Husband and toddler have eaten out of date sushi

Just in a bit of a panic as DH has just called me to say that he has accidentally eaten and given our toddler out of date sushie ( tesco meal deal pack). Use by was the 17/2 !
He said there was no obvious mold or bad taste.
I'm not normally a panicky person but this is so high risk with rice! It's been in his car for the weekend so not like its been in the fridge.
He bought some fresh today but didn't realise there was an old packet from last week!
Is there any I can do. Should I call nhs 111?

Don’t panic. How long ago did he consume? If there was going to be an issue e.g. food poisoning you’d know very quickly as soon as within the hour.

don’t be ringing 111 unnecessarily if either are showing symptoms of anything

The fish is what I’d be worried about, raw too.

It’s not raw fish!! Supermarkets don’t sell raw fish in their sushi

Emmz1510 · 24/02/2026 17:19

If it didn’t taste off or weird in anyway then they might get lucky and be fine. It was in the car which was probably quite cold this time of year.

If they start vomiting take them to a&e. Its the rice thats dangerous. I had food poisoning off cod once, ended up being hospitalised couldn’t keep anything down for 8 days!

Jessbow · 24/02/2026 17:26

Leaving cooked rice at room temperature for more than 1–2 hours allows Bacillus cereus bacteria spores to germinate and multiply, producing heat-resistant toxins that cause food poisoning (often called "fried rice syndrome"). Reheating cannot kill these toxins, which lead to vomiting or diarrhea.
Right as Rain by UW Medicine +4
Key Safety Information:

  • The Danger: Bacillus cereus is common in raw rice and survives cooking.
  • Time Limit: Never leave cooked rice out for more than 2 hours (1 hour if the temperature is above 90°F).
  • Proper Cooling: To avoid rapid bacteria growth, cool rice quickly—divide into small portions or spread on a tray—and refrigerate within 1 hour
  • .
  • Reheating: Reheat rice until it is steaming hot throughout.
  • Storage: Use refrigerated leftover rice within 24 hours.
  • Outbreak News Today +7
Symptoms of this food poisoning include vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea, typically appearing within 1–6 hours of consumption

They are downing kefir and juice from sauerkraut for the good gut bacteria. Worth a shot.

Boak 🤢

If they weren't going to vom before they will with that mixture!

If it smelt and tasted fine it was likely fine.

stichguru · 24/02/2026 17:27

Oh dear
There's no point doing anything unless they show symptoms as there is no treatment for "might possibly be going to get food poisoning"! Just make sure you have bowls and towels and spare bedding handy tonight!

If either of them are poorly, and are struggling to keep down fluids then A&E might be needed for rehydration, particularly for the baby. Get is some rehydration salts too.

AliceAbsolum · 24/02/2026 17:28

Let us know how they get on op

Ridiculous advice, there is no need to go to A&E for food poisoning if your only symptom is vomiting for a short period of time.

foreversunshine · 24/02/2026 15:59

Your toddler eats sushi, kefir and sauerkraut? Cool.

@foreversunshine 🤣 to be honest, I found that one of the more believable parts of the story. My now 5yo still eats anything and everything (apart from leafy lettuce - ‘crunchy only please mum’ 😂) and has done since weaning. I appreciate that’s a relatively rare thing though 😂 He’s been known to eat herbs and spices from the jar while I’m trying to cook. I could put the most hideous looking concoction infront of him and he’d be saying “this doesn’t look that nice mum” as he was raising the fork to his mouth for a taste without being asked to 🤣🫠

I find it more weird that someone keeps week old sushi in the car and doesn’t notice 😅
And that anyone things “oh shit, I’ve eaten out of date fish/rice…better get the kefir and sauerkraut out” 🤔😂 I’d be getting my blanket and moving to the bathroom floor to await my fate 😅

You don’t need to go to A&E for food poisoning as a rule. When I had food poisoning from rice I stayed at home while it took its course, and was fine.

DS2 is an ANP in A&E. Every patient he saw last Wednesday was seen on the back of ambulance. They are literally bursting at the seams.

Sadly this simply isn't true. Food poisoning can take up to 72 hours to show.

CelestialCandyfloss · 24/02/2026 17:33

I think all you can do is wait and see. I ate some in -date, non smelly sushi (Yo Sushi takeaway) and was sick as a dog, and I've also accidentally eaten out of date sushi and was fine.

TerrysCIockworkOrange · 24/02/2026 17:34

I got the worst food poisoning of my life from dodgy sushi, and that was bought fresh the day I ate it! If it helps, it was maybe 4 hours from eating it to (figuratively speaking) fighting for my life in the bathroom. Good luck to them

Why the hell didn't he just throw it in the bin after finding it in his car. He sounds dangerous.

Which supermarkets sell raw fish sushi?

My local Sainsbury's - they have a separate counter. Also marks and Spencers and Waitrose.

socks1107 · 24/02/2026 17:52

It’ll be a case of wait and cross your fingers. Out of date and not refrigerated is not good but it’s eaten now. I wouldn’t be pouring anymore good bacteria in there, light plain tea and water.
took 3 day to my symptoms to start after eating one mouthful of uncooked chicken in a restaurant so it may not be instant

Sadly this simply isn't true. Food poisoning can take up to 72 hours to show.

It depends which bacteria caused the food poisoning. Bacillus cereus from rice is "fast acting", usually within 6 hours for vomiting. Salmonella can take days become symptomatic.

Sailawaygirl · 24/02/2026 16:48

It's the rice I'm worries about. I'm sure the fish is full of preservatives.
So far they are happy running outside!

Bowls, spare bedding, towels and water on stand by.

as someone who got viciously sick from out of date fish when I was 15 (frozen, spoiled fish that tasted normal)... yeah, no. I spent a month very very unwell. got taken to hospital. I can't remember two weeks - I was delirious and so unwell that my mother slept at the foot of my bed. My fever was constantly up and down. couldn't keep anything in me. I was crying in agony, and I think getting it again would send me into a mental facility. I had fear surrounding eating for years after and still can't eat fish really. I lost 15% of my total bodyweight (after, this turned into anorexia which is neither here nor there).

rice is really dangerous but fish food poisoning can be just as bad. mine led to worsening stomach ulcers and issues with my digestion that lasted nearly a decade.

ThatLilacTiger · 24/02/2026 18:00

Jesus Christ, well might he panic. That's dangerously negligent. I'm not so much judging leaving sushi in the car because my car is full of shit too. But I make a point not to feed it to my infant children.

Rice left at room temperature can kill. I'd call 111 for advice in case they recommend something more than watching and waiting. And I'd get your story in order because telling the hospital you fed your toddler out of date sushi you left in the car for over a week is not going to go down well.

Our local Tesco Extra does.

WhatYouWearing · 24/02/2026 18:03

You can only assume it wasn’t so rank it put them off eating it. With the rest you’ll have to cross your fingers (and I include living with you DH in that)
