Husband and toddler have eaten out of date sushi

Just in a bit of a panic as DH has just called me to say that he has accidentally eaten and given our toddler out of date sushie ( tesco meal deal pack). Use by was the 17/2 !
He said there was no obvious mold or bad taste.
I'm not normally a panicky person but this is so high risk with rice! It's been in his car for the weekend so not like its been in the fridge.
He bought some fresh today but didn't realise there was an old packet from last week!
Is there any I can do. Should I call nhs 111?

Drinking kefir and sauerkraut juice together is enough to make anyone vomit.

It's done now, you'll just have to wait and see.

summitfever · 24/02/2026 16:14

its better in the boot than in the house as it’s Feb and cold so will have been stored at fridge temp for a good chunk of the time, if not all of it depending where you are. Can only wait to see if they get sick, I’m betting they’ll be fine.

Well he's a pillock isn't he

Depends where they are in the UK..it hasn't been that cold where I am, 13/14 degrees today

liveforsummer · 24/02/2026 16:19

I’d had avoided the weird kefir/sauerkraut combo. Now you won’t know if they are being sick from the sushi or from that curdling in their bellies 😬. Only thing you can do is wait I guess. It’s been cold and the car boot never gets that warm anyway. If it smelled ok, taste and texture was ok then hopefully they’ll be fine

was It raw fish? Probably just smoked salmon which will probably be fine.

‘Probably be fine’…. It’s a week out of date and been sat in his car all weekend!

They are downing kefir and juice from sauerkraut for the good gut bacteria. Worth a shot.

That's ridiculous - good gut bacteria can't 'kill' food poisoning!

Although it might make them sick, which would be a good thing

Thats insane. Pouring dairy and fermented liquids into a stomach that may well start vomiting sounds like a Jackass prank.

😂

TomatoSandwiches · 24/02/2026 16:28

It's gonna be puke - o - rama at your house tonight op, the rice can actually be more dangerous than the fish so as soon as your little one vomits I'd be taking her to hospital.

PinkDaffodil2 · 24/02/2026 16:29

I don’t understand why the suggestions to call 111? Do people call 111 every time they have food poisoning? There’s guys don’t even know if they have it or not yet.
You’ll know soon enough if they have food poisoning and obviously keep an eye that the little one stays hydrated if this happens - but please leave 111 be for now!

Itsmetheflamingo · 24/02/2026 16:31

Tesco sushi isn’t raw fish. Yes the rice could’ve gone bad but as others have said you’ll just have to wait and see. Downing sauerkraut and kefir is wild though

monicagellerbing · 24/02/2026 16:31

Why is your DH such an idiot. Out of date is bad enough but then it’s been in his car all weekend. If toddler became really poorly I’d never forgive this, absolutely moronic behaviour

PinkDaffodil2 · 24/02/2026 16:31

@TomatoSandwiches genuine question why would you take a vomiting toddler to A&E? Especially when you know it’s due to food poisoning. Is this a parenting expectation I have missed.

Giraffemug30 · 24/02/2026 16:32

What are 111 going to do?

It's a waiting game at this point. It's not going to be raw salmon in a tesco meal deal and that would be reeking 7 days out of date. Hopefully the boot has kept it reasonably cold

Lay plenty of towels down and strategic bowls everywhere and you'll just have pray

It's the usual "You can't be too careful" mantra without any thought as to what could actually be done now.
Quick trip back in the Tardis to not eat it?

cestlavielife · 24/02/2026 16:35

Nothing to do til /unless they get sick

There's a bacteria that grows on rice that can be fatal, if she has got food poisoning I woukd take her there and the container if they still have it to check if what kind of food poisoning it is.

HangingOutAtTheRialto · 24/02/2026 16:38

There's no point in doing anything until anyone has symptoms.

Make a note of who ate what and when and monitor them for symptoms. Contact for medical advice if DH or your baby develop any.

Diarrhoea
Vomiting
Stomach cramps
Fever
Sweaty

Get some rehydration sachets / tablets in, just in case.

Toddlers can go downhill pretty quickly, vomiting and diarrhea can cause dehydration a saline IV for that and antibiotics IV would be given for the bacterial infection

saveforthat · 24/02/2026 15:54

What? Who leaves sushi (of all things in the car)!

More to the point who would think it is ok to eat ? Only a bloody idiot

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 24/02/2026 16:41

you’ll know soon enough if either is sick. 🤢

Blinkingbother · 24/02/2026 16:41

I am not a doctor but my advice as a parent is wait to call 111 until there are actual symptoms of food poisoning (but should either get diarrhoea or vomiting call straight away & explain). On a positive note it’s not summer - when the car has been unoccupied it’s likely to have been cool in there…. Hopefully, they’ll come out unscathed!!

It’s rice. Technically yes it could cause food poisoning but it might just cause a stomach ache.

The fish is what I’d be worried about, raw too.

Parsleyforme · 24/02/2026 16:42

I don’t think 111 will be able to help as they won’t know whether they actually have food poisoning or not. They will probably tell you to watch and wait to see if symptoms emerge. I would expect that they do have FP in terms of putting toddler in old clothes, keeping a bowl ready etc. but I would hope that they don’t and try not to panic. It’s not really helpful or fair for PPs to say it can be fatal when they haven’t even been sick yet
