Husband and toddler have eaten out of date sushi

Just in a bit of a panic as DH has just called me to say that he has accidentally eaten and given our toddler out of date sushie ( tesco meal deal pack). Use by was the 17/2 !
He said there was no obvious mold or bad taste.
I'm not normally a panicky person but this is so high risk with rice! It's been in his car for the weekend so not like its been in the fridge.
He bought some fresh today but didn't realise there was an old packet from last week!
Is there any I can do. Should I call nhs 111?

The fact that your DH thought it okay to eat, and feed, a pack of week old sushi, that hadn't even been refrigerated for at least a weekend, to a small child, tells me that he isn't safe to look after a goldfish, never mind a toddler. I hope neither of them fall ill, but by God, that's some serious carelessness.

GiganticWuss · 24/02/2026 18:08

Just an FYI that I had campylobacter food poisoning from chicken that wasn’t cooked well enough (in an Italian restaurant). It took 72 hours to hit. I ended up at the GP days later because I was still so sick and they tested me. They said they could offer antibiotics but I declined as I was getting better. Hold onto the container! Good luck!

So if the date on it is the 17th February, that would have been last Tuesday, but you say it was left in the car over the weekend. Had it been stored in the fridge until then? When did he actually buy it?

Actually good point, so he took out of date sushi from the fridge at home and put in the car at the weekend and forgot about it until today.or he bought out of date sushi the weekend.

Our local Tesco Extra does.

Looks like Asda too (according to Google).

I’ve eaten out of date salmon before and been fine. It’s the rice that is the main concern. I have eaten it a couple of days out of date and been ok . If it tasted ok I wouldn’t worry. But Susci isn’t ideal to give a toddler really because of salt content.

Sailawaygirl · 24/02/2026 18:14

We have been away on holiday so he hasn't been in his car for a week.
He bought fresh in date sushi today to eat however he had left a packet of old sushi in his car accidentally. And found and opened this one before he Then saw the new packet and thought oh no. He didn't look at the date and say oh the 17th will be ok!
The sushi was bought as his lunch for today as he prefers it to sandwiches and so does toddler.

Hospital like now. As someone who has worked in the food industry id get down there now. Just explain what's happened.

What do you imagine the hospital will do?

whatisheupto · 24/02/2026 18:16

How many pieces did your toddler eat OP? If it was only one small piece that will lessen the risk....

I'd be having very stern words with DH. It's too careless. Who the hell leaves sushi in the car for a week?! And even if you did, surely when you picked it up you'd be very careful to put it straight in the bin? ESPECIALLY if you've literally just bought an identical pack?

Honestly, I'd be furious. Is this behaviour normal for him?

A hospital can't do anything for someone who may potentially have food poisoning 🙄

And say what.... they aren't going to do a stomach pump on a toddler....
If they get sick I will be straight on phone to 111 but I agree there's nothing anyone can do yet.
Ironically I'm feeling sick but I've not eaten anything bad!

If that's how you feel after reading this thread, I strongly advise that you do NOT read the scabies one currently trending...

I had a date with a man 2 years ago, a few months later we were chatting about how he enjoyed download festival. He then informed me he caught scabies there. 😂😂 Didn't realise it was so common!

It'll be the anxiety, I'd feel the exact same!! Hope they're okay 🙏🏻🖤

When feeding chilled food, particularly something like rice, that carries a risk of food poisoning if out of date or improperly stored, to a small child, the date on the package should be carefully checked. It's basic food safety.

So it's actually been in the car for a week not a weekend 🤢🤮

This sounds like something my husband would do. He once fed me a chicken salad with raw chicken juices mixed into the dressing when I was heavily pregnant. I explicitly told him to keep the chidlen and juices and seperate from the salad... he used the marinate from the raw chicken as the dressing. I was fine but I once ate a gone off sausage and I got really bad food posining, but the sausage tasted bad and smelled like death so if it didnt smell it wil probably be fine.

Sorry to derail but why did you eat a sausage that tasted like it had gone off?

I once accidentally ate an omelette made six month old eggs and was fine, a few years later though I felt like I was at death’s door for a whole week after eating fresh eggs. You just never know.

UnctuousUnicorns · 24/02/2026 18:23

I mean I'm not having a go at you, OP, but your DH really does need his arse kicking for this. Hopefully you won't have to wait for him to get off the lav first.

Houndsahollering · 24/02/2026 18:24

Calm down the pair of you!!!
there is literally nothing you can do except wait and see if they get poorly.

My local Sainsbury's - they have a separate counter. Also marks and Spencers and Waitrose.

Out of interest I’ve looked online at this.

Do you mean the “Japanese” concessions /brands they have in Sainsbury etc? Tbf the OP says it’s a Tesco meal deal.

However it looks like raw fish has to be labelled as such - and looking at m&s, Waitrose and Sainsbury they only have 1,2,3 items in each Brand that contain raw fish.

Get a grip. People are waiting hours and hours to see a staff member when they’re actually ill. No one needs be sitting in A&E just in case they become unwell fgs

BillieWiper · 24/02/2026 18:31

Yeah you don't call any non emergency or medical lines if you have no symptoms after eating out of date food. They can't do or say anything other than if you get sick then call back.

I hope they're alright. Tesco sushi doesn't contain raw fish. I know rice can be bad but please try not to worry.

HumberBridge2 · 24/02/2026 18:31

Don't take their vomit in a tub to A&E, that's grim. If they're that ill they need A&E I'm sure they'll be able to get another sample !!

Watch and wait OP, hope they're both OK

Yes I said I have no idea if Tesco do. My reply was to someone saying supermarket sushi doesn't have raw fish and I was saying some of them do. I know that Waitrose, M&S and Sainsbury's do because I've had it from all those places.

@foreversunshine 🤣 to be honest, I found that one of the more believable parts of the story. My now 5yo still eats anything and everything (apart from leafy lettuce - ‘crunchy only please mum’ 😂) and has done since weaning. I appreciate that’s a relatively rare thing though 😂 He’s been known to eat herbs and spices from the jar while I’m trying to cook. I could put the most hideous looking concoction infront of him and he’d be saying “this doesn’t look that nice mum” as he was raising the fork to his mouth for a taste without being asked to 🤣🫠

I find it more weird that someone keeps week old sushi in the car and doesn’t notice 😅
And that anyone things “oh shit, I’ve eaten out of date fish/rice…better get the kefir and sauerkraut out” 🤔😂 I’d be getting my blanket and moving to the bathroom floor to await my fate 😅

Imagine finding week old sushi in your car and then safely tucking this back in the fridge to enjoy at a later date. Or your car being such a tip you grab the wrong packet.. Natural selection at its finest. 😂😂

Surely no one can be that daft to then feed this to their child. I don’t believe a thing on this post.
