DD7yo is begging to have her ears pierced tonight (school night) is it a bad idea?

So, DD has been begging to have her ears done - fine by me, explained it hurts, taking care of them ect ect.
I suggested waiting until summer holidays due to PE ect.. but DD said the girls in her class don’t take their earrings out for PE and don’t tape them ect. I checked with those parents and the school and they are allowed to wear a small stud during PE. So DD wants it done asap.

Its a non uniform day tomorrow and DD is now begging relentlessly to have her ears done when she gets home tonight so she can show them to her friends with her non-uniform 😂

I don’t know if I’m overthinking it, is it a good idea to send her off to school with fresh piercings? Should we wait until the weekend, or do you think she’ll be ok if she did have them done tonight? She knows she can’t fiddle with them ect. They don’t have PE tomorrow anyway ect. But I’m so undecided.

@SherbetDipDap but then that is your responsibility if your DC rip their ears.

Lavender1974 · 12/03/2026 16:47

Oh go for it and make her happy.

I think 7 is a little young, 9-10 is better as they are more responsible about aftercare etc.

Sassylovesbooks · 12/03/2026 16:52

If your friend is a fully qualified piercer then she/he should be able to answer your questions. I'm not sure going into swimming pools is recommended for new piercings. Therefore, I would wait until you come back off holiday.

Guns can't be put through an autoclave, so there is a danger of infection. Cleaning with wipes won't get rid of all the pathogens, especially blood borne. Also it's blunt force and can give tissue damage.

Unpaidviewer · 12/03/2026 17:11

I'd let her get it done. I don't really understand why so many PPs think its a bad idea.

Hellohelga · 12/03/2026 17:13

Set an age and time of the school year that feels sensible and fair, and that you are happy with, then stick to it. Nagging and moaning shouldn’t get her anywhere. It’s not about denying her nice things, it’s about parenting. Read the posts from parent who have lost control of their teenagers.

Sorry I think I’ve made my post sound like I want her to wait and I’m giving in. That’s not the case. I was saying to DD that she won’t be allowed them for PE so will need to be in summer hold. She the explained and I clarified with the school and I said she could have it done ‘whenever’ then and asked friend, who said just let her know and she’ll pop over with some kit to do it. So DD knows she can have it done when she’s ready, literally.. my questioning is whether a school night is a bad idea.

Yes....a school night best avoided. Children will be lively and excited tomorrow if non-uniform day. Don't give the teacher even more work if your daughter fiddles with the studs or finds the piercing painful. Just get it done in your own time over the weekend or school holidays.

EverythingElseIsTaken · 12/03/2026 17:18

I’m shocked that the school allow PE with earrings in! I was volunteering at a holiday club when a girl who had put tape over her studs got one pulled right through when it got caught during an activity - it was awful.

No school I’ve worked has allowed earrings during PE even taped. Personally I preferred my DDs primary & secondary schools where no earrings were allowed full stop!

So, in answer to OPs question don’t think it’s a good idea right now. Have them done after school on the last day of the year in July (assuming England) and they should be okay to remove for school and activities in September.

Its very similar to sending your child up chimneys or down the mines.

fluffiphlox · 12/03/2026 17:21

It’s a terrible idea. Wait until she’s at least in double figures.

WildLeader · 12/03/2026 17:24

Call your friend @TeaSqueezingpos

ask them if it’s a good idea, if you’re going away at Easter it would be better to have them pierced now/soon so that they’re more healed by the holiday.

thestudio · 12/03/2026 17:24

psst op promise im not a cunt but it's eTc, not ect. Just saying because you use it a lot and if you're anything like me you won't want others to notice the mis-spelling

BunnyFrock · 12/03/2026 17:28

I must be a monster mother, I didn't allow my dds to have their ears pierced at all. Must admit they only asked once and I said they could when they were older.
It was never mentioned again and they still don't have pierced ears in their 30s

Maddy70 · 12/03/2026 17:29

Check with school first

nocoolnamesleft · 12/03/2026 17:29

Sounds like they won’t be sufficiently healed for your planned Easter holiday activities, so better to wait until after that.

My 7yr old is also desperate to get hers done. She keeps asking if it's sore, i tell her yes it is initially but not for long. She is still too scared 🤣. She also loves swimming weekly, so she'll probably be a teen before its done.

Up until about 3 months ago DD was dead against it, really terrified of the thought even after watching videos out of curiosity. Then we went out for her birthday and she wanted to wear a pair of clip ons, by the time we got to the place she said they were hurting but she didn’t want to take them off as they were pretty.. she got quite upset at the whole thing about wanting to wear the earrings but then hurting her ears so she also wanted to take them off. It was then she started questioning it again, she asked to see me take mine in and out, watched more videos.. she even had a go at popping mine in and out of my ears 😆 from then she’s been asking to have her done all the time🫣

The guns can't be sterilised properly.
Piercing guns cause trauma. They create the hole by pushing a blunt stud through skin to tear a hole.
Piercing needles are hollow so remove skin to make a hole which causes less trauma and makes healing cleaner.
Guns can be inaccurate.

Claires training used to be (I dont know if it still is) pretty poor.
They also pierce babies which is a questionable practice in my eyes for many reasons but predominantly consent, cleaning and ears grow so piercings can move.

😂not weird!
Definitely etc - contraction of etcetera.

Similar aged daughter. She's having hers done in the summer between primary and secondary school. I had mine done when I was 3 so really not bothered but DH is quite anti and this is the compromise. I definitely wouldn't get them done until a decent chunk of holiday just to make sure there's space to deal with any minor complications.

valentinka31 · 12/03/2026 17:42

She's 7. Her begging would not come into my decision because she is 7 years old. She's in zero position to decide.

Nocameltoeleggingsplease · 12/03/2026 17:43

Let her.
I made DD wait til she was about 15. She is now 21 and now has 3 in one ear, 2 in another plus helix etc, nose done and a number of tattoos and looks amazing. All done at the tattoo artist / piercing place I originally took her to. Don’t know what I was worried about (a slippery slope?!?! Gateway piercings?!?!!!). I’ll never forget her face when I said yes; she still asks for permission now bless her.

Nocameltoeleggingsplease · 12/03/2026 17:43

Meant to add; I’d let her have them done tonight.
