh flowers. And I air my house thoroughly, in all weathers.

Small vase / pot, pack of reeds, an essential oil of your choosing, and perfumers alcohol.

Mix 3/4 to 2/3 perfumers alcohol with the essential oil, add to pot, stick about 4 reeds in.

Making your own is much more fun and less pricey than buying ready made diffuser refills. I also get migraines from artificial smells, but these make the house smell Devine, without the chemical artificial scent.

Thanks for this. I’m going to give it a go. Where do I buy the perfumer’s alcohol?

Another vote for fresh air. Absence of smell would be my ideal every time.

No they're definitely not MLM. A British company, products made in Cheshire. The Reed diffusers are fantastic. As is the room spray. I have a candle from a gift set. Haven't tried it yet. Would be disappointed if it wasn't good as their other products are great.

Rictasmorticia · 13/03/2026 20:18

Aran Sense of Scotland do some amazing diffusers. Mine last about 10 months.. They are all natural ingredients. My favourite is After the Rain

Hmmmmm you don't have my 19 year old weed smoking nephew living with you.

You would soon adopt all things scented!

The two I tried as part of an introductory offer were good, though dissolved quickly. However the other diffusers I tried were rubbish with no scent throw.
Valentte marketing granted is good, the products not so much, and anyone searching for them will likely be targeted ad infinitem on social media with their ads.

I have a 2 sense aroma oil diffusers and they makes the house smell amazing! I also use various room and fabric sprays, nice smelling zeflora etc

It’s just that these posts attract a disproportionate number of Valentte fans, when it’s just a remarkably niche brand, and that one or two of us here are reporting that the products are poor quality. I care not but I really would not want anyone else to waste their money. On the basis of my personal experience, and I love essential oils, diffusers and natural wax candles, I absolutely would not recommend Valentte.

I use electronic diffusers with white company oils. They have a lovely burst of fragrance

Essential oils sprinkled on the vacuum bag.

Sorry. I am also just a fresh air girl. I don't like strong fragrances either. I even have to move flowers into the garage if they get too strong. Daffs and lillies and the pink spikes that seem to be in all bouquets, particularly give me the ick.

I do have an occasional White Co diffuser, but even then I only like two of their scents.

I do use furniture polish, I don't use fabric sprays or fabric conditioner.

Fabric sprays are full of noxious chemicals.....

Agree. Commercial fragrances are unnecessary - and generally smell disgusting.

fivefoottwowitheyesofblue · 13/03/2026 21:10

I open the windows for ages in the morning every day, which I think makes a huge difference.

White Company diffusers - last ages, subtle fragrance. I use Nourish (but switch to a Wintery one Nov-Feb)

Open windows every day and clean with this. Now I have the kit, I just order the refills. No harsh chemicals and beautiful smell.

They are incredibly bad for health. They disrupt the body in all sorts of ways and I would never have them near children or animals. Who wants to breathe that in?
