DD7yo is begging to have her ears pierced tonight (school night) is it a bad idea?

So, DD has been begging to have her ears done - fine by me, explained it hurts, taking care of them ect ect.
I suggested waiting until summer holidays due to PE ect.. but DD said the girls in her class don’t take their earrings out for PE and don’t tape them ect. I checked with those parents and the school and they are allowed to wear a small stud during PE. So DD wants it done asap.

Its a non uniform day tomorrow and DD is now begging relentlessly to have her ears done when she gets home tonight so she can show them to her friends with her non-uniform 😂

I don’t know if I’m overthinking it, is it a good idea to send her off to school with fresh piercings? Should we wait until the weekend, or do you think she’ll be ok if she did have them done tonight? She knows she can’t fiddle with them ect. They don’t have PE tomorrow anyway ect. But I’m so undecided.

Hope she enjoys her piercings OP. Waiting until tonight/weekend is probably better, just incase she has a broken nights sleep if they are a bit sore to lie on (can take some getting used to at first).

Of course they can. I just think it’s worth pointing out the increased risk with guns as people are often not aware of it so then they can make an informed decision 🤷🏻‍♀️

There’s no downside to needle piercing in comparison to gun piercing if someone wants to get their child’s ears pierced. I don’t know why anyone would choose the method that is more likely to cause pain and infection but each to their own and better they’re fully informed.

A friend that’s a piercer coming to your house to do it raises huge concerns actually, so there is risk here.

I can’t think of any piercers I know personally that would come to the house to do a child’s ears, they would say to bring the child to them, in the workplace where they had access to everything they needed.

The piercing premises need to be registered so perhaps is not even legal, Im not quite sure on the specifics

I just think that its hugely exaggerated the difference between a gun and a needle. They both bloody hurt, Ive had both in several places. They both can get infected and they can both be wonky. My needle piercing in one of my ears is wonky, bloody impossilbe to get things in and out.

I dont hear all this angst in real life when people are talking about their kids ears or whatever. Its jus where is more convenient, where has appointments, easy parking etc.

I missed that. Yep, the piercer coming to your house instead of you going to their studio is questionable.

  • cleanliness. The area you get pierced in should ge sterile eg properly washed/wiped down. Lying on the sofa is not akin to lying on a proper wipe able table.
  • hygiene. Presumably you wont be getting it done in the bathroom/kitchen so the piercer would have to wash their hands and then walk through rooms
  • how can they keep the equipment clean travelling?
  • equipment - what if they realise half way through they dont have sonething?
  • insurance.
  • ethics. I'd question the judgement of someone willing to pierce in random places.
OnTheBoardwalk · 13/03/2026 10:15

The, well respected, tattoo parlour in my town will pierce ears from age 8 and ‘the child needs to have grown enough ears’ so I don’t think her age is a major issue. I would be more bothered about her changing her mind after they’d been done

i also think it’s strange your friend will pierce her ears at your home rather than asking her to come into the parlour

if you let her have them pierced just be wary of allergies. I suffered for years and hated my piercings due to allergies I didn’t know about and stopped wearing them. Many years later I had them re pierced with titanium and love them now

TeaSqueezingpos · 12/03/2026 21:20

I believe we can get flat-backs that screw into the earring. I need to check that though so thanks for the reminder!

Yes, I'm looking into it at the moment as my 6 yo is interested in getting hers done. Titanium is the best apparently and you can get flatbacks that screw on.

It seems like a bonus is that you'll repel snobs and other people who make bizarre class judgements based on a child who wants to wear earrings.

My 5 yo has some clip-ons she doesn't wear that often but I think I'm going to encourage her to wear them more as it seems to be a great filtering system.

I think you’re over thinking this. It’s not open heart surgery. How dirty do you think the OPs house is?!!!

😂

And why do you think piercing premises are inspected and subject to environmental health regulations?

I dont know about you but I wouldn't want to get a hole put in me in an environment with say pet hair or dust.

Homes aren't designed to be sterile. A piercing environment should ge as far as possible.

Well it wont be!!

People are walking in with their coats and hair and bits of fluff and cat hair all over their clothes. No different

I think this is being really overegged.

When I got my ears re pierced a few years ago the guy who did it was a customer in the pub I was in. The piercing was fine 😅. There is nothing sterile about Claire’s, jewllers or hairdressers that do ears of thousands each year. You’re really over worrying about this

Alana’s on a post like this there is a poster who knows not just one but multiple niche professionals they know well enough to know what they might do in a certain situation. 😆 How many piercers do you know well? Plenty folk will do for a pal what they might not do professionally in all kind of trades

likelysuspect · 13/03/2026 17:35

What is a group of peircers called anyway

A gaggle? A herd? A needle of piercers?

@rainbowsandraspberrygin Pierced ears at 7? No one my dc went to school with did this. Just not that type of parent. It’s something I rarely see these days and it’s not a look my DDs would have wanted. It’s just not our world.

What exactly is ‘that type of parent’? 🤨

rainforestalliance · 13/03/2026 17:51

TeaSqueezingpos · 13/03/2026 07:39

Yeah, years of clip ons. She started wearing them around about the same time she started smoking meth.

🤣

OhDear111 · 13/03/2026 07:48

@Missey85 That suits me. We know our place. How anyone thinks primary age dc with ears pierced is acceptable is beyond me, Don’t tend to see it at prep schools.

Maybe OPs child is part of the 99% of children who go to a normal school 🤷‍♀️

KnackeredInNeedOfADrink · 13/03/2026 18:13

Where we live, I had a problem getting my DD’s ears pierced as no reputable piercing place would do them under 9yrs!!

Glasgowgal200 · 13/03/2026 18:16

Wait till weekend or Easter hols

WimbyAce · 13/03/2026 18:22

Pretty sure I had a gun and no problems whatsoever. Was about 35 years ago though!

BlueRedCat · 13/03/2026 18:26

throwawayimplantchat · 13/03/2026 08:10

It’s good you felt you had a positive experience but please don’t encourage people to have their ears pierced with guns, let alone have their kids ears done that way. It’s really rough on the ear. The blunt stud is forced through the tissue which can cause more pain, swelling and trauma especially in kids’ ears which are more delicate. Crucially guns also can’t be fully sterilised which means infection is more likely.

Fair enough but I had my ears done with guns and never had any issues in 40 years and neither of us have had any issues since our last piercing. Quick and pain free and worked for us.

Vartden · 13/03/2026 18:40

A child in my class knocked a newly pierced ear in PE . It was covered with tape which we insisted on. The injury to it was horrible and caused problems for weeks.

From an ex primary tutor, I can say it's probably not wise. The actually best time to do it is the last week before summer holidays or first day or so of holidays. It then gives the piercing 6 weeks to heal before going back to school.
Most schools have a non jewellery policy for PE and children must be able to remove and put back in their own jewellery.

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 13/03/2026 18:57

IMHO.

7 is far to young to have a child's ears
pierced.

Well I work in the industry, even if not a piercer myself, so I do know plenty.

My point is rather that when it comes to sterile equipment and a highly regulated profession it would be really silly for a friend to come to your house and do it. The risk of infection multiplies, not to mention the risk the friend would be making to their entire career if they were to lose their license. Absolutely mad that anyone would do it, rather then simply say ‘sure, bring her in at X time’

This isn’t the same as a hairdresser coming to cut your hair at home.

I wouldnt worry about it. According to posters on here apparently querying the hygiene of having someone making a hole in you at any old random location is over egging the importance of cleanliness. 🤣

Retired65 · 13/03/2026 19:32

My answer, would be no. I wouldn't let my daughter have her ears pierced. Eventually she had them pierced when she was 25! At the last primary school I worked at, no earrings were allowed, for safety reasons.
