What are your extravagant spends that you have zero guilt about

My mum lives about 130 miles away from me. I visit her three times a year. I always get an Uber there and a first-class train back.

My friend nearly fell off her seat laughing at my extravagance when I told her about this earlier today😅😅😅

My DH has a bit of a tinned fish habit and can easily spend £70 a month on it.

What ridiculous, extravagant things do you spend money on with zero guilt?

God, everything. I spend a lot of money. Picking out the things I feel no guilt at all about -

My hair. Had to cut the whole family’s hair for 12 years or so and hated it, so I love having hair that looks good now.

My cleaner.

My wedding. I’ve just spent 4 figures on my wedding dress, which is an evening dress rather than a classic wedding dress, and I probably love it about equally with my fiancé.

My shoes. I have apocalyptically bad feet. I now only buy two brands of shoe, my feet never hurt and I never have blisters. For the first 40 years of my life I assumed that all shoes were agony until they’d fallen to pieces.

Which shoe brands do you recommend? I tend to stick to Gabor (although recently discovered Dune) because I am so desperate for comfort

My coffee culture habit, weekly fresh flowers and fancy candles. I never feel guilt at “ extravagance ” whether its a good holiday, the odd first class train ticket or exclusively taking taxis when I go up to London . I have worked bloody hard all my life both at work and as a parent and carer and now will enjoy the fruits of my labours if I want with zero guilt.

My £200 a month Pilates and £40 a month Peloton

PermanentTemporary · 07/03/2026 20:20

I spent £140 on a duvet last month. (menopausal desperation).

My heart rate increased on the way to the till and I felt a bit sick paying for it.

Since I've had it home? Zero regrets.

I need to know more about the duvet! Does it help night sweats? Please tell me more?

I love fresh flowers but am dreadful at arranging them so we pay a local florist to once a week deliver and arrange flowers for us.

We also pay a chef to cook for us 3 nights per week, he comes with the ingredients cooks for our family and goes.

Wow how much per night? if you don't mind me asking...

My house. The mortgage is horrendous, but I work from home and the enjoyment I get out of the light here is insane.

i’m pretty low maintenance apart from that but do love a beauty advent calendar.

the light? please explain..

the light? please explain..

1970s house with big picture windows downstairs, and wide windows upstairs. The light just floods through and I love it

Blanketsarethebest · 07/03/2026 22:58

@iloveeverykindofcat please can you tell me the kibble you use? My cat has IBD so we've been through similar trying to find novel protein (although never made it to kangaroo!). Sorted with wet food but he's definitely allergic to chicken and they've just changed the recipe for the dry food we've given him for years which now has chicken in it... helpful 🙄🙄🙄 thank you!

I went on a small expedition ship to Antarctica to see Penguins, and I'm going again! I love Penguins.

That's very cool!

Ownedbykitties · 07/03/2026 23:46

@PermanentTemporary. Please tell us what make are your comfortable shoes? I too have feet that hurt for various reasons. I currently buy Sole Bliss ( expensive) and Lotus ( not expensive).

Cherryicecreamx · 08/03/2026 00:25

My solo trips! I'll book a nice spa hotel somewhere, maybe a first class train ticket if I don't drive, and whatever meal I fancy, whether it's a fancy restaurant or room service. It really resets me 🙏

I think the raising agent has to be evenly distributed within the flour and also very fresh.

I believe the baking powder over here (Germany) is different from GB baking powder so that could affect results. My senses could be misleading me, but I'm still convinced SR flour, even if it's been sitting in my cupboard for a few months, performs better.

Business Class tickets for transatlantic flights. The lie flat seats make all the difference.

Squirrelchops1 · 08/03/2026 01:42

Hold luggage.
Having tried the easyjet 'under seat' bag.. schlepping weight around an airport, similarly the hassle of a cabin bag, having weeded out everything i like for practical items, I don't care anymore.
I want to take what I want on holiday. So fuck it.

That being said, last year I had the biggest luggage allowance ever as was in business. However we took cabin sized back packs at 9kg each!!!!!!! This was due to our onwards travel plans plus were in Asia so could guaranteed warm.

iloveeverykindofcat · 08/03/2026 05:57

@Blanketsarethebest there are a few single source protein brands that exclude chicken and fish - we've found options in Wainrights (turkey), Cosma (beef) and Aatu (Duck, but my girl doesnt have duck, its too rich for her and makes her nauseous). You have to really read the ingredient list though. So many brands that say 'limited ingredients' or 'grain free' have some quantity of chicken it, basically because its cheap and abundant!

People are losing the plot here and obviously don't know what the word "extravagance" means. It's not:

Lurpak butter
paying off your mortgage

It does not mean "hold luggage" when you are flying business class

When I got burgled my grans bracelet, my ring from my 21st and the watch my husband bought me for our wedding day got stolen. I spent the insurance money on a £700 Gucci watch (15 years ago).
It costs me £80 a pop for a battery change every year.

I have a lovely gucci watch my now DH bought me in Italy 23 years ago. I love it and now have the Timpsons lifetime battery card as the gucci ones just don't last, also cost about £80 but that's it. Although it does mean it's no longer waterproof (not an issue for me personally as I always take it off to protect it).

I think it means whatever the person using it wants to.

PersephoneParlormaid · 08/03/2026 07:28

I was gifted a 1000 count Egyptian cotton fitted sheet and I’ll never go back to normal cotton. They aren’t cheap, but when the first one went I didn’t hesitate to replace it. Not only does it feel silky, but the cotton is thick and the elastic is good quality.

It absolutely can mean all of those things. Extravagance will depend on your income. For someone on a low income, Lurpak is an extravagance (to them). It’s not up to anyone else to rule on what is an extravagance to other people.

lovethepuppies · 08/03/2026 09:12

Mounjaro ( saxenda initially ) used it when it first started becoming available around 2023. I lost 12.5 stone in a year and kept every pound off
the other is my jambats addiction. They sell dungarees trousers dresses and they make me so happy to wear them every day . The fabrics are so soft and people often comment on what I’m wearing and where it’s from, which is lovely

I referenced flying business class as this was a one off treat and the irony of my luggage situation as I didn't need any hold allowance.
If you read my post you see I mention easyjet. Paying £100 for return hold luggage is an extravagance where I could instead just use free under seat allowance or cabin only but have the inconvenience of traipsing it with me.
