Husband and toddler have eaten out of date sushi

Just in a bit of a panic as DH has just called me to say that he has accidentally eaten and given our toddler out of date sushie ( tesco meal deal pack). Use by was the 17/2 !
He said there was no obvious mold or bad taste.
I'm not normally a panicky person but this is so high risk with rice! It's been in his car for the weekend so not like its been in the fridge.
He bought some fresh today but didn't realise there was an old packet from last week!
Is there any I can do. Should I call nhs 111?

It is potentially not great. But you can't do anything at all about it now. Wait and monitor at least 72h before you can start to think he got away with it.

Be prepared just in case. Stay well hydrated if anyone feels or seems like they are becoming unwell, and obviously get help if the the unfortunate happens and the symptoms get bad.

You can't smell or generally taste a lot of the things that are dangerous with food poisoning.

Not anymore.
The amount of chemicals added to food to prolong life and appearance now is ludicrous.
Particularly seafood.
Smell test isn't a thing these days.

It does in our house. If we haven't eaten the fish in two days we have to chuck it - it reeks! 🤢

Oh hush now.

I take it you’re not a parent

Mother of three children. Three miscarriages as well. I've done my bit.

However, I suppose the supermarket packet sushi is probably highly processed. I don't know, I've never had it.

justasking111 · 24/02/2026 19:49

DS makes sushi from scratch learnt as a student. Bacillus cereus can form in pasta not just rice btw.

Hospital like now. As someone who has worked in the food industry id get down there now. Just explain what's happened.

What preemptive treatment would you expect?

ReprogramNeeded · 24/02/2026 20:07

Best before or use by?

Drinking kefir and sauerkraut juice together is enough to make anyone vomit.

It's done now, you'll just have to wait and see.

Why? There is no reason for vomitting.

I wouldn't worry until they felt unwell, if they get unwell at all.
What do people expect 111 to do? They're hardly going to rush you in for a stomach pump

Edited

So personally I think it will be absolutely fine, so many preservatives in stuff nowadays and very rare for fish to actually be "raw" in a "off the shelf" packet, that said, I would definitely be on red alert and monitor the situation, short of induced vomiting (which is likely too late now) there's not much you can do but react if something happens.

7 day old sushi festering in a car “mixed up” with an identical pack of just purchased fresh cold sushi.

Very odd. I suspect he’s telling the OP porkies

I thought this too- who has a random pack of sushi in the car a week later??? I hope it’s lies anyway for the wee ones sake.

I would be very surprised and impression if a toddler was eating a load of sauerkraut!

Growing up in a Ukrainian household I used to crawl under the kitchen sink storage area and devour as much homemade saurkraut as I could before I was caught from about two years old. Its like any food, you like what you’re brought up on.

saveforthat · 24/02/2026 15:55

Is it fish or all veggie?

Doesn’t matter. Rice at room (or warm ) temp for a weekend is a no go

Overthebow · 24/02/2026 20:22

So it’s bonus out of date sushi, it’s sushi that’s been sitting in a car for a week instead of did the fridge, and is also out of date. I really hope they’re both ok.

Yes I know but fish would smell rank if out of date.

Your toddler eats sushi, kefir and sauerkraut? Cool.

To be fair, I know toddlers who love stuff like this. My niece much prefers olives to sweets. Not all kids automatically want a beige diet.

Vivienne1000 · 24/02/2026 20:29

You will soon know if they have food poisoning. It will be very rapid. Until then, hold fire and hope they will be absolutely fine.

Kerry242 · 24/02/2026 20:30

I wouldn't call 111 but I would call my GP or submit a web form for triage. I know our Doctors would call back with some advice. It's a toddler whose eaten almost 7 day old sushi thats been left in a car.....I doubt their reply will be 'what do you want us to do about it'.

Ultimately no one here is a doctor and absolutely no one here is qualified to give you advice. Maybe a doctor says - watch and wait, or maybe they ask you to come in, but they, at least, are best positioned to give you that advice - unlike anyone here.....

The OP should take a tent, flask, some comfy chairs and a picnic and sit for the next week. Just incase.

Has anyone replied ‘A&E now!’ yet?

Totally agree. I didn’t grow up in a Ukrainian household, but as a child I hated stuff like chips and chicken nuggets - still not a fan and will only have them in small doses. I much preferred healthy “adult” foods and my parents always ordered me an adult meal if we went out because kids menus were (and still are) utterly crap.

My 4 year old niece takes after me in that regard and she loves her food, but much prefers fruit, veggies, and strong flavoured foods like smoked fish, olives, and blue cheese.

She would choose that over chicken nuggets or sweets, so it’s really sad that people automatically expect children to just love and want that stuff when they might actually enjoy a more varied diet. I know toddlers that love sushi - it’s hardly an out there food these days.

stealth boast

A stealth boast about what? Supermarket sushi? 😂

nomas · 24/02/2026 20:44

TomatoSandwiches · 24/02/2026 16:36

There's a bacteria that grows on rice that can be fatal, if she has got food poisoning I woukd take her there and the container if they still have it to check if what kind of food poisoning it is.

There is no food poisoning.

You don’t go to A&E after eating a bit of old rice.

rwalker · 24/02/2026 20:45

Wouldn’t the sensible thing to do it just wait and see if they get I’ll if the do then at least you’ll know what caused it

hysterical drama and 111 aren’t going to do anything to help the moment

And to be clear - in this scenario, as the mother of this toddler, you’d shrug your shoulders and tell your husband it’s his problem to deal with.

Bloody. Hell @placemats

No that the toddler eats sushi and kefir and sauerkraut (whatever the fuck that is)
