DD7yo is begging to have her ears pierced tonight (school night) is it a bad idea?

So, DD has been begging to have her ears done - fine by me, explained it hurts, taking care of them ect ect.
I suggested waiting until summer holidays due to PE ect.. but DD said the girls in her class don’t take their earrings out for PE and don’t tape them ect. I checked with those parents and the school and they are allowed to wear a small stud during PE. So DD wants it done asap.

Its a non uniform day tomorrow and DD is now begging relentlessly to have her ears done when she gets home tonight so she can show them to her friends with her non-uniform 😂

I don’t know if I’m overthinking it, is it a good idea to send her off to school with fresh piercings? Should we wait until the weekend, or do you think she’ll be ok if she did have them done tonight? She knows she can’t fiddle with them ect. They don’t have PE tomorrow anyway ect. But I’m so undecided.

I think I’d wait until the weekend just in case they’re sore for her tomorrow at school.

im guessing times have changed - I’m sure when I was younger we had to take them out for PE and so because of that we had to wait until summer hols.

This is probably a family I would avoid.

The OP? Why?

Same! I was always told mine had to come out, and if they absolutely couldn’t then they needed to be taped. But school don’t even tape studs at school apparently. One girl I think has small hoops that get taped but nothing else.

I wonder if you can get softer backs. Just because she won’t be used to the feel and if a ball or something hit her ear in pe it would stop the back digging in

I believe we can get flat-backs that screw into the earring. I need to check that though so thanks for the reminder!

I wouldn’t have a problem with the piercings based on you having a proper piercer on tap to do them, nor would ‘school night’ worry me.

My concerns would be:

  1. she’s only been keen on the idea for a few weeks & was previously anti? Hmmm. That’s because she’s 7 & a creature of impulse. Won’t hurt her one bit to wait until the summer.

  2. Easter holiday - no, you can’t just ‘rinse her ears if she gets splashed’! If she’s in the pool, her ears ARE going to be in contact with pool water, which is full of all manner of crap (literally). It’ll probably be fine, because the human immune system is a wonderful thing, but it’s still an open wound being dunked into dirty water. Could cause a really unpleasant infection.

Basically, I think most 7yos would be more upset about being banned from the pool for their holiday - which would be the responsible thing to do with fresh piercings - or ending up with festering ears, than they would with being told sorry, not tonight, after our holiday if you still want to go for it.

@rainbowsandraspberrygin Pierced ears at 7? No one my dc went to school with did this. Just not that type of parent. It’s something I rarely see these days and it’s not a look my DDs would have wanted. It’s just not our world.

Sounds very judgemental!! Type of parent?!

I had a quick google and the average age is 6-10 so 7 is within that range for the UK.

I'm not really sure what the issue is - pierced ears are very common in the UK.

We swapped all ours to these backs

much softer on the ear and easy to remove

Would never allow a seven year old to pierce her or his ears. It's common.

I expect you also think it’s ridiculous that I disapprove of a child of seven having been wearing clip-on earrings "for a few years" (and not just for occasional dressing-up, but regularly and for long enough for her ears to become red and sore)…

Yes, completely ridiculous.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that of my uni friends the ones with these kinds of micromanaging parents went pretty damn wild when finally let off the leash haha

NewGirlInTown · 13/03/2026 02:54

She’s seven, but has had “years of wearing clip ons..”

Seven. Appalling.

Everynamehasgone99 · 13/03/2026 04:23

I'd definitely take her today.

SherbetDipDap · 12/03/2026 16:42

I don’t really see why. How is what children do in PE vastly more complicated or dangerous than anything that generally happens in the playground or the park? My kids are far more adventurous romping around the common or the woods at the weekend than they ever are in PE.

Mainly because schools have to do risk assessments for activities in and out of school. Schools can't take the risk that an earring may be ripped out of a child's ear accidentally during a P.E. activity. Putting a bit of tape over a piercing is a small inconvenience.

Yeah, years of clip ons. She started wearing them around about the same time she started smoking meth.

Loads of dramatic responses on this thread 🙈. Sounds fine to get them done. Last night wouldn’t have been an issue but tonight is fine too then she can show all her pals on Monday. Folk assuming no appointments- obviously you won’t need one but where I live there are hundreds of piercing/tattoo shops so you’d find one plus most do under 16’s for ears with parent permission. Yous maybe just have been better asking your piercer friend for advice as mumsnet in general is dead against piercings a small non functional piece of skin for some reason 😅. In real life dc attend PE, swimming and all manner of other pursuits wearing studs. Only time my girls have ever been asked to take theirs out in a collective 16 years is in their ridden tests in pony club and when riding at championship competitions and higher level showing. All pretty niche

Usually the kids with crippling anxiety too ime.

@Missey85 That suits me. We know our place. How anyone thinks primary age dc with ears pierced is acceptable is beyond me, Don’t tend to see it at prep schools.

Hahah just what I needed to read before a rubbish day at work.
Weekend is a better idea. My 8 yr old had hers done in Dec. Swims weekly too. Opted for needle piercing in a tattoo shop. It's been fine twice daily rinses with saline and a rinse after swimming. Studs could have come out after 6 weeks but we have carried in for 3 months and she can chose something else soon so she's excited.

i think Claire’s is shut now but I took my daughter to Claire’s, they used the gun and we had a very positive experience. we had planned to go somewhere with the needle but we didn’t realise we had to bring a passport for her and so they refused us. We ended up just walking along the street and into Claire’s and thought well, let’s give it a go. it went so well for her I even had a second one done in my ears on the same day. Didn’t hurt a bit on any of them and healed quickly. The needle honestly gives me the creeps!

It’s good you felt you had a positive experience but please don’t encourage people to have their ears pierced with guns, let alone have their kids ears done that way. It’s really rough on the ear. The blunt stud is forced through the tissue which can cause more pain, swelling and trauma especially in kids’ ears which are more delicate. Crucially guns also can’t be fully sterilised which means infection is more likely.

some of the judgement on here is breathtaking! My favourite so far is how ‘common’ it is….
I had mine done at 7, I’m a functioning member of society 😂
When my son came to us and asked for his to be done when he was 9 my DH and I said different answers at the same time, I said yes as my DH said no.
My yes came with the condition that it was when he finished primary school due to the level of swimming and sport he did at the school.
My DH was an outright no for all time because apparently boys don’t have both ears pierced because people would think he was gay or weird!
Its only when we discussed it, that he realised that he was being a judgemental idiot when I said if he had a daughter would he let her have them done at the age of 11, and he said of course.
My son went onto having them done, if anyone thinks he’s gay or odd for having them then that’s on them.
We’re a couple of years on from that conversation and my DH sees men with both ears done all the time now and agrees he was being a judgemental dinosaur.

People can make up their own minds cant they. Not sure the poster was encouraging anyone, just pointing out its not the drama that is often posited on here. Piercing with a gun these days seems akin to letting your children play on the motorway.

Most of us had piercings with a gun, Im not sure its a huge issue.

Of course they can. I just think it’s worth pointing out the increased risk with guns as people are often not aware of it so then they can make an informed decision 🤷🏻‍♀️

There’s no downside to needle piercing in comparison to gun piercing if someone wants to get their child’s ears pierced. I don’t know why anyone would choose the method that is more likely to cause pain and infection but each to their own and better they’re fully informed.
