What are your extravagant spends that you have zero guilt about

My mum lives about 130 miles away from me. I visit her three times a year. I always get an Uber there and a first-class train back.

My friend nearly fell off her seat laughing at my extravagance when I told her about this earlier today😅😅😅

My DH has a bit of a tinned fish habit and can easily spend £70 a month on it.

What ridiculous, extravagant things do you spend money on with zero guilt?

My garden! I spend a lot on seeds, bulbs, compost etc and I got a greenhouse last year!

I also like to have linen bedding and that’s not the cheapest.

I spent £140 on a duvet last month. (menopausal desperation).

My heart rate increased on the way to the till and I felt a bit sick paying for it.

Since I've had it home? Zero regrets.

Ooo, please share (details, not the duvet itself, obviously!)

Gym membership that I don't use quite enough to justify the cost, but love it the couple of times a week that I do go. Also weekly reformer Pilates on top of that.

And YouTube premium, because I bloomin hate the ads.

If you get a Fire Stick you can get the Smart Tube app and watch YT with no ads ;) Takes a bit of fiddly setup but if you look it up there's instructions online. Game changer!

Same here. But also wine, weekly flowers and good butter.

Good butter is a necessity not an extravagance so you're safe on that one😁

Ilovemychocolate · 05/03/2026 17:14

My daughter!
We sent her to private school, now she’s at university I send her SO much money, to ensure she has a great time there.
She doesn’t have to work, and can afford to shop in Waitrose.
I was raised in an incredibly abusive household, so making her life as lovely as possible (not just financially obviously) makes me very happy.
And she is a truly wonderful girl.

Apfelkuchen · 05/03/2026 17:14

Holidays and private HRT consultations.

Our two rescue kittens. They cost me a large adoption fee, a small fortune in insurance costs, and only eat a certain type of pet food which is £100+ a month 😮‍💨 And that’s the literal basics

@ScottishHils . You know you must pay the MN Cat Tax. Pictures of your lovely kittens please 🙂

And thank you for rescuing them.

I’m curious OP, why the Uber there and not first class train both ways?

Mine is my Peloton. Cost a small fortune and there’s a monthly membership but I’ve had it 5 years and still use it loads. In your face, DH who said it’d be a coat rack 🤣

NotMyRealAccount · 05/03/2026 17:16

Really nice kit for sports and other hobbies that I'll never be very good at.

Ilovepastafortea · 05/03/2026 17:20

My teeth.

Can't get an NHS dentist for love or money within 100+ miles so no choice but to go private. Just paid a bill for £990 for a course of treatment. 😰

Amberlynnswashcloth · 05/03/2026 17:21

Taxi into city centre. It costs about £60 round trip but worth every penny to be sat in relative peace and luxury instead of the hell ride that is the rush hour bus.

Campervans. We ordered our third one yesterday, our second brand new one. It is virtually the same as the second one, same company, same model but upgraded in terms of technology.

I would love a campervan. We've hired one before. I can fairly easily afford even a new one but I can't get past what the real cost of camping would therefore be!

kurotora · 05/03/2026 17:24

My pets. Two dogs and three cats. The pet insurance is the main cost, and I do dog shows as a hobby, but they bring me unmatched joy.

I buy loose gemstones just to look at them! Grin I get them out at look at them sparkle like a little goblin! My current favourite is a colour change sapphire.

I too love gemstones. One of my hobbies is jewellery making. When the Rock and Gem Show comes to my area ( twice a year) I can be found lusting after them - and buying some to make jewelry out of.
My main luxuries are earrings, books and CDs.
Also going for coffee with my 2 besties makes me very happy.

louderthan · 05/03/2026 17:26

Horse riding
Having the heating on whenever I want
Posh cat food
Spending over £100.00 on trainers
Meals out
Tattoos!

I work out a lot so I have a HUGE number of cute matching gym outfits. I could go to gym every day without doing laundry for weeks. Do I need all those sets? Of course not, 2 random ones to rotate would be enough. But they make me happy.

Which are your favourite brands and colours?

Hear Hear! Five dogs here. They cost me more to run than 2 DDs and a DH. Worth every penny.😁

My new window shutters. So expensive but I love them.

Same here.

GeraniumRoseblush · 05/03/2026 17:28

Love this thread! Mine are:
Good butter with salt crystals
Expensive cat food for the feral rescue cat I adopted 2 years ago and vowed at the time I wouldn't buy her expensive cat food (yeah, that went well)
Therapy
Luxury hotels
Massage lady
Leather handbags
Cashmere

I always have to budget for the above and sadly the handbags, cashmere and luxury hotels aren't regular purchases but I feel zero guilt when I do buy them 😁

Starlight1979 · 05/03/2026 15:56

I like how your username is @alcoholfreelife and your greatest extravagance is wine 😆

😆 I’ve failed miserably at that task! I was quite optimistic about the whole thing when I changed my username 🤣🤣🤣

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 05/03/2026 17:29

A visit to my hairdresser every three months for colour and foils.

Expensive tea bags.

Fresh meat from the local butcher instead of from the supermarket.

My Kindle unlimited subscription.

bugalugs45 · 05/03/2026 17:31

Surprised nobody had mentioned Mounjaro yet , the price is extortionate but changed mine & so many others lives ,
I can’t give it up ( yet )
I also love champagne , and prosecco just doesn’t cut it quite the same , so once a month or so I splash out 🍾

  1. My piano. In all fairness, I was told throughout my childhood that I was not allowed a piano until I left home. As soon as I moved out, I promptly ordered a Steinway. My mother now says hello to the dogs, plays the piano, and then remembers that she hasn't greeted me yet...
  2. My very expensive 1,000 thread count bedding. I've always had issues with sleeping, so I might as well attempt to do it in comfort and style!
  3. Window shutters. The fact that I can sleep beyond dawn in the summer is amazing!
  4. A sleigh bed. I have wanted one since I was little, so now I have one all for myself!
  5. A proper, old-fashioned bone china dinner set that gets used every day, not just for Christmas and when I have visitors.
  6. Monthly massages, when I can afford the luxury. They seem to help lessen the frequency of my migraines.
  7. More recently, my weekly cleaner. A shiny house cheers me up, and is good for my mental health! Also, it means that I don't spend my rare full days off doing housework...
  8. Eventually, it will be my forever car that will require my wages for two years, just to pay for it...

I grew up in a household where we usually had the cheaper version of everything. It was a case of, "Buy cheap, buy twice". I now take pleasure in buying the best of everything that I can, with the intention of keeping and using it forever!

ThatAgileLimeCat · 05/03/2026 17:33

I splashed out on stupidly expensive garden furniture 2 years ago . Was worried I would regret it. I was wrong. Bloody love it and it makes me happy.

HeadyLamarr · 05/03/2026 17:35

@applescentedcandle - I like the cushioned walking socks from Community Clothing, although their packs of 3 pairs of regular socks are good too.

They are made in the UK by people paid a living wage and are mostly cotton. They are just so comfortable and wear very well. Expensive to start with but outlast my M&S socks by a long way.

Cushioned Cotton Walking Sock - Pink/White

Community Clothing's bestselling socks are hard-wearing cotton walking socks featuring a marled pattern with a cushioned sole   80% Cotton 20% Polyamide Key Features: - Ribbed knit - Lower Calf length - Size S/M (UK 3-7), M/L (UK 8-13) - Knitted in Hat...
