What are your extravagant spends that you have zero guilt about

LittlePrecious · 05/03/2026 15:24

My mum lives about 130 miles away from me. I visit her three times a year. I always get an Uber there and a first-class train back.

My friend nearly fell off her seat laughing at my extravagance when I told her about this earlier today😅😅😅

My DH has a bit of a tinned fish habit and can easily spend £70 a month on it.

What ridiculous, extravagant things do you spend money on with zero guilt?

Love seeing all this.

For me, it's seeing new places. It's not always expensive - yesterday I went early to an unfamiliar town, did their parkrun, had a poke around the museum and the charity shops, walked on the beach, had a slice of cake and came home content. Other times there will be longer travel and hotels and it won't be cheap.

It makes me feel alive. Without it, I feel like a hamster on a treadmill. With it, I feel like the hamster running triumphantly free.

@LadyMacbethWasFiercein so sorry about your loss. Flowers and candles are lovely to honour her

People are losing the plot here and obviously don't know what the word "extravagance" means. It's not:

Lurpak butter
paying off your mortgage

It does not mean "hold luggage" when you are flying business class

It means different things to different people, do you not realise that?

For you to scoff at people's thoughts on extravagant items says a lot about you.

There will be a billionaire somewhere that will be scoffing at your idea of extravagance...well they would if they were a complete dick.

Lurpack is DEFINITELY an extravagance for a lot of people.

Lucky you!

President butter (in my case ) IS an extravagance because it is beyond my grocery budget without making other sacrifices, and it is a product where (for me) the enjoyment is greater than the function. I could buy cheaper serviceable butter, President isn’t a necessity, it is, in my budget, a luxury. And therefore extravagant.

Though I admit it lacks the ‘wasteful’ element of ‘extravagance’

What do you consider to be an acceptable answer to the question in the OP? Private jets? Swimming pool? Please let us know so that those of us who can’t afford those things can leave the thread.

OMG that Belle Iloise website is fab! What a lovely place to find tasty little extravagances. My DH also loves tinned fish and pretty much all the stuff on there so I know what he's getting for our anniversary now!

I've thought of a few more extravagances, which I guess I just think of as 'life' or necessary maintenance, but to many they would be extravagant - I love bags and coats and have quite a few, certainly more than I need, my book habit (I read about 40 per year and have a whole room full of bookshelves aka my 'library'), regular Botox, annual Radiesse, haircut and highlights every eight weeks, professional teeth whitening and invisalign. I just think as you get older it's worth investing in your appearance, if you can afford it.

Human hair toppers.
My hair has been ruined from years of iron deficiency. Around 15 years ago I discovered hair toppers and although not cheap they have given me back my confidence.

Similar situation here. Please can you let me know where you get yours from as I’d love to look into it for myself.

Incredible, can you please share details? This is my DH’s dream trip.

I flew to Buenos Aires, then to Ushuia at the bottom tip of Argentina. I went from there to the Antarctic Peninsula, South Georgia and the Falkland Islands, with a company called Albatros expeditions. There are restrictions on how many people can be onshore at a time, so the smaller the ship the more time you spend on land. I went in December/January which is peak time for seeing Penguins.

Next time, I'm going from New Zealand to the Ross Sea and East Antarctica.

I hate spending money. I don't buy anything extravangant for myself because I wouldn't enjoy it.

But. I rescued a cat a couple of years ago who it turns out is allergic to chicken and fish. As an exercise, try finding a complete, high quality cat food without chicken and fish. Then multiply the daily cost by 1.5 because she is a hyperactive 2 year old athlete who spends hours climbing, jumping and exploring outdoors. She is tiny, compact, pure hard muscle and there isn't a gram of fat on her.

At one point she was eating imported kangaroo from Germany. I'm serious. One day I was unpacking it and had a moment like "imagine explaining to an 18th C mill worker that my cat eats pure imported kangaroo meat from Germany".

This is genuinely one of the funniest things I’ve ever read. I hope your cat fully appreciates how fortunate she is.

I love this. What a great idea - and a fabulous image of the hamster running wild and free!

Love this thread! I didn't realise there was such an extensive market of tinned fish, I feel like this could become my extravagance! 😂

Gosh @dubbie you are either really very rude or you are blinkered and have very little understanding of the world. Can I suggest some voluntary work as a learning exercise for you?

I fell in love with the Santa Maria Novella pot pouri a few years ago, it's scent is so unique and lasts for months. I buy it three times a year and have it shipped over from Florence.

We have this too + the scents x 3 + showee gel & soaps

I decant the pot pouri into little hessian drawstring bags & hang from door handles etc .

The smell is absolutely wonderful & lasts AGES. Every so ofen i shake up the little bags & it reactivates the scent

Our house smells amazing!

My other extravagances are:

Perfume - Tom Ford, Le Labo, Creed, Santa Maria Novella, Guerlain etc. I have 20+

Books & literary related events - courses, readings, conferences. It's my main passion

Theatre & art - we attend a lot of events

Travel - we go abroad several times a year & those trips keep me sane. This year i will be in European cities 5 times over the year at least.

We also do lots of nights away nationally. Often work related but we love exploring new places

Jewellery, i adore good jewellery & am lucky enough to have several bespoke pieces which i'm obsessed with

Good coffee from our Sage machine has ruined going out for coffee for me

Clothes & shoes, coats & bags

Food & wine.

We're in our 50s now & love living life to the max where we can

bibliomania · 08/03/2026 12:58

Scrolling back and wow, that's sultry, @Beachtastic ! Love it!

iloveeverykindofcat · 08/03/2026 12:59

@Summergarden its a strange life we live in the year 2026. Anyway I'm getting made redundant soon - which I kind of wanted, seeing as my time with this employer has run its course and it turns out they have to give me a rather bigger payout than I expected - so I've been cutting outgoings and really gotten good at feeding my normal self and my normal cat very frugally and nutritiously these past couple of months. The rescue cat continues to eat the finest human grade pure exclusion meats available from Zooplus. She is also allergic to grass pollen. So she's a cat, and she's allergic to chicken, fish and grass. I feel like evolution really dropped the ball there.

I love this description. I currently feel like a hamster on a wheel and I want to run free!

I always used to lunch once every few weeks/months with a relative who has since died and left me a small sum of money.
I sometimes take myself off for a delightful solo lunch which is often at a quality pub or restaurant and indulge in a glass of wine and silently toast said relative that allows me to afford this (because otherwise I'd never justify the extravagance)

I also like browsing fabric shops and second-hand bookshops am not immune to taking myself off to a town in a different area, often miles from home, to investigate.

I'm only on page 1 but I love this thread. I've just spent a few hundred pounds on a few months' mounjaro and have just bought a beautiful leather phone case. The phone case wasn't expensive, but it was the fourth for my new phone I bought in January.
I like hearing from people who dont feel guilty about treating themselves.

I'll now carry on reading the post!

Clinique skincare. I hgad acne as a teenager and in my twenties In my thirties I got adult chicken pox and was horribly scarred. Clinique sorted my skin out and I look much younger than my age. However, I only buy where there is a discount or free delivery and I stockpile it. I deserve nice skin in my more mature years.

Becca8675309 · 08/03/2026 16:47

Adult ballet lessons! Loads and loads of them. I love the fact that say on a Tuesday morning at 11am, while everyone else is sitting at a desk, doing housework or stuck in traffic - I am twirling and leaping through the air to the most beautiful music! Plus I have drawers bursting with tights and leotards of all kinds, and a whole closet full of gorgeous skirts of chiffon and velvet, and cashmere wraps and legwarmers.
