Husband and toddler have eaten out of date sushi

Just in a bit of a panic as DH has just called me to say that he has accidentally eaten and given our toddler out of date sushie ( tesco meal deal pack). Use by was the 17/2 !
He said there was no obvious mold or bad taste.
I'm not normally a panicky person but this is so high risk with rice! It's been in his car for the weekend so not like its been in the fridge.
He bought some fresh today but didn't realise there was an old packet from last week!
Is there any I can do. Should I call nhs 111?

I wouldn't call 111 but I would call my GP or submit a web form for triage. I know our Doctors would call back with some advice. It's a toddler whose eaten almost 7 day old sushi thats been left in a car.....I doubt their reply will be 'what do you want us to do about it'.

Ultimately no one here is a doctor and absolutely no one here is qualified to give you advice. Maybe a doctor says - watch and wait, or maybe they ask you to come in, but they, at least, are best positioned to give you that advice - unlike anyone here.....

No GP is going to call back, are they, seriously?
To say what?

GrooveArmada · 24/02/2026 20:51

Keeping sushi in a car? Eating it after it was left in a car? Giving it to a toddler?

I mean, I think your husband isn't the brightest bulb but what's done is done, you have to wait and see. I'd watch your toddler now. Then educate your husband, he really needs it.

Your kefir and sauerkraut comments are pure madness too, they are helpful to gut health generally or in recovery, they will not prevent food poisoning. Between you and your husband, you sound like your 'knowledge' comes from Chat GPT.

Of course their reply will be “what do you want us to do about it?” What else would they reply?! How can they treat an illness they may or may not exist? Why on earth would someone not presenting any food poisoning symptoms be asked to come into the clinic?

Exactly. They would not. Plus GPs are closed now, so it would be the Out of Hours, who are not going to do that!

cestlavielife · 24/02/2026 20:58

Well dont take toddler to soft play.
Stay close to bathrooms
It will pass one way or another

goz · 24/02/2026 21:00

Now we know why the nhs is f’d. A large portion of the country are going to A&E for eating an out of date sandwich.

IsThistheMiddleofNowhere · 24/02/2026 21:01

You are right to be worried but I don't know what you can do. I had the worst food poisoning ever from rice that was in a warm display cabinet in Greece. I would say it took about 4 to 5 hours to kick off after eating it and I felt rotten for about 24 hours. Fingers crossed they are OK but I would be on standby with big bowls and towels just in case.

No that the toddler eats sushi and kefir and sauerkraut (whatever the fuck that is)

You don’t know what sauerkraut is? Why do you think that’s some kind of flex? It’s a perfectly normal food and very good for you.

As mentioned, there’s nothing unusual about children liking perfectly normal foods. It’s pretty sad that in this country people are conditioning their kids to only eat shit like chicken nuggets and chips and telling them that’s what they like without even giving them a chance to develop their own tastes.

What’s even more sad is people like you who seem to think that people who have kids that enjoy these perfectly normal foods must be boasting 🙄.

No wonder there’s a fucking obesity crisis.

To be fair, I know toddlers who love stuff like this. My niece much prefers olives to sweets. Not all kids automatically want a beige diet.

Olives, pickles and sushi lover small person here too....also smoked salmon (when I can afford it lol) sauerkraut is just fermented cabbage isnt it?

Hospital like now. As someone who has worked in the food industry id get down there now. Just explain what's happened.

Don't be so daft.

I’m not a kid, eat pretty much anything. Two things I’d prefer not to eat are sushi and sauerkraut

Mithral · 24/02/2026 21:26

Agree it would be madness to turn up at the hospital but I doubt the NHS will be overrun if everybody who's fed their toddler week old car sushi attends.

Think it's just OP's DH on his own there tbh.

Badgerandfox227 · 24/02/2026 21:30

I’d also be in a panic OP, hope they’re both fine x

user1492757084 · 24/02/2026 21:41

I would phone "nurse on call".

They might ask you to go to nearest A&E and be administered with activated charcoal, or might think waiting and observing is sufficient.
Keep a record of the actual ingredients.

No they wouldn’t.

NarnianQueen · 24/02/2026 21:44

If it smelled ok it was probably fine. Sell by dates are to protect the supermarket! And leaving it in the car sounds bad but it’s not exactly been warm the last few days so it’s not like it’s been left at room temperature!

Seiheiki · 24/02/2026 21:45

Good luck to them!

CP2392 · 24/02/2026 21:46

This has been a funny read. Not sure how some of you survive daily life ffs

Ally886 · 24/02/2026 21:50

I worked in a food manufacturer for years inc sushi. All of us ate 2 days out of date sushi a few times a week. It's an arbitrary number that changes based on ingredients and season.

What if I told you there are 3 days of the year where all fresh and chilled food is given an extra 3 or 4 days life and nobody dies?

IDrinkTeaAllTheTime · 24/02/2026 21:52

cardibach · 24/02/2026 21:25

Which is totally fine. I will eat pretty much anything, but there are a few things that I absolutely can’t stand. There’s obviously nothing wrong with disliking sushi and sauerkraut. I personally love them, but I can absolutely understand why people don’t like them - sauerkraut, especially.

My annoyance was with the PP I quoted, and a couple of others who more or less suggested that anyone saying their kids like these things are either lying or boasting. It’s one of the worst kinds of reverse snobbery and I see it a lot on here when food is mentioned in relation to children.

Your toddler eats sushi, kefir and sauerkraut? Cool.

😆😆😆

placemats · 24/02/2026 22:06

Frangardens · 24/02/2026 20:46

And to be clear - in this scenario, as the mother of this toddler, you’d shrug your shoulders and tell your husband it’s his problem to deal with.

Bloody. Hell @placemats

Well yes because he's the father who also lost three pregnancies as well and watched their births, changed nappies, sat up all night. Someone I could count on to do the right thing. Bloody hell @Frangardens don't your children have this father?

LeopardPants · 24/02/2026 22:06

This thread is hilarious. I would just say make sure you have plenty of toilet paper to hand. That is probably sufficient 😄

Putyourownlifejacketonfirst · 24/02/2026 22:12

Omg, I can’t believe this post.
obviously out of date anything left in a car maybe dodgy, just wait and see if anyone gets food poisoning, then act. Please do not go to our already overwhelmed NHS.

That's my children's father btw.

And he wasn't perfect and neither was I.

But I didn't think I was his mum l, because his mum was a fine person, as was his dad.

In the OPs scenario, she's obviously parenting with a dick head.
