Husband and toddler have eaten out of date sushi

Just in a bit of a panic as DH has just called me to say that he has accidentally eaten and given our toddler out of date sushie ( tesco meal deal pack). Use by was the 17/2 !
He said there was no obvious mold or bad taste.
I'm not normally a panicky person but this is so high risk with rice! It's been in his car for the weekend so not like its been in the fridge.
He bought some fresh today but didn't realise there was an old packet from last week!
Is there any I can do. Should I call nhs 111?

The strangest post of this entire thread was @placemats post that @Sailawaygirl should leave her husband to it as it happened under his care so it’s his problem!

It isn't a MN thread if no-one says LTB!

No culture eats 7 day old rice in Asia , rice is consumed at all 3 meals , it’s cooked fresh every morning and is on the stove all day and people scoop some each meal , hardly any rice remains by next morning.

Nonsense. Rice that has been cooking for hours becomes mush.

People in rice-eating countries the world over are incredulous at the hysteria there is around reheated rice.

I just made a joke in response to a pp comment that someone had said to leave her dh. That much I think I understood, and wasn't claiming to have understood more than that?

Oh I see what you mean. Yes, I did read that as "leave her husband." I'm too accustomed to it you see!

WhatYouWearing · 26/02/2026 13:19

So what happened?

hollytheheroic · 26/02/2026 22:14

I can't believe the OP didn't come back.

Whatsappweirdo · 27/02/2026 11:43

Hope you’re all ok?!

Fluperson · 28/02/2026 11:15

Maybe it wasn't real? If it was, I hope they're OK.

shellyleppard · 28/02/2026 14:19

@hollytheheroic i was expecting tales of explosive bowels... Either from the sushi or the natural remedies

Alternativelyviewed · 28/02/2026 15:17

Any updates ? Are they ok ?

Pantsagogo · 28/02/2026 18:03

What happened next... hopefully nothing!

Pog166 · 28/02/2026 18:54

The tension is killing me. Did they survive? Are they even now in the recovery position in a secure containment facility in case they explode?

Grendel7 · 28/02/2026 19:46

Sailawaygirl · 24/02/2026 15:56

They are downing kefir and juice from sauerkraut for the good gut bacteria. Worth a shot.

Yak,glad i don't live with you!

Sailawaygirl · 28/02/2026 19:50

I wasn't going to update as the thread got slightly detailed. But amazingly everyone is fine! Toddler continues to enjoy kefir and sauerkraut ( obviously not mixed together)

Notmeagain24 · 28/02/2026 21:05

So pleased no one got ill!. Makes you wonder what on earth they put in those sushi packs to keep them preserved like that. Thank goodness, though, in this instance! Thanks for updating, I was wondering what had happened Xx

Perhaps try to get some Silicol Gel from Boots or Holland and Barrett. It absorbs toxins in the digestive system and works quickly. Other than that, as other people have said, advise them to drink loads of water and let nature take its course.
Good luck..🤞

They were both absolutely fine, thankfully (OP updated a few posts previously).

gottakeeponmoving · 01/03/2026 12:13

Thank you for the update

Giddykiddy · 01/03/2026 13:16

Great news and so glad you let it follow its course- to all the call 111 & A&E merchants and those who live in terror of rice - remember how amazingly resilient our bodies are and PLEASE stop bothering the NHS about things that haven't happened. It's on its knees - every distraction has an impact

hugbilly · 01/03/2026 13:20

Just hope for the best, don’t panic, and it’s highly likely they’ll both be absolutely fine.

Honestly the hysteria around rice and food poisoning is crackers. You do realise that cultures all over the world regularly eat reheated rice and still manage to survive?
While in this case, I dont think anyone would suggest eating anything that had been stored in a car for a week instead of a fridge is a good idea, it certainly does not need the level of panic displayed by some posters. Not sure what some people expect the NHS to do? Pre-emptively pump the stomach of a toddler - just to avoid the possibility of a short bout of D&V caused by some rice! FFS🙄

Science and bacteria dont care about cultures being wrong.

Food poisoning traced to improperly stored and cooked rice is a massive issue, even in reported numbers, in countries that eat rice that view western safety standards sceptically. With numbers known to be massively under reported on top.

We will stick with and teach basic science based food safety that objectively makes the country safer, not anti science attitudes that aren't really intellectually any better than being anti vax.
