DD7yo is begging to have her ears pierced tonight (school night) is it a bad idea?

So, DD has been begging to have her ears done - fine by me, explained it hurts, taking care of them ect ect.
I suggested waiting until summer holidays due to PE ect.. but DD said the girls in her class don’t take their earrings out for PE and don’t tape them ect. I checked with those parents and the school and they are allowed to wear a small stud during PE. So DD wants it done asap.

Its a non uniform day tomorrow and DD is now begging relentlessly to have her ears done when she gets home tonight so she can show them to her friends with her non-uniform 😂

I don’t know if I’m overthinking it, is it a good idea to send her off to school with fresh piercings? Should we wait until the weekend, or do you think she’ll be ok if she did have them done tonight? She knows she can’t fiddle with them ect. They don’t have PE tomorrow anyway ect. But I’m so undecided.

Yes I believe so. They are shutting down soon in the UK. I just can’t get worked up about it.

My daughter had her ears pierced with a needle and one of them isn’t straight. So putting an earring in and out is problematic.

We’re going away over Easter holidays so unlikely to have it done then as we’ll be in pools, on rides ect. We can wait until the weekend I just wanted to know if there was any negative reason why she should wait until after school tomorrow, she’s excited after a few years of wearing clip ons that end up making her ears red and sore.

I’m perfectly capable of parenting and saying no.. but if there was no reason not to then why would I say no to something she wants and can be done? If it makes me her happy then I’m all for it.. but obviously not if it’s at more risk of infection ect.

If you ask people on MN if you should let your child get their ears pierced, they will always say ‘no’ whatever the circumstances or ‘wait’. It’s ridiculous.

It’s fine. I get so sick of people’s self-righteous indignation of having ears pierced at Claire’s.

Only in the UK are people so ridiculously snooty about it.

Ok, a needle piercing might be better generally. But it’s not going to be the end of the world if your child has their ears pierced at Claire’s.

Claire’s specifically is a really terrible place to have it done though. They get minimal training and get on with it.

Tiswa · 12/03/2026 14:26

The school don’t make them take them out at 7? Even though the rule is due to genuine risk?

taking care of pierced ears to avoid infection in the first 6/8 weeks is tough and at the moment she isn’t showing the maturity to do so (and mine pierced hers at 8 in the school holidays)

NoYourNameChanged · 12/03/2026 14:26

Personally I wouldn’t, although not because of school but because it’s only two weeks til you go away and will be in pools etc. That’s just asking for trouble imo, especially with a youngster who will be less aware of care etc.

Thisismyusername1 · 12/03/2026 14:26

My daughter had hers done in feb half term at a piercing place who use needles they have walk in appointments. It was much better because she has the flat back studs so I needed to sign that I was happy for her to wear them in pe and the school were ok with this. Personally I wanted them done in half term so I could keep an eye on cleaning etc for the first week at home in case of complications. The front of one of the studs came off but the piercing place replaced it straight away. Just seen your update about swimming at Easter I’m pretty sure we were told she couldn’t swim for at least six weeks so that may be an issue.

Jiddles · 12/03/2026 14:26

If you said she should wait until the holidays, she should wait until the holidays. If you give in now, you’re just teaching her that all she has to do to get her own way is to nag for long enough.
Plus however professionally the job is done, her ears will be sore and there’s always the danger of them getting accidentally knocked at school. It won’t kill her to wait a bit, in fact it’s good for her.

The risk of infection etc is high - you are literally creating a hole and forcing a foreign object in - it needs to be done by those with proper training (which to be fair the OP has) not a Saturday staff member with a gun

There is no such thing as ‘minimal training’. You’re either trained or you’re not. And they use the same methods as a jeweller.

Goodness, you are argumentative. I said ‘I believe so’. They definitely have Claire’s in the US.

I’d wait until after your holiday. I had my ears pierced over a year ago and went on some rides a few months ago and they kept getting knocked and it really hurt.

Lobe piercings take 6-8wks to superficially heal, which won’t be done by Easter. It can be really uncomfortable or get infected and would really ruin the holiday.

I’d be surprised if her school allowed her to attend with earrings in. DT’s school up to age 18 was no earrings in during the school day or evening and weekend sports events.

I expect you also think it’s ridiculous that I disapprove of a child of seven having been wearing clip-on earrings "for a few years" (and not just for occasional dressing-up, but regularly and for long enough for her ears to become red and sore)…

TigTails · 12/03/2026 14:31

Tell her no and make her wait until summer (2030). 😂

Lomonald · 12/03/2026 14:31

I would wait till a holiday she is at risk of catching her earrings on something or other kids maybe poking at them so they can see them,at least if it is a holiday gives them a chance to heal. I personally wouldn't give in to demands.

Sorry I think I’ve made my post sound like I want her to wait and I’m giving in. That’s not the case. I was saying to DD that she won’t be allowed them for PE so will need to be in summer hold. She the explained and I clarified with the school and I said she could have it done ‘whenever’ then and asked friend, who said just let her know and she’ll pop over with some kit to do it. So DD knows she can have it done when she’s ready, literally.. my questioning is whether a school night is a bad idea.

DD’s first 2 lots were done at Claire’s and there were no issues at all, she was 6 when she had the first ones done.
All subsequent ones have been done with needles because of the cartilage. I had one done with a gun 30+ years ago and it did damage the cartilage.

They've been having their workers watch a video and practice on a stuffed bear for decades. It's not really comprehensive training.

There's a ton of reasons why piercing with a gun is a bad idea. The gun can't be autoclaved. It's not sanitary. The risk of infection/scaring is much higher.

If you're going to do it get it done properly with a needle at a piercing studio.

Missey85 · 12/03/2026 14:34

I got mine pierced when I was three and had no problems 😊 just make sure they use a needle theirs more chance of infection if they use the gun ❤️

Oblivionnnnn · 12/03/2026 14:34

MN is hilarious when it comes to ear piercing.

Sure go for it, why not? It’s exciting for her!

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/03/2026 14:35

Doubt you will find one. Ours was a 6w wait !!

I did first day of summer holidays so had a chance to heal and she could look after them as need to clean and twist daily for 8w
