Husband and toddler have eaten out of date sushi

Just in a bit of a panic as DH has just called me to say that he has accidentally eaten and given our toddler out of date sushie ( tesco meal deal pack). Use by was the 17/2 !
He said there was no obvious mold or bad taste.
I'm not normally a panicky person but this is so high risk with rice! It's been in his car for the weekend so not like its been in the fridge.
He bought some fresh today but didn't realise there was an old packet from last week!
Is there any I can do. Should I call nhs 111?

You don’t know what sauerkraut is? Why do you think that’s some kind of flex? It’s a perfectly normal food and very good for you.

As mentioned, there’s nothing unusual about children liking perfectly normal foods. It’s pretty sad that in this country people are conditioning their kids to only eat shit like chicken nuggets and chips and telling them that’s what they like without even giving them a chance to develop their own tastes.

What’s even more sad is people like you who seem to think that people who have kids that enjoy these perfectly normal foods must be boasting 🙄.

No wonder there’s a fucking obesity crisis.

This is the most mumsnet reply of all time. British kids are heathens CHECK
Chicken nugggets and chips CHECK
Ending it with “no wonder there’s a fucking obesity crisis” is just <chefs kiss>

Caitl995 · 24/02/2026 22:25

My god they’re morons. No one will ever convince me otherwise, totally useless. I hope the child is okay and I hope the husband can’t sleep.

goz · 24/02/2026 16:42

I can’t believe there are so many people who would call 111 because they ate something out of date but feel fine.

Honestly. Wow. The world has gone mad!!! No wonder our NHS services are so over run!! I fully expect both child and husband to be absolutely fine.

I would phone "nurse on call".

They might ask you to go to nearest A&E and be administered with activated charcoal, or might think waiting and observing is sufficient.
Keep a record of the actual ingredients.

Are you in the UK? We don't have a "Nurse on Call". Any medical service will not direct you to A&E in these circumstances, and I would suggest that the charcoal wouldn't be given.

Or the GP, go to A&E, or "the Nurse on Call"?

aurynne · 24/02/2026 22:27

For the love of God, toddlers eat dog poo.

Yes, bad rice and fish "can" kill, but how often does that happen? Have you all lost your bloody mind? What on earth do you think a doctor or A&E will do if you bring in 2 people who "may or may not" develop food poisoning? Do you think they will suddenly put on their lab coats, take samples of the food and magic up a machine to tell them the bacteria they contain?

I'll tell you exactly what they'll do: send you home, ask you to call or come back if you develop severe symptoms, and laugh their heads off behind your back at how ridiculous and needy humans have become in the supposedly Western world.

HTH

No they wouldn’t.

Thank you. Some common sense on here.

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 24/02/2026 22:39

Rice food poisoning probably would be pretty disgusting and dodgy, but more likely to be more serious for a toddler.

For the silly DH, guess he might just be crapping through the eye of a needle most of the night.

Get back to Tesco for more loo roll, methinks 😂🫣

ChaliceinWonderland · 24/02/2026 22:42

Is he normally this neglectful?

Jesus Christ it was a joke 🤦🏻‍♀️

If toddler ate this around 3.30 ish and was still fine by the time OP last posted (18.17) then my guess is she's going to stay fine. If the rice was problematic, symptoms would start showing themselves pretty quickly.

Even food poisoning would usually just mean sickness. I can’t see a GP would prescribe anything bar dehydration sachets which you can get otc.

I had someone berate me earlier for not realising how dangerous cooked rice and pasta was. For me uncooked or cooked meat and eggs are worse.

Zippidydoodah · 24/02/2026 22:56

Naaah (as my teen would say).

I hope they’re ok.

FrozenFebruary · 24/02/2026 23:05

Comprehension levels on MN are getting worse & worse 🙇🏻‍♀️

flosspot4 · 24/02/2026 23:05

Absolute insanity to suggest going to hospital before symptoms have even presented! They might dodge it, it’s not a given that they will get sick. If they do then that’s the time to start thinking about medical advice.

DeftWasp · 24/02/2026 23:06

Sailawaygirl · 24/02/2026 16:05

Pro botics are used to treat lots of gut infections.
If they are going to be violently sick it won't make much difference!

I also don't know what nhs 111 would do if they are not actually sick !
I guess it's a waiting game

Even if they are actually sick its not a crisis, only if it carries on - being sick / having diarrhoea is the bodies way of expelling that which is no good.

Eat as normal, stay hydrated and see what happens.

ChaliceinWonderland · 24/02/2026 22:42

Ffs it was an accident. Op has repeatedly said he mixed up the new sushi with the old one. Not ideal but easily done. Certainly not neglectful. Jeez is everyone on MN on crack tonight?

I know. Unbelievable.
I was hospitalised and on an IV drip for 10 days when I had campylobater. I was in a separate room and people had to put a gown on to come in the room.
On discharge I was given very clear advice about hygiene.

DS1 had campylobacter when he was 3 or 4. It was likely caught from a child at nursery not washing their hands & sharing food at snack time. No one else at home had it and he hadn't been anywhere else. It was horrible.

Poor little thing. It was bad enough as an adult.

And say what.... they aren't going to do a stomach pump on a toddler....
If they get sick I will be straight on phone to 111 but I agree there's nothing anyone can do yet.
Ironically I'm feeling sick but I've not eaten anything bad!

You don't have to work out the treatment plan. Out of date rice - left in a car? to make matters worse - is really serious and could kill an adult, let alone a toddler.

Fluperson · 24/02/2026 23:37

Lots of people on here not understanding rice food poisoning. Bacillus cereus is riskier than most other food poisoning because the toxin it creates can not be destroyed and can be fatal. I do think it's worth learning about because some people are so blase about it. I think within 6 hours, if vomiting hasn't started, then they can breathe a little easier, as the diarrhoea type isn't as serious. Some other types of food poisoning can be treated if need be. I hope they're OK and they've passed at least 6 hours OP.

I don’t wish to be the bearer of bad news but I thought the same recently when by DC ate rice that had been left out in a warm climate. I thought that as he hadn’t shown signs of being ill 6 hours later that he had gotten away with it. 🙈 Unfortunately it kicked in about 20 hours later but his symptoms were fever, fatigue, stomach ache and loss of appetite and generally feeling like crap. He didn’t have vomiting or diarrhoea thankfully.
Hopefully they are ok OP.

custardcreamsrock · 24/02/2026 23:47

As someone who works at 111 I can confirm there is sweet fanny fuck all 111 can do, contrary to popular belief, we are unable to see into the future: if symptoms occur and you are worried, of course ring, that’s the whole point of the service however until that point, continue to monitor, fingers crossed, all involved parties will remain unscathed
