Husband and toddler have eaten out of date sushi

Just in a bit of a panic as DH has just called me to say that he has accidentally eaten and given our toddler out of date sushie ( tesco meal deal pack). Use by was the 17/2 !
He said there was no obvious mold or bad taste.
I'm not normally a panicky person but this is so high risk with rice! It's been in his car for the weekend so not like its been in the fridge.
He bought some fresh today but didn't realise there was an old packet from last week!
Is there any I can do. Should I call nhs 111?

See upthread

Yeah I saw it. Still makes zero sense

Food poisoning is contagious, risking infecting people at a funeral, many of which will be old and vulnerable, and the many people you would have encountered at multiple service stations is insanely selfish.

I know. Unbelievable.
I was hospitalised and on an IV drip for 10 days when I had campylobater. I was in a separate room and people had to put a gown on to come in the room.
On discharge I was given very clear advice about hygiene.

It does sound odd, but he bought sushi yet somehow found the old sushi in the car, so they ate that. I don't know what happened to the fresh stuff. Maybe still in the boot.

It's up to him how he deals with it. He's the parent and you're not his mother.

WiddlinDiddlin · 24/02/2026 19:31

Wait and see - 111 and hospital are going to tell you to go away and come back if there are actually any symptoms. There may not be.

I have to ask, how did week old fish (raw or otherwise) not smell and taste off? Even if its barely gotten above fridge temperatures out in the car, a week old?! Ugh.

She's the mother of the toddler, though. If he goes down with the D&V as well as the little one, it'll be very much down to her.

Oh hush now.

I take it you’re not a parent

Fish reeks after a couple of days, doesn't it?

7 day old sushi festering in a car “mixed up” with an identical pack of just purchased fresh cold sushi.

Very odd. I suspect he’s telling the OP porkies

processedtoms · 24/02/2026 19:35

I bet they’ll be fine. Those meal deal sushi packs are so processed, they’d probably survive a nuclear bomb.

Why would he do that?

MagdaLenor · 24/02/2026 19:36

who knows

but I’d say more likely fibbing than he somehow mixed an identical pack of sushi festering in his car for a week that he mixed up with the refrigerated sushi he had literally just bought

Indianajet · 24/02/2026 19:38

I am struggling to understand how this happened. Did he take the old one into the house thinking it was the new one, then ate it despite it being warm? If so, where is the new pack now?

FaintingGoats · 24/02/2026 19:38

stealth boast

are you suggesting he poisoned his toddler?

pretty shit way of doing it, he’s confessed before anything even happened

FaintingGoats · 24/02/2026 19:39

Duuumb ways to diieeee….

Nah I bet they’ll be absolutely fine

LambriniBobInIsleworthISeesYa · 24/02/2026 19:40

Just here for the inevitable “it was fine” message.

damsela · 24/02/2026 19:42

How the heck did it not smell and taste like absolute shit?

It probably does even IN DATE though.

I suspect the car boot, festering away nicely

And the smell from taking off the plastic would have been horrific like a penguins breath regurgitating up mushy fish for its baby penguin.

Oh don’t be daft

No - of course not.

I reckon that he saw the sushi in the car and ate it / fed it to his son because it was easier than going to the shops / couldn’t be arsed to go to shops. Then saw the extent of hiw off date it was (although I can’t fathom how unrefrigerated 7 day old sushi even looked edible let alone tasted ok) and thought - shit

Not anymore.
The amount of chemicals added to food to prolong life and appearance now is ludicrous.
Particularly seafood.
Smell test isn't a thing these days.

If they haven't vomited it back pretty quickly then any damage is already done. Just prepare for the possible consequences, D&V, fever etc, then wait and hope. Good luck

Edited

7 day old unrefrigerated sandwich would have looked and smelt foul… let alone sushi!!

Starlight7080 · 24/02/2026 19:45

Fingers crossed nothing to bad happens. Sounds like a genuine mistake.
I would have dioralyte for kids in just incase and maybe some pepto bismol for your dh.
