Girls at DD’s school cannot wear socks because men and boys feel uncomfortable

DD’s school has placed a ban on girls wearing socks due to persistent issues with girls wearing skirts that are too short and not the school’s regulation kilts. According to the e-mail sent to parents, girls wearing socks with said short skirts has resulted in some “members of the school community” feeling uncomfortable. When the issue was raised further by some parents, the (male) Deputy made it clear that it was essentially unfair to male pupils, and presumably teachers, to be made to feel awkward when girls undergarments were visible to them. There have also been issues with boys making suggestive comments to girls in short skirts.

I support the school enforcing school uniform policy but hate the fact that 12 year old DD and her friends are already being policed as to what they can or cannot wear because…men. DD hates the thick black tights she now has to wear. She always wore the correct length skirt and knee high socks.

The situation will apparently be reviewed ahead of the warmer months. I just feel this reinforces the view that girls & women need to ensure they dress in a way that doesn’t attract male attention but boys are not learning that inappropriate comments and behaviour towards a girl because of the way she dresses is completely unacceptable.

Went on a twin town holiday to Italy Florence & Rome , we really had a great time hotel in Florence was within walking distance to nearly all the attractions and we had a fantastic guide in Rome he really knew his stuff

I can safely say in Thailand and Sri Lanka school skirts are no higher than just above the knee and in many schools quite a lot below.

Skirts all seemed to be normal length Rome probably shorter but can confirm they all had better legs than me 🤣

All the deputy needed to do was remind all children of the dress code. The issue here is that the male deputy has now sexualised every single girl at the school with his comments. The boys making the sexual comments are the problem, NOT the short skirts of a handful of girls. Has the school done anything at all to tackle that, other than blaming the girls?!
The offending girls should absolutely be taken aside and educated on why the dress code is there - because it's professional, etc. NOT because it makes boys and teachers (!) "uncomfortable".
This is absolutely the beginning of the old trope, "She was asking for it". I would be absolutely furious with the deputy and would be complaining to his superior. It's completely unacceptable.

I don't think @Eastie77Returns is suggesting that there is anything inappropriate about the dress code. The issue is the sexualised nature in which the deputy has handled a breaking of the rules.

I agree it’s unfair to the pupils who wear the correct length skirt. But I don’t agree especially around me, that it is the minority that roll up their skirts!
But if I was a teacher I would call the parents of the pupils wearing their skirts too short, to bring in trousers every single time.

I’m female and I don’t want to see teenage girl’s underwear. It’s embarrassing.

At my dd's school the girls still manage to show their butt cheeks in (thin) tights.
Skirt length often mentioned in letters and seems to never be enforced. Apparently even council safeguarding have raised it as a concern.

If the girls are breaking school rules they will have to face the consequences - does the school send them home each time they are caught? Notify parents ? Meetings with parents of those offenders?

I've urged her to complain about him, he's broken a lot of rules there......
