So, DD has been begging to have her ears done - fine by me, explained it hurts, taking care of them ect ect.
I suggested waiting until summer holidays due to PE ect.. but DD said the girls in her class don’t take their earrings out for PE and don’t tape them ect. I checked with those parents and the school and they are allowed to wear a small stud during PE. So DD wants it done asap.

Its a non uniform day tomorrow and DD is now begging relentlessly to have her ears done when she gets home tonight so she can show them to her friends with her non-uniform 😂

I don’t know if I’m overthinking it, is it a good idea to send her off to school with fresh piercings? Should we wait until the weekend, or do you think she’ll be ok if she did have them done tonight? She knows she can’t fiddle with them ect. They don’t have PE tomorrow anyway ect. But I’m so undecided.

Up until about 3 months ago DD was dead against it, really terrified of the thought even after watching videos out of curiosity. Then we went out for her birthday and she wanted to wear a pair of clip ons, by the time we got to the place she said they were hurting but she didn’t want to take them off as they were pretty.. she got quite upset at the whole thing about wanting to wear the earrings but then hurting her ears so she also wanted to take them off. It was then she started questioning it again, she asked to see me take mine in and out, watched more videos.. she even had a go at popping mine in and out of my ears 😆 from then she’s been asking to have her done all the time🫣

3 months isn't very long if she's been going back and forth.

My 2 local piercers are well established and respected piercers and they only do walk ins.

What is the school policy?

@TeaSqueezingpos what have you decided?

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with doing it on a school night.

I would ask your friend what she’d advise about swimming though, as I think that’s going to be the clincher.

My DD was about 7 and a half when she had hers done, or maybe 8 and a half. It was October half term, had them done by a beautician with a gun, went swimming after about 2 weeks, had no problems. We were meticulous about keeping them clean though.

The other thing is, try and make sure you can get the earrings that have safety backs, so they can’t be pushed too far into the hole. I know of a few of DD’s friends who had the standard butterfly backs / changed the original studs too early, and they had real problems with infections, wounds, having to dig them out of the ear etc.

Anyway, when your DD does get them, and is all healed up, she’ll be thrilled, and she’ll have a lot of fun choosing different pairs. Even if they’re from Claire’s 😂 ((their stirling / sterling (?) silver stuff is actually really good to be fair)) 🚨🚨 could the grammar police (affectionate) please confirm correct spelling of sterling in this context, and whether or not I’ve been profligate with the brackets? 🚨🚨

DD is happily playing with her brother right now so I’ve not mentioned it. I think we’ll do them tomorrow after school so she’s got the weekend. She’ll be in the pool but she doesn’t put her head under at all as she’s too scared so if they do get splashed we’ll just rinse them with saline after

she should avoid pools etc for first 6-8 weeks, so if you have plans for this over Easter, getting them done now is a no

TheRealLillyAllenVerifiedAccount · 12/03/2026 18:01

We always said not in primary school because primary school kids aren't known for their well thought out decisions. I know it's not a face tattoo but it can still scar and if it moves as they grow, can affect future piercings.

My daughter went back and forth and it wasn't until she consistently wanted them that she had them done. She was 15 and loves them! She is planning her seconds in a couple of weeks. They are allowed in school.

It was a surprising nice mum/daughter bonding thing.

It'll be fine OP!
Just get it done and explain that she will have to take care of them carefully thats all!

Regarding the clips making her ears sore, are you sure she's not allergic to nickel? It gets put in a LOT of costume jewellery, although it's a very common allergy. I can wear clips for an evening before they get sore, but if they have nickel in, my skin goes sore and red within ten minutes. If you do get her ears pierced, I'd make sure she's very careful about the earrings she wears.

AgnesMcDoo · 12/03/2026 18:24

She’s too young. Wait a few years.

OhDear111 · 12/03/2026 18:58

Age 7!!! Just no. 13. Or older. Do it in the summer holidays.

TeaSqueezingpos · 12/03/2026 14:14

My friend is a tattoo artist and piercer, they said they will just come round and do it for her. (Using a needle obviously)

haven’t read many replies so far but saw some questions about getting an appointment - we don’t need one 😆

Is your friend insured to pierce children's ears? Reason I ask is , if your daughters ears get infected and you need to go to A&E or GP for antibiotics, you might get asked who carried out the procedure. Are you happy to answer that question honestly?

Dont be daft. People, including kids get their ears pierced all the time. With a parents consent its legal.

You think a GP is going to be bothered about where a child got a perfectly legitimate piercing from?

They'll just give out some antibiotics, if even needed, that isnt that common to get an infection

OhDear111 · 12/03/2026 19:10

This is probably a family I would avoid.

I agree. I have been involved in children's clubs and I have lost count of the times girls have told me about infected ear piercings. Its always the younger kids with less educated parents......

Agreed. First it’s the earlobes and then it’s face tattoos and joining a cartel. It’s a very slippery slope.

xanthomelana · 12/03/2026 19:21

OP this is not the place to ask anything about piercings or tattoos, as you can tell MN hates them and thinks they are common. You know your child and know if she will look after them so make your own call.

Check with your friend if you are going away for Easter. When DD got her ears pierced the advice was no swimming for at least a month afterwards, preferably 6 weeks

Not unless you can find a proper piercer who has an appointment available. Not Claire’s.

i think Claire’s is shut now but I took my daughter to Claire’s, they used the gun and we had a very positive experience. we had planned to go somewhere with the needle but we didn’t realise we had to bring a passport for her and so they refused us. We ended up just walking along the street and into Claire’s and thought well, let’s give it a go. it went so well for her I even had a second one done in my ears on the same day. Didn’t hurt a bit on any of them and healed quickly. The needle honestly gives me the creeps!

Go for it then. It will make your daughter happy.

Flashbacks for me lol.. our daughter bugged me from around 7..begged and promised the world in chores lol. I told her no. Not until she was 14 as I needed her to take care of them properly. She huffed and hissed. She got them when she was 14 and did not turn them or clean them properly at first..got a really red ear lobe. She got much better at it. She is now a 38 year old mom of a 16 year old girl (and a 15 year old boy) our granddaughter begged too...my daughter, made her wait to 16!! And has finally admitted we were right lol
