What are your extravagant spends that you have zero guilt about

My mum lives about 130 miles away from me. I visit her three times a year. I always get an Uber there and a first-class train back.

My friend nearly fell off her seat laughing at my extravagance when I told her about this earlier today😅😅😅

My DH has a bit of a tinned fish habit and can easily spend £70 a month on it.

What ridiculous, extravagant things do you spend money on with zero guilt?

Craft supplies, specifically Tim Holtz, love all his papers & stuff, America seems to have the best craft papers. Also vintage ephemera! It seems mad to spend money on old paper but I love it! My dream is to go to the Paris flea markets and have a good rummage.

Londonmummy66 · 05/03/2026 17:37

My housekeeper, my handbags and Penelope Chilvers boots, private members club subscription and the maintenance on a georgian house.

BasketAzure · 05/03/2026 17:38

Tinned oily fish is a superfood.

Fresh flowers and good food and ingredients for home cooking.

YouTube with no ads. There's so much on there, exercise videos and Jane Austen films at present.

Trips to Amsterdam to take another "trip".

Scented candles from one particular online store. The large sizes cost £50 each and I buy about 3 or 4 a year. They are glorious and bring me so much joy.

Which store please . I love candles and always like a new recommendation

igelkott2026 · 05/03/2026 17:41

A running sock subscription, I get a new pair each month. They are really nice and the company donates some of its profits to MS charities.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 05/03/2026 17:42

dance/ballroom dancing!

my husband and I take one group class a week, do a Saturday „workshop“ about 5 times a year and take private lessons.

I‘m also accumulating a collection of dance shoes… 😍 I actually bought a sparkly pair of heels yesterday. They’re adorable and I love them 😀

(Our first class train passes could be called an extravagance but I feel like we genuinely need those😅)

After I've moved house I'm getting a sauna put in. And it the property is right for it, a wild swimming pond in the garden.

52andblue · 05/03/2026 17:45

@PermanentTemporary please would you share the shoe brands you recommend? ,(also apocalyptically bad feet, post surgery)

FrangipaneMincies · 05/03/2026 16:04

Have you tried making them?

Many times. They turn out like the clay pigeons my brother brought back from the shooting range he worked in. I just can't get them to work.

LoserWinner · 05/03/2026 17:48

I spent about half the money I inherited from my Dad on a gold Rolex. He always had a thing for nice watches, though never in that price bracket, and every time I check the time, I think ‘thanks, Dad.’

You obviously have time and money

Ain’t that the truth! My mum lives 5 hours away, I can’t stay with her because she smokes like a chimney, petrol is about £70 each way (biggish car due to horse-sadly no longer with us/dogs).

My ‘indulgence’ is clothing, but I do look for less expensive stuff-hello Vinted-so I can buy a lot. Didn’t have a choice when I lost a lot of weight, but now I’m just addicted 🤦🏼‍♀️ Dogs cost a fortune, various issues and they have new toys/treats regularly.

Hiddenhouse · 05/03/2026 17:51

My log burner and kiln dried logs to burn in it
my new leather handbag
trips to the hairdresser
buying butcher meat
keeping a flock of bantams
my gardening addiction
but life is for enjoying and these things help

FancyCatSlave · 05/03/2026 17:52

Mine used to be horses and a Cleaner. Now it is food. I buy whatever I want to eat. Don’t look at the prices.

When I have moved it will be a Cleaner again and eventually another horse (can’t have one until DD older as she is absolutely not interested and I can’t manage to ride with an unwilling 6 year old and no childcare).

Tinned fish is so trendy and expensive these days!! 😂

What kind of fish?

I'm really pretty poor at the moment, so my extravagance is something that most people wouldn't even notice, but - my audible membership. An audio book every month is such a luxury; I run the books overnight to help me fall and stay asleep and it's like being read to all snuggled up in bed when you were a child.

So it's only about £8.99 per month, but it's money I can't really afford and yet...

Have a look at borrowbox, you can sign up online through your local library, the audiobooks have revolutionised my life, and the best bit is it's free, I haven't needed my audible subscription for ages.

TulipsinaJar · 05/03/2026 17:58

Theatre tickets- I know from experience that if I go cheap or even mid-price I spend the whole performance wishing I hadn't.

Diary from Smythson every year- very expensive but also my best value for money purchase of the year.

Wine, on the basis that I plan to drink less if it's very nice but this hasn't really worked so far.

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 05/03/2026 17:59

My Porsche 911 .

corblimeyguvnr · 05/03/2026 17:55

What kind of fish?

Mainly mackerel and sardines in a variety or oils and sauces.

DJSteves · 05/03/2026 18:01

I go to any gig I want to. I just buy resale

godmum56 · 05/03/2026 18:02

My garden
My garden
coffee in a local posh cafe
Nice shower gel and body lotion.
oh and my garden

sesquipedalian · 05/03/2026 18:06

Buying books and Lego for my grandchildren. Sometimes, I think I’m single-handedly keeping the Lego company in business…

God, everything. I spend a lot of money. Picking out the things I feel no guilt at all about -

My hair. Had to cut the whole family’s hair for 12 years or so and hated it, so I love having hair that looks good now.

My cleaner.

My wedding. I’ve just spent 4 figures on my wedding dress, which is an evening dress rather than a classic wedding dress, and I probably love it about equally with my fiancé.

My shoes. I have apocalyptically bad feet. I now only buy two brands of shoe, my feet never hurt and I never have blisters. For the first 40 years of my life I assumed that all shoes were agony until they’d fallen to pieces.

Seconding the request for your two shoe brand recommendations from @52andblue !

I have some expensive boots that were absolutely worth it but they're a Canadian brand and I'll be moving back to the UK soon, so looking for some footwear brands that are instantly comfortable and high quality. I have heard about Calla and Sole Bliss for feet with bunions specifically, but haven't tried them.

MissMarplesNiece · 05/03/2026 18:09

Piano lessons and tickets for the opera.
