Husband and toddler have eaten out of date sushi

Just in a bit of a panic as DH has just called me to say that he has accidentally eaten and given our toddler out of date sushie ( tesco meal deal pack). Use by was the 17/2 !
He said there was no obvious mold or bad taste.
I'm not normally a panicky person but this is so high risk with rice! It's been in his car for the weekend so not like its been in the fridge.
He bought some fresh today but didn't realise there was an old packet from last week!
Is there any I can do. Should I call nhs 111?

Oh lord. I’d call 111 and maybe fish any packets out of the bin for testing if need be.

Twonewcats · 24/02/2026 15:53

Yeah, I'd definitely phone pharmacy or 111, to ask for advice at least.
And why is DH not phoning them, rather than passing it to you?

ChocHotolate · 24/02/2026 15:53

What would 111 do if they have no symptoms?
Fingers crossed, guess all you can do is watch and wait now

I wouldn't worry until they felt unwell, if they get unwell at all.
What do people expect 111 to do? They're hardly going to rush you in for a stomach pump

Sailawaygirl · 24/02/2026 15:54

We are on the phone to each other panicking. He's driving home.

saveforthat · 24/02/2026 15:54

What? Who leaves sushi (of all things in the car)!

saveforthat · 24/02/2026 15:55

Is it fish or all veggie?

cardibach · 24/02/2026 15:56

In or out of date if it’s been in his car instead of a fridge it’s bloody silly for anyone to eat it!

Sailawaygirl · 24/02/2026 15:56

They are downing kefir and juice from sauerkraut for the good gut bacteria. Worth a shot.

Gosh that's not good, out of date and in his car boot for the weekend. Sorry I would definitely be ringing (not in UK) which ever is the number you ring or straight to a doctor. Sushi can make you very unwell if not stored, transported properly, even restaurants have a short time limit on how long to display it.

Thats insane. Pouring dairy and fermented liquids into a stomach that may well start vomiting sounds like a Jackass prank.

Furlane · 24/02/2026 15:59

was It raw fish? Probably just smoked salmon which will probably be fine.

Your toddler eats sushi, kefir and sauerkraut? Cool.

goz · 24/02/2026 16:01

I mean out of date or not who eats something fresh that’s been left in the car for days anyway!? If your DH gets sick it’s the moron penalty. Hopefully your toddler won’t but calling 111 is pointless.

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 24/02/2026 16:01

Why the hell didn't he just throw it in the bin after finding it in his car. He sounds dangerous.

Shinyhappyapple · 24/02/2026 16:03

Its worth phoning 111 for advice, however, when my DS are raw chicken (long story) and I was panicking, the advice we were given was simply to monitor and act only if he became unwell. He was fine. However he was 15 which is different from a toddler so you may be given different advice.

I think they are better just to drink water.

Pro botics are used to treat lots of gut infections.
If they are going to be violently sick it won't make much difference!

I also don't know what nhs 111 would do if they are not actually sick !
I guess it's a waiting game

OP posts:
PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 24/02/2026 16:07

They're just going to have to sit and wait aren't they? Don't bother 111 unless, well, there's a medical event that you can't manage without guidance.

Furlane · 24/02/2026 15:59

I don't think this is correct advice, 7 days out of date and stored in a car boot.

Sailawaygirl · 24/02/2026 16:08

So he didn't know he had out of date food in his car , he would normally throw it in the bin if he didn't eat it. He bought some new today then randomly found the old one and ate that. Then found the other one and checked the date and went oh shit

OP posts:
Melsy88 · 24/02/2026 16:08

I think you need to find out if it really was raw fish (unlikely if it was a tesco meal deal)
The rice was in a cool car (assuming you're in the uk) and i've also heard that the acid in sushi rice helps kill bacteria, so i don't think its a huge risk

Pinkgin00 · 24/02/2026 16:09

I am assuming he ate/gave the toddler what he thought was the fresh one he bought today, then realised his mistake after.

I would be worried too , if it's fish based you have 2 high risks food with the fish and the rice, not stored properly and 7 days out of date....

I guess it's an anxious waiting game, maybe top up of hydration sachets like diorylate. How long ago was it consumed?

Sailawaygirl · 24/02/2026 16:11

@Pinkgin00 yes that exactly
Toddler had the rice one only
Dh had the fish one

Why is everyone saying to call 111? What do they think they're going to be able to do? 😂
